St. Mary’s College of Maryland is accepting applications for the position of Adjunct Instructor of Spanish. The position requires teaching two elementary level Spanish courses per semester in fall 2016 and spring 2017.  Native or near-native fluency required and an advanced degree and teaching experience preferred.  This is a contingent position with no benefits provided and a salary range of $3750 to $4000 per course.

Rooted in sociocultural learning theory and stemming from Luis Moll’s research, this study explores how educators can apply students’ out-of-school lives to secondary science content. This inquiry was conducted as a collaborative ethnographic study of a teacher and her class of students who “would not typically take chemistry in high school.” It focuses on how the teacher built a learning community that incorporated diverse students’ funds of knowledge. Rather than just getting her students to pass the class needed for college admission, this study shows how the teacher was able to move her students from the margins of science learning toward the epicenter of a science-understanding community.

"Baltimore Stories: Narratives in the Life of an American City" is a year-long, grant-funded educational program examining narrative, race and power. The program will kick-off on Wednesday, March 23rd with a free public forum, led by the University of Maryland Arts and Humanities Center for Synergy and Maryland Humanities Council, at Westminster Hall in Baltimore. Morning speakers will include David Simon, author, journalist and writer of Homicide: Life on the Streets and The Wire, and Dr. Khalil Gibran Muhammad, historian and director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The afternoon session will be a response to the morning's ideas and will include University of Maryland historian Dr. Christopher Bonner and a panel of local humanists, public intellectuals, activists and the audience. The UMBC Dresher Center for the Humanities will convene a public conversation and digital storytelling workshop, entitled "Multiple Communities, Multiple Stories, Multiple Modes," at the Creative Alliance in Baltimore on Saturday, April 23rd from noon-4:00 p.m. Information and registration is forthcoming.

Baltimore Stories is made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities' Humanities in the Public Square Program and is a collaboration between the University of Maryland, Maryland Humanities Council, UMBC, Enoch Pratt Free Library and the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.

There's nothing like a glowing phone screen two rows in front of you during a concert to ruin the experience. But what if the phone could be changed from an annoyance to an enhancement? 

Octava is a smartphone app that aims to do just that. Developed by Linda Dusman, Music, and Eric Smallwood, Visual Arts, the app delivers background information, historical facts, and other contextual details straight to your pocket. According to Octava's website, it is a tool that "provides performing arts venues with the ability to enrich a performance with supplemental information delivered in real time. This enables the audience to glance at information about the performance or event at the exact moment when the information is most pertinent."

Octava's beta test with the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra in Houston in February was covered by the local NPR station, and was picked up for national distribution on WGBH's "Here and Now." Learn more about the app, and watch it in action, before it comes to a venue near you! 

1. RISE Postdoctoral Fellows — We invite Native American, Black, Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander women and men who are in their final semester of doctoral study (ABD) or those who completed their doctorates within the past three years to apply for a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Center for the Study of Race & Equity in Education. Most appealing to us are scholars who earned a Ph.D. in education, health, human services, social policy, criminal justice, workforce development, or a closely related field. Three postdocs will be selected to work with RISE, starting July 1, 2016. The fellowship pays $55,000 per year, plus health insurance. Preference will be given to those who have experience working with large datasets. Review of applications begins Tuesday, March 15, 2016 and will continue until the three postdocs are selected. 2. RISE Grad Prep Academy Scholars — We invite Native American, Black, Latino, Asian American and Pacific Islander undergraduate men who are presently in their junior year to apply for participation in our Grad Prep Academy, a project that prepares undergraduates for doctoral study and research-related careers in the five RISE fields: education, health, human services and social policy, juvenile and criminal justice, and workforce development. This program includes a four-day visit to the University of Pennsylvania. We will select 32 juniors (8 per racial/ethnic group) and cover all their travel expenses, lodging, and meals. We will also pay for Academy participants to take a four-week Kaplan course valued at $1,200 to prepare for the GRE. Additionally, each Academy scholar will be paired with a current Ph.D. student of color who will offer mentoring throughout the graduate school application process. Participation in the Academy is limited to undergraduate men of color who are currently in their junior year. Applications are due by Monday, May 2, 2016.
