Course dates: May 29 - June 14, 2017

Course title: Climate Change at the Forest-Water Nexus 

The goal of this field course is to provide students with an applied and active learning experience in the Tropics through a mixture of interdisciplinary fieldwork, service-learning, and environmental/cultural engagement.   Students will directly engage with rural communities through integrated fieldwork and service projects, gaining hands-on experience in social science field research (participatory photo mapping), environmental engineering fieldwork (water quality monitoring), and field ecology techniques (monitoring cloud forests and avian biodiversity).  Together, the group will work to weave together these three fieldwork efforts into a more comprehensive understanding of climate change impacts at the forest-water nexus as it is represented in the Monteverde region in Costa Rica. 

Note: This course offered as a GES 400/600-level Special Topics course, and will therefore be open to enrollment by both undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of major concentration.  While there is no minimum language requirement, students with strong communication skills in Spanish (completion of at least one 300-level Spanish language course, or native fluency) will be given special consideration.

Position Title: Graduate Student Researcher (Two positions available)

Status: Temporary (full-time, 12-week, summer internship)

Report to: Assistant Vice President, Research and Policy Analysis

Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President, Research and Policy Analysis, the Graduate Student Researchers will conduct review of relevant literatures, perform data analysis, and prepare summaries of findings and draft manuscripts in relation to an externally supported research project(s) that investigate labor market outcomes of master’s and doctoral education.

Stipend • Compatible stipend for a three-month work in Washington, D.C. The start/end dates can be negotiable depending on your institution’s calendar system (e.g., quarter v. semester). This position will be based at the CGS office in Washington, D.C. Professional development opportunities may be available.

#QueerAF is a hashtag used on Twitter and Tumblr by trans, lesbian, gay, bisexual, androgynous and gender fluid users to celebrate content that is unapologetically queer, or “queer as fuck.” The use of “AF” in the title of this conference indicates our interest in exploring the power of language to form community in a digital space through the assignation of #QueerAF. The invocation of slurs such as queer, dyke, homo, slut, bitch, and tranny degrades individuals, and those same words have been subsequently reclaimed, yet not without deep controversy. Establishing a conference that is “#QueerAF” represents our resistance to societal politeness by participating in the reclamation of “queer” and disrupting the heteronormative discourse that terms certain behaviors and bodies dangerous or degenerate.

The conference theme draws on multiple disciplines and perspectives on gender and sexuality, inviting challenges to the heteronormative, cisgender, patriarchal discourse of history. Proposals are invited for papers on any aspect of Gender & Sexuality across all time periods and geographical locations.  In particular, this conference will be centering around three major themes: Historical & Cultural studies, Linguistics & Theory, and Activism & Media.

Steven Dashiell (Cohort 16) has recently published a blog entry titled “Resolving the Study of Geek, or What to Do When You Become “That Brony Researcher”” In the article, Steven explains how he has been able to identify and work with his dissertation topic. He mentions how “thinking strategically” from an early stage, an idea instilled by his LLC advisor, opens the path to doctoral students to engage with research and to identify themes that will become crucial in their dissertation.
