“UNPROFESSIONAL POLITICIANS:
CONSIDERING THE LOTTOCRATIC
ALTERNATIVE”
Abstract:
There is a general sense that electoral political systems are not working well, a theme stressed by both the Sanders and Trump campaigns. There is empirical evidence that supports this. This talk offers a diagnosis of the failures of electoral politics, and, perhaps more exciting, a solution: single-issue legislatures combined with political officials chosen at random from the citizenry. This talk will present and raise trouble for this solution, focusing on one particular dimension of concern: would "we the people" be up to the job?

In the spirit of promoting self-driven, collaborative, meaningful, and sustainable professional development, CLLC 2017 focuses on the professional identities, communities, beliefs, and practices of educators and how they can all be harnessed to enhance and advance the lifelong learning we recognize as the ideal meaning of the phrase “teacher education.” Our goal is to involve pre- and in-service teachers, teacher educators, administrators, researchers, and other professionals at all stages of their careers in a multidirectional sharing of expertise and experiences that will contribute to future exploratory practice and professional growth.
PLENARY SPEAKERS
Dr. Joy Kreeft Peyton (Center for Applied Linguistics) on collaborative international online professional development
Dr. Arieh Sherris (Texas A&M University-Kingsville) on agency and activism in situated teacher practices
Dr. Rashi Jain (Montgomery College) on translingually responsive pedagogy
CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Proposals for paper and poster presentations, practice-oriented sessions and workshops, colloquia, and panel discussions are invited in areas related to the themes of educators' professional identities, communities, beliefs, and practices until December 5, 2016.
Presentation topics need not address the topic of teacher education directly; we welcome proposals on anything that educators themselves would consider worthwhile for enhancing their own and their colleagues’ professional development and daily practices.

Dear Members of the ANCS Community,
I am writing to invite you all to the ANCS Reunion to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of UMBC on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 2:00 until 5:30 on the seventh floor of A.O. Kuhn Library. Come and meet our alumni and see what an ANCS education is all about.
Emeriti Professors Walt Sherwin, Jay Freyman, and Carolyn Koehler will be joining us for the event. 2005 ANCS graduate and Columbia University Assistant Professor Joe Howley will be our featured speaker. I do hope you can join us for the festivities.
The meal is being catered by Acropolis restaurant. We will have a cash bar courtesy of Glenmore Catering. The cost of the event is $30/person. However, currently enrolled majors and minors can attend at no cost.

Sarah Shin publishes book exploring ESL teaching
After conducting in-depth interviews and observations of students in a teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) graduate program, Sarah Shin, professor of education and special assistant to the provost for academic initiatives, has published a new book that examines TESOL as a second career.
The book, titled English Language Teaching as a Second Career (Multilingual Matters 2016), explores the challenges and successes that professionals ages 45-73 go through as they develop as teachers and launch their second careers.
In the book, Shin explains that many adults are transitioning into new professions and working later into what has traditionally been retirement age. She explains how the students she interviewed think of TESOL as it relates to their overall life goals and achievements and how they want to improve the quality of life in their communities through education.
“A welcome addition to the growing literature on teacher development, this book will be an important resource for teacher trainers and anyone working in TESOL,” the publisher states on the book’s back cover.
The text has received many favorable reviews for its ethnographic approach to reflecting on teacher experiences as they begin second careers in the context of growing demand for K-12 English language teachers in the United States.
“Sarah Shin makes a compelling case for the demographic changes in education and the accompanying challenges and opportunities for training a new breed of ESL teachers who bring profound real world experiences to their classrooms. A ‘must read’ for teacher trainers and for baby boomers contemplating how the next chapter in their life story will be written,” shared G. Richard Tucker, Carnegie Mellon University, in a review.
Shin is an expert in bilingualism, heritage language education, and TESOL teacher training. She is the author of two previous books Bilingualism in Schools and Society(Routledge) and Developing in Two Languages(Multilingual Matters). Earlier this year, Shin was selected for inaugural class of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) emerging leaders program. William H. "Billy" Murphy, Jr. has been repeatedly recognized and honored as one of the greatest trial lawyers in the nation and in Maryland history. He has been deeply involved in the civil rights and progressive movement since he was 14, the women's rights movement since 1967, the movement to increase the fairness of the criminal justice system and to end police misconduct since 1970, and the movement for fair treatment of Latino and Hispanic immigrants since 2007. He will address us about the role men should play in advancing the women's movement and the social and political implications of the Freddie Gray case and the recent devastating Department of Justice report on policing in Baltimore City.

Congratulations to Ging Shamberger and James Harris for this accomplishment; we look forward to a wonderful presentation.
The conference, focused on the theme of #IAM Intellectual Activist Movement(s), "will be a a space of reflection and dialogue about the value of being an intellectual/activist: on lessons learned, on unanswered questions, on how changing socio-cultural landscapes interact with our work, and on what it means to be an intellectual activist in 2016 in Baltimore, the U.S., and internationally."

Do you have a talent and passion for writing, but are not sure how to pursue it as a career? Do you want to know what it really takes to become a successful writer? Whether you are interested in creative writing, publishing, technical writing, PR/communications, or blogging, the Career Center's Inside Scoop: Careers in Writing event is for you. This event will be held on Monday, October 3, 2016, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM in the Commons, Room 331. Come meet a panel of local professionals to hear how the launched their writing-based careers. Panelists will include:
Seth Sawyers (UMBC '95) is a writer whose creative nonfiction and fiction has appeared in The Rumpus, The Millions, Salon, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Sports Illustrated, The Baltimore Sun, and elsewhere. An editor at the Baltimore Review and a former adjunct instructor with the UMBC Department of English, he is at work on a novel. He also works as a sales writer for a healthcare firm based in Columbia.
Jamaila Brinkley (UMBC '05) spent ten years writing technical documents for government clients before retiring to use all of her pent-up creativity to write fiction and raise her family. She is the author of historical romance with a hint of magic. Her first book, Thieves' Honor, was released in May 2016 from Soul Mate Publishing.
Stephanie Shaffer (UMBC '13) is a former English and French double major, Writing Fellow, and Writing Tutor at UMBC. Now, she is an editor at iJET International, which provides intelligence-driven, integrated risk management solutions that enable multinational organizations to operate globally with confidence.
Megan Hanks (Lehigh University '11) is now the STEM Communications Manager at UMBC. She held a full-time internship at a public relations agency outside of Philadelphia and then went to work for a different public relations company. She got her first official job at a membership organization for physicians where she did public relations, media relations, and internal communications.

In the book, Shin explains that many adults are transitioning into new professions and working later into what has traditionally been retirement age. She explains how the students she interviewed think of TESOL as it relates to their overall life goals and achievements and how they want to improve the quality of life in their communities through education.
