<Tagline>A terrific interview and pictures - Women's Studio Workshop</Tagline>

UMBC Associate Professor of Visual Arts and Asian Studies Irene Chan first came to Women's Studio Workshop in 1996 as a studio intern, then returned two years later as an Artist’s Book Resident to produce Cè, a sculptural book inspired by Chinese philosophy.

In the years since, Irene has cultivated a multidisciplinary conceptual practice, working at the intersection of print media, papermaking, installation, storytelling performance, and book arts. Her recent work stretches the physicality of the book form while exploring popular culture, racial stereotypes, autobiography, and oral history.

Irene Chan has self-published 29 limited-edition artist books as Ch’An Press and has exhibited and performed her work at over 76 venues in the last 10 years.

Ellen Handler Spitz in The New York Times Sunday Book Review

<Tagline>Poetry is an inexhaustible gift for children</Tagline>

In her article in the Sunday Book Review titled “That Amherst Belle,” Ellen Handler Spitz reviews two new children’s books: Eileen Spinelli’s “Another Day as Emily,” illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff, and Burleigh Mutén’s “Miss Emily,” illustrated by Matt Phelan. She notes the two books “strive to create, by very different means and with different results, a sense of the poet Emily Dickinson as a person.”

Spitz writes the two books do a good job of introducing readers to Dickinson’s “eccentric persona,” but an opportunity is lost because none of Dickinson’s poems is printed in full in either book.

Ellen Handler Spitz has written frequently about children’s literature for The New Republicand is author of “Illuminating Childhood.”
