Ceraso's Seminar Profiled on UMBC News
In Fall 2015, Professor Steph Ceraso hosted an exciting new course on "Sound, Composition, and Culture" that culminated with "a multisensory dining event to inspire students to think holistically about how sound works with other senses to shape experiences." The event, sponsored by the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) and Design, Cultures, and Creative (DCC) program at the University of Maryland, College Park, encouraged students to consider critically the sounds that we experience in our daily encounters. Recently, this project was highlighted by UMBC News in an extended story outlining the dining event and conversation of sonic research in which Dr. Ceraso is a valuable part. Congratulations to Dr. Ceraso and her seminar students for the exceptional work and for giving us a fresh perspective on sound and culture in the digital world.

DiCuirci's Seminar Profiled on UMBC News
Earlier this semester, Professor Lindsay DiCuirci announced the launch of a collaborative digital exhibition with the American Antiquarian Society. Students in Dr. DiCuirci's seminar selected the items, organized and designed the exhibits, and composed essays and item labels. The product of a semester-long research project for students in her seminar on women and periodicals, "Mill Girls in Nineteenth Century Print" is now a permanent exhibition on the American Antiquarian Society (AAS) website--a testament to the strong collaborative and scholarly work that our students produce. Recently this achievement has been highlighted by UMBC News in an expanded story on the exhibition and its findings. Congratulations once again to Dr. DiCuirci and her seminar students for this outstanding work.

INDS Petrovich Lecture: James Valentine!

Mr. Valentine graduated Magna Cum Laude from UMBC, with an INDS degree in Social Perspectives on Biomedical Ethics.
Mr. Valentine will discuss the challenges and opportunities for orphan drugs within the drug development and approval system in the United States. As part of this discussion, he will highlight new improvements in FDA’s regulatory framework intended to expedite the development and review of these drugs. The lecture will also explore the interdisciplinary nature of drug development that is an everyday aspect of Mr. Valentine’s practice.

UMBC Student Delegates at the Model African Union Summit
Professor Chuku leads student delegation at Model AU
Professor Gloria Chuku led a ten-student delegation to the 14th Model African Union summit February 17-21, 2016 in Washington, DC. Sarah Agarrat, Micahyas Akama, Ayodele Daniel, Yenin Gnaka, Maada Kaikai, Rungano Kaiyo, Tapiwa Kandemiri, Dozie Oguike, and Philip Swanson represented Egypt and South Sudan and received certificates of participation. The students held themselves well as true ambassadors of UMBC and the two countries they represented! A rewarding and memorable experience for all.

Taking action with the Real Food Challenge Summit at Hopkins
HAPP major Maura Smith and other UMBC students attend Summit
From February 11th-14th, Hopkins hosted the Real Food Challenge Leadership Summit for schools from Virginia all the way up to Massachusetts to meet and learn about political strategy for campus food policy.
HAPP student Maura Smith and other UMBC students marched to Elijah Cummings' office to ask him to pressure his colleagues into making their stance on the TPP public and thank him for making his own opposition public. A delegation of 6 students was sent into Elijah Cummings' office, including UMBC students Gurleen Ahuja and Thomas Eliason.
