Freeman-ASIA Scholarship for Study Abroad
The
Institute of International Education (IIE) is now accepting
applications for summer 2016 Freeman Awards for Study in Asia
(Freeman-ASIA).
The student deadline for summer 2016 is March 1, and the adviser deadline is March 8. To access the application, and to learn more about eligibility, timelines, and scholarship requirements, please visit our website: http://www.iie.org/Programs/Freeman-ASIA.
The
Freeman Foundation’s generous support for the relaunch of Freeman-ASIA
builds on prior grants to IIE that funded more than 4,500 American
undergraduates in Asia from 2001 to 2014. The newly available awards
will advance IIE’s Generation Study Abroad, a five-year initiative
aiming to double the number of U.S. students abroad by the end of the
decade by mobilizing resources and commitments across the higher
education, philanthropy and corporate sectors.
The Freeman-ASIA
relaunch is the latest of several steps IIE has taken to increase the
number and diversity of Americans studying abroad and their study
destinations. Studying in Asia before graduating can give students a
competitive advantage in their professional careers, especially when
collaborating with international peers. More than half of Freeman-ASIA
alumni reported being employed in a position related to Asian affairs or
requiring knowledge of an Asian language. As more employers seek new
hires with meaningful and substantive experience in Asia, it is critical
that more Americans learn about and engage with Asian economies,
political systems and cultures.

Loren Henderson, Assistant Professor of Sociology, and Cedric Herring, Professor and Director of the Language, Literacy, and Culture PhD Program, presented their research on the cultural and structural sources of racial disparities in wealth at the United Nations conference on “Poverty, Inequality, and Global Conflict.”

Deadline Approaching for Summer Faculty Fellowship Proposals
The application deadline for Dresher Center Summer Faculty Research Fellowships (SFRF) is February 15, 2016.
Full-time, tenure-track faculty pursuing humanities research in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences are welcome to submit proposals for a Dresher Center SFRF. Summer Faculty Research Fellows will receive support for research and assistance in developing extramural funding applications, book proposals, and grant project applications. Funding may also be used for the completion of book manuscripts, major articles, or projects of a similar stature.

Call for Paid Summer Research Assistants
Civil Rights in Black and Brown: Oral History of the Multiracial Freedom Struggle in Texas
A Collaborative Research Project Housed at TCU – Texas Christian University – crbb.tcu.edu
Project Overview
Not one but two civil rights movements flourished in mid-twentieth century Texas—and they did so in intimate conversation with one another. While most research on American race relations has utilized a binary analytical lens— examining either “black” vs. “white” or “Anglo” vs. “Mexican”—this project bridges cultures by collecting and interpreting four hundred new oral history interviews with members of all three groups, simultaneously. Covering the period since the onset of civil rights era, the interviews with African American, Mexican American, and white activists located in fifteen sites throughout the large, diverse state will add new depth to the study of “black/brown” relations past and present. In addition to archiving the full oral histories and using them as the basis for scholarly works, the project features a free, publicly-accessible digital humanities website that displays short digital video interviews clips, each with its own metadata to allow for easy searching across the entire collection. The project is directed by Max Krochmal (TCU), Marvin Dulaney (UT-Arlington), Todd Moye (University of North Texas), and Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez (UT-Austin). Summary of Position
Research Assistants (RAs) will be assigned to selected field sites in Texas for eight weeks of full-time oral history fieldwork. With assistance from the project directors, RAs will contact gatekeepers, consultants, and community leaders and then interview a wide range of activists who contributed to the black and brown freedom struggles (broadly defined) in their respective cities. RAs will also manage and process digital video interview data to add the project website. Work will begin with a two-day training and workshop at TCU on June 2-3, 2016; will continue with fieldwork taking place June 6 to July 30 (including a retreat around the 4th of July); and conclude with a two-day wrap-up meeting and data processing at TCU on August 1-2, 2016.
Compensation
Research Assistants will receive a minimum $5,000 stipend for almost nine weeks of work as well as living and traveling expenses. RAs will also be invited to contribute to an edited anthology or other works stemming from the project.

UMBC faculty provide 2016 election analysis
Featured in local and national media outlets
With the Iowa Caucuses just days away, UMBC faculty have been in the news weighing in on the current state of the presidential race. Kimberly Moffitt, an associate professor of American studies, was a guest on the Baltimore Sun podcast “Roughly Speaking with Dan Rodricks” to discuss the recent Republican presidential debate on Fox Business Network. During the segment, Moffitt shared her thoughts on the interactions between candidates and economic and foreign policy issues in the race, among other topics of discussion.
Political Science Professor and Chair Thomas Schaller wrote an opinion piece for The Hill that focused on the rise of Sen. Ted Cruz, drawing on arguments made in his latest bookThe Stronghold that the Republican Party’s recent focus on its congressional wing has had an impact on presidential elections.
Focusing on local election issues, School of Public Policy Professor and Director Donald Norris was quoted in aBaltimore Sun article about former Md. Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown’s campaign finance status and provided context for a NorthJersey.com article about a ballot question this fall that would authorize expanding casino gambling in New Jersey. Norris described the media campaign surrounding the 2012 ballot question in Maryland over whether to allow a new casino in Prince Georges County.
