The Modern Language faculty at UWL are excited to announce a tenure track, Assistant Professor of Spanish position to begin August 26, 2016. We seek applications from individuals who hold a Ph.D. in Spanish with specialization in language pedagogy, or a related field, who have native or near-native fluency in Spanish, and who have at least three years experience teaching in a K-12 setting (Spanish, another language, or bilingual). The candidates ability to teach courses in language teaching methodology, second language acquisition, and courses in introductory linguistics is highly desirable. Experience with edTPA (Teacher Performance Assessment) will strengthen the application. Our new faculty member will join colleagues who teach language and other courses at all undergraduate levels, and will enjoy a community of scholars dedicated to the development and support of ongoing scholarship. In addition, the successful candidate will participate in service activities at departmental, college, and university levels. Candidates who have experience with a variety of teaching methods, have knowledge of or experience working with culturally diverse groups, have the potential to obtain research funding and have a strong desire to incorporate undergraduate students in their research activities are preferred.

This position is affiliated with the School of Education and the dean of the School of Education will provide feedback regarding hiring and personnel reviews to the department.

The Maryland Historical Trust (MHT), the State's historic preservation office, located within the Maryland Department of Planning (MDP), is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual to fill the position of Assistant Grants Manager in its Office of Administration. 

This position primarily performs duties associated with the administration of State-funded Historical Preservation, Maryland Heritage Area Authority and African American Heritage Preservation Grant Programs. This position also assists the Grants Manager with the State Loan Program, the Federally-funded Certified Local Government Pass-Through Grants, and with preparation of the annual National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund Application and End of Year Report, as needed. This position directly supports the Agency's mission by managing financial assistance programs that result in the protection and enhancement of Maryland's historical and cultural resources.

The UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee (AFAC) is pleased to announce that we have been allocated professional development funding for adjunct faculty. 

UMBC recently established the fund, to be administered annually by the AFAC as a standing university committee, to support professional development for adjunct faculty.

Awards for each individual adjunct faculty member will not exceed $500 in the academic year. Amount of individual awards may be affected by factors including number of applicants.

In conjunction with the inauguration of University of Pennsylvania’s new Center for the Integrated Study of Japan, Constantine Vaporis presented an invited talk that focused on his research about travel in Early Modern Japan and what it revealed about healing, discovery, and political obligation and coercion, among other elements of life during that time period.

Vaporis, professor of history and director of the Asian studies program, teaches Japanese and East Asian history and has received numerous fellowships for research in Japanese history including a Fulbright Scholar’s Award and an NEH Fellowship for College Teachers. He is author of Breaking Barriers: Travel and the State in Early Modern Japan; Tour of Duty: Samurai, Military Service in Edo and the Culture of Early Modern Japan; Nihonjin to sankin kôtai [The Japanese and Alternate Attendance]; and Voices of Early Modern Japan. Contemporary Accounts of Daily Life during the Age of the Shoguns.

Vaporis’ lecture “The Edo Man and the Satsuma Sweet Potato: Early Modern Travel through a Japanese prism,” highlighted how travel established connections between citizens and the state during the early modern era of 1600-1868 unlike few other institutions of the time. His talk explored the contours of the elements that defined travel during that time period with an eye to their global context. A National Journal article published November 23 examines why even with the recent boom in podcasts, there’s still a lack of underrepresented minorities in tech. Jason Loviglio, an expert in media and radio studies and associate professor and chair of media and communication studies, attended the 2015 Podcast Movement in Texas earlier this year and noticed a lack of diversity among podcasters at the conference.

“It felt very main­stream white,” said Loviglio in the National Journal article. “What I saw at the con­fer­ence did seem like the obstacles, or re­quire­ments, or trends, or cul­ture of pod­cast­ing at that mo­ment had the po­ten­tial to mar­gin­al­ize minor­it­ies and people who lack cap­it­al for some of these things.”

Because podcasts are still a recent phenomenon, Loviglio commented in the article that he expects diversity among podcast hosts and producers will increase as time goes on and more podcasts are developed.

“If it does be­come something big then there will be very cre­at­ive ways that dif­fer­ent com­munit­ies in the coun­try and around the world change it to make it work.”
