Black Masculinity in the 21st Century
North Carolina Central University’s Departments of Language and Literature and Mass Communication will host the eighth African American Literature/Studies Symposium on Thursday, November 12, 2015. This year’s theme is “Black Masculinity in the 21st Century”. This symposium will explore contemporary approaches to the study of Black Masculinity in African American Studies.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, Professor of African & African-American Studies and Director of the Center for Arts, Digital Culture & Entrepreneurship at Duke University.
Possible paper topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
Afrofuturism, Authenticity, Childhood, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Folklore, Disability Studies, Diaspora Studies, Drama, Hip Hop Studies, Intertextuality, Film/Television Studies, Literary Canon, Memory, Protest, Pop Culture, and Urban Literature
Graduate and creative submissions are welcomed.

Call for Participation - IARSLCE Research Fellowship
Project on Community Engagement Professionals
Campus Compact is launching a project to develop a better understanding of the competencies and professional development practices of community engagement professionals. The research aspects of this project, including review of literature and data collection, will be completed by a corps of Research Fellows in the summer and early fall of 2015. Research Fellows’ work will be coordinated by Lina Dostilio, director of the Center for Community-Engaged Teaching and Research at Duquesne University and is a program of the Graduate Student Network of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE). You need not be a graduate student to participate: the opportunity is an inclusive invitation to those who are interested.

CFP: Narrative and Hypertext 2015

Narrative and Hypertext 2015 workshop on narrative systems
To be held in conjunction with Hypertext 2015, Cyprus
This workshop aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum to bring together individuals from the humanities and technological communities to share work and discuss state-of-the-art research on narrative from both a technical and aesthetic perspective. It follows on from the very successful narrative workshops at HT2011 (the largest workshop in the conference), HT2012 which kick-started a number of collaborations and subsequent meetings, and at HT2013 where several of these collaborations were consolidated into future research projects.
This year's workshop will principally build upon these previous successes, and aims to continue to consolidate this community by providing an open interdisciplinary forum of discussion on key issues facing the field.
Narrative is a prevalent form of information common in our entertainment and communications, and key to our understanding of the world and its events. By building better models of narrative along with methods for generation, adaption, and presentation we enable narrative systems to become more effective but also improve our understanding of narrative structures.
There is a growing community of researchers working on narrative systems, hypertext narratives, and machine readable narrative models, for which this workshop seeks to act as a hub to review advances and to discuss what the field might achieve in the coming year.
The hypertext conference has a history of publishing work related to narrative research ranging from explorations of criticism and the creation of digital narrative to authoring hypertext fiction and semantic narrative systems. This workshop aims to support this work by providing an open interdisciplinary forum of discussion on key issues facing the field.
The event is a full day workshop with planned sessions based around presentations of short paper submissions from attendees. As well as the planned sessions we plan to have some serendipitous sessions allowing for free discussion on topics of interest to those attending much like what is seen in 'unconference' events. Topics of interest for these sessions will be polled from the participants during coffee breaks at the beginning of the day and over lunch to allowing for serendipitous sessions late morning and at the end of the day. As well as free discussion these serendipitous sessions might include small relevant presentations and technical demos. This structure is based on the highly successful structure of previous workshops. Areas of discussion and relevant topics for the workshop include:

Participants
Researchers and practitioners working with hypertext or narrative are invited to attend this workshop. Participants are asked to submit a short (between 2 and 5 pages ACM format) position paper on their current work. Authors of papers selected for presentation will be informed 4 weeks after the submission deadline. All the position papers of participants will be made available on the workshop website.
Activities
As with last year the workshop will be split into planned and serendipitous sessions. The planned sessions will comprise of presentations of work from those with selected submitted papers with time for questions and discussion after each.
The serendipitous sessions will depend on the interests of the attendees of the workshop and will function in the style of an unconference. The preceding coffee break to each serendipitous session will allow participants to put forward suggestions for discussion topics, short presentations, or demos. The organizers will then select the most popular activities suggested as the focus for that session.
Submission Details
Papers should be in ACM format, be between 2 and 5 pages long and submitted as a PDF. The papers should be emailed no later than
midnight GMT 12th June 2015 to Charlie Hargood at cah07r@ecs.soton.ac.uk. Submitted papers will be refereed and notification of acceptance sent out 4 weeks later. Accepted papers will be included alongside the ACM Hypertext conference proceedings in the ACM Digital Library, and author will have a week to prepare camera ready papers for submission after acceptance.

CFP: 7th Annual ACMHE Conference: Building Just Communities

The 7th Annual Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education Conference will explore contemplative approaches to creating and sustaining just communities: approaches that foster connection while recognizing and honoring difference, with a commitment to the common flourishing of all. These approaches should examine the profound ways in which our social locations within higher education–based on age, gender, sexual orientation, discipline, ability, religion, race, social/economic class, nationality, contemplative tradition–affect and are affected by differing levels of advantage or disadvantage. As we recognize our interdependence and our responsibilities to one another, we can cultivate more ethical, compassionate, and more socially just communities.
We often see contemplative approaches as practices focused inward, as forms of self-inquiry and reflection for fostering intrapersonal development. However, we also know that they arise out of and influence broader human relations, developing and sustaining greater interpersonal connection. What is this connection? How can interpersonal connection be nurtured, especially in the service of social justice and the creation of “beloved communities” like those envisioned by Josiah Royce and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.?
Presentation proposals might address questions such as:
- How can we use contemplative approaches to create beloved community in our institutions of higher education?
- What have social movements (past and present) taught us about building just communities and the use of contemplative practices in creating a just world?
- How can contemplative practices help us honor differences between us, recognizing the sociopolitical dynamics that so often accompany those differences?
- What is the responsibility of contemplative pedagogy with regard to social justice initiatives/movements?
- How can contemplative communities do the work of unsettling oppression, both within the communities and outside of them? How can we be guided by the work of contemplative and spiritually-based communities throughout history?
- How can we inspire students to engage in just community building through contemplative pedagogy?
- How can these initiatives more effectively engage marginalized students?

2015 Doctoral Dissertation Grants competition - TIRF
Deadline is approaching!
The deadline for TIRF’s 2015 Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDG) competition is quickly approaching, with an application deadline set for April 22, 2015. The DDG funding is intended to support worthy applicants who have advanced to candidacy (that is, they are in the dissertation phase in their doctoral programs) and whose dissertation research plans address topics that TIRF has prioritized. Grants of up to US $5,000 will be made to successful applicants investigating any of the following topics:
- Bilingualism or Plurilingualism in Business, Industry, and the Professions
- Language Assessment
- Optimal Uses of Technology in the Delivery of English Language Instruction
- Language Teacher Education
- Students’ Age and Effective English Language Education in Schools
- Language Policy and Planning
TIRF is offering two types of DDGs. The first is the Foundation’s long-standing TIRF DDG that is supported by Cam-bridge English Language Assessment and many of our individual donors. The other type of grant offered by TIRF is the TIRF-British Council DDG, which is designed to support doctoral candidates from under-resourced parts of the world and/or doctoral candidates doing research which is likely to lead to the improvement of language education in developing nations. Call For Sessions: Association of Critical Heritage Studies
What does heritage change? / Le patrimoine, ça change quoi?
First Call for Sessions and Panels for the 3rd Biannual Conference: Montreal, 7-10th June 2016
Heritage is a powerful witness to mindsets and zeitgeist; it is commonly understood that it gives way to a better understanding of societies and even brings together communities. But how would this happen? Can heritage affect reality? What does it change?
The third ACHS Conference considers the manifestations, discourses, epistemologies, policies, and stakes of heritage—as a phenomenon, a symptom, an effect or a catalyst; as a tool of empowerment or leverage; as a physical or intangible restraint or kick-off; in communities, societies, or any material or mental environment. Subthemes range from gender-related issues to identity-making, mythologies of cultural diversity and the rethinking of heritage policies beyond the authorized heritage discourse.
The inaugural manifesto of the ACHS called for the building and the promotion of critical innovations and interventions in heritage while questioning the cultural and economic power relations that traditional understandings of heritage seem to underpin. This third Conference builds on the momentum of the previous conferences, held in Gothenburg, Sweden and in Canberra, Australia; it seeks to strengthen and broaden critical heritage studies as an inclusive area of theorisation, investigation and practice built from diverse geographical regions and disciplinary fields, such as public history, memory studies, museology, tourism studies, architecture and planning, urban studies, archaeology, geography, sociology, cultural studies, political science, anthropology, ethnology and artistic research.
Submissions to the 2016 ACHS Conference should bring innovative reflections and interdisciplinary methodologies or approaches to the critical enquiries about how and why heritage is, has been or could be made, used, studied, defined and managed, and with what effects, if any, on a society, a territory, an economy. Contributions might, for example, explore the reconstruction of narratives, the reconfiguration of social relations, knowledge production and cultural expressions, the transformation of the environment or the (de)valuation of the land. We particularly welcome papers that go beyond canon theories to interrogate discipline-based norms about heritage, and the assumptions that orient practice or decision-making. In this respect, this conference aims to continue important debates about heritage as a domain of politics and citizenship, a living environment, a source of identity and an assemblage of human-non-human relations.

CFP: Language and Social Interaction Working Group (LANSI)

LANSI brings together scholars and students working on naturally-occurring data within the broad area of language and social interaction. In keeping with the LANSI spirit of diversity and dialog, we welcome abstracts from colleagues working on a variety of topics using discourse analytic approaches that include but are not limited to conversation analysis, interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, and critical discourse analysis. Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words and should include descriptions of the following aspects of the study: (1) problem(s) being addressed; (2) central claim(s); (3) data source(s) and analytic approach(es); (4) a short piece of data to support the main argument; (5) implication(s) of the findings. Please also include a 50-word summary. Abstracts will be blind-reviewed on the basis of clarity, specificity, originality, and the inclusion of the required components. Papers will be presented within a 15 or 20 minute slot with an additional 10 or 5 minutes for discussion.

6th International Digital Storytelling Conference
September 25-27, 2015
Principal Venue - Smith College, Northhampton, MA
We invite you to join us in Massachusetts this fall for an amazing gathering of digital storytelling professionals, academics, youth and activists. The conference is hosted by Smith College and the Five Campus Consortium (Smith College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Amherst College). This will be the first time the International Conference will be held in the Western Hemisphere, and we are thrilled to have an opportunity to bring the international community to the United States.
As we have watched the events of the Fall of 2014 in the United States unfold regarding issues of race and social justice, we wanted the conference to reflect the current events by focussing on a principal theme of Youth and Activism. Our goal is to hold a one day youth summit in conjunction with the 2.5 day academic and practitioner conference. The hope is that a portion of the Youth Summit will be integrated into one event. In addition, we will be inviting an exploration of any number of additional themes including the use of Digital Storytelling in public health, curriculum, intercultural and international education, service learning, sustainability and the environment, heritage and memory, participation and social inclusion, as well as new and innovative forms of participatory media.
The conference will host various events in its structure for inclusion of diverse perspectives and voices. While there will be a formal process of juried paper presentation sessions for academics, we will also provide space for practitioners from community settings to present. We will work to have exhibition opportunities for individual digital stories, as well as a number of ancillary workshops, special events, and exhibitions to be held in the period surrounding the conference.
The conference invites proposals for academic papers that discuss digital storytelling and its theoretical, social, and cultural contexts. We also invite proposals from digital storytelling practitioners interested in reflecting on their work in community-based participatory media. All presenters are encouraged to show examples of digital stories within their allocated 15 to 20-minutes presentations.

CFP: Symposium on Language Policy: Language and Exclusion
Deadline February 15, 2015
The Study Group on Language at the United Nations in cooperation with The Centre for Research and Documentation on World Language Problems are currently organizing a Symposium on Language and Exclusion.
The organizers welcome proposals for brief 20-minute papers on topics such as the following:
- Language policy in international organizations
- Language parity in international settings
- Language use at, and by, the United Nations
- Language as a factor in sustainable development
- Language and human rights
- Discrimination on grounds of language
- Language and the post-2015 development agenda
- The role of language in international peacekeeping
- Language and globalization
- Language and minority rights
- Mother-tongue education
- NGOs and language policy
Please send proposals (200 words or less) to the chair of the symposium organizing committee, Prof. Humphrey Tonkin, at
tonkin@hartford.edu, by February 15, 2015. The committee expects to make final decisions on the program by March 1.
