Chapter Zero, a work by Karena Ingram '16, Music Composition alumna, was selected to be featured on a solo CD project by Dr. Iwona Glinka
Dr. Iwona Glinka is a Polish flautist and soloist in new and experimental music. She is the founder of the Phasma-Music Ensemble, and has toured as a featured performer and ensemble member throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. After responding to her competition for one-minute solo flute pieces, Glinka was kind enough to select my work, Chapter Zero, as a winner. She will be recording the pieces she has selected in a solo album and performing them in the fall. Chapter Zero is inspired by the artwork of Irene Chan called Chapter Zero. This installment features a plastic flower floating in water, etched with the words “existence,” “non-existence,” “both,” and ”neither.” The piece depicts the minimal quality of the artwork while capturing the textures and essence of water and words.

MuseWeb is offering $25,000 in funding to help you tell your stories through open mobile platforms. 20 projects will be granted $1,000 each to create location-based digital content about Baltimore’s cultural heritage and collections designed for mobile users. After the delivery of the projects on August 15, a further $5,000 in matching grants will be divided among the most successful projects for creating additional content and expanding the mobile experiences.

New research evaluates school discipline policies
New research published by Public Policy assistant professor F. Chris Curran examines the impact of state
zero tolerance laws on suspension rates, racial gaps in discipline, and student
behavior. The article, “Estimating the Effect of State Zero Tolerance Laws
on Exclusionary Discipline, Racial Discipline Gaps, and Student Behavior,” is
available in the Online First section of Educational
Evaluation and Policy Analysis. His work demonstrates that the presence of
a state mandatory expulsion law, one that mandates expulsion for offenses such
as weapons or assault, is predictive of increased use of exclusionary
discipline. Furthermore, the increase is greater for Black and Hispanic
students than for White students. For instance, Curran finds the presence
of such a state law predicts a three time larger increase in suspensions for
Black students as compared to White students.
The
research was featured in the "Hit and Run" blog on Reason.com,
and was mentioned in Politico's
Morning Education Report under the heading “And on a related note, new school
discipline research.”

Social Media Technology Conference & Workshop
Call for Papers, Workshops, Panels and Posters due June 30th
The 6th Annual Social Media Technology Conference & Workshop is a two-day intensive conference combining panel discussions, poster sessions and hands-on workshops designed to enlighten attendees about new scholarship, professional practices and pedagogical approaches to teaching. It will be held at Howard University on October 6-7, 2016. This year's theme - Social Media and Voices in the Margins - focuses on dissecting how power and difference force or provide an opportunity for social media to be used by those who may be considered marginalized in U.S. society or within other countries. The goal is to bring scholars and professionals together to share their perspectives on how social media are utilized by various individuals, groups, cultures or organizations to bring their voice, influence and impact on societies.

The Office of Graduate Student Life (OGSL) is currently seeking a Communications Manager for 20 hours a week for Fall and Spring AY17.
This graduate assistantship is the manager for all communications between GSA, OGSL, graduate students, and the greater UMBC/Baltimore community. This includes e-mail inbox management, updating social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the MyUMBC portal), and co-managing the GSA website (recently formatted in WordPress and Google). This GA manages logistics of all GSA events (catering, room reservations, scheduling), including monthly Senate meetings and social hours, National Graduate Student Week (spring), the 39th Graduate Research Conference, and special events (i.e. Fall Welcome Picnic, GSA Awards Banquet).

Jitu is a master organizer. He was the education organizer for the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO) in Chicago--the oldest African-American led Grassroots organizing group in the city. He has over 24 years experience bringing Grassroots voices and vision to the table. Power of Narrative in the Virtual Public Sphere
The Power of Narrative in the Virtual Public Square is part of a larger project, Baltimore Stories, funded by the NEH, that UMCP, UMBC Dresher Center, UMBC Imaging Research Center (IRC) and the Enoch Pratt are co-sponsoring. On June 8, Joe Tropea (History M.A. alum) will talk about the documentary he produced and directed with Skizz Cyzkof called "Hit and Stay" about the Catonsville Nine and other draft board actions during the Vietnam War. On June 11, Denise Meringolo, Director of UMBC Public History MA, will be talking about the public digital archive of the April 2015 events that she and many collaborators have developed.
Dr. Bickel and Sherella Cupid are working with a team from the IRC (Lee Boot, Chris Kojzar and Jaclin Paul) on five Baltimore community events as part of this larger project that are focused on culture, stories and arts and their central role in our Baltimore lives and the changing economy of the city and region. These events will be held over the summer and next fall. More information on those will be posted on the LLC group also.

Enoch Pratt Library: Southeast Anchor Branch, 3601 Eastern Ave., Baltimore
In today’s society, technology and social media create virtual public spaces where stories and narratives are created, shared, written, rewritten, and archived. Following the death of Freddie Gray, the Maryland Historical Society, University of Baltimore, and University of Maryland, Baltimore County jointly created a digital archive of stories and photographs as a way of building and telling a more complete story. Twitter is another virtual public square where the events in Baltimore were discussed.
The focus of this public program will be on exploring how people who participated in virtual public spaces during the events following the killing of Freddie Gray think about their involvement in the shaping of the narrative. In this public program, data storytelling experts will come together with Baltimore residents to discuss engagement in virtual public spaces. Participants will discuss how social media changes the narrative(s) and the interrelationships between social media and legacy media, the more traditional means of communication and expression that predate the internet.

Congratulations to our very own INDS alum, Yoo-Jin Kang, for her UMBC Review publication! Yoo-Jin recently graduated last year in 2015 with a double major in her INDS Degree concentration in: Psychosocial and Cultural Perspectives on Violence, as well as a major in Language & Cultural Studies.Even after they graduate, our students always find brilliant ways to make us proud.
