CFP: Conference on Community Writing University of Colorado Boulder, October 16-17, 2015
The con­fer­ence theme, Build­ing Engaged Infra­struc­ture, chal­lenges atten­dees to build eth­i­cal and durable community-university part­ner­ships through teach­ing, research, and com­mu­nity writ­ing, simul­ta­ne­ously chal­leng­ing fac­ulty who do community-engaged work to find sup­port within uni­ver­sity depart­ments. The theme also explores how to build insti­tu­tional sup­port for depart­ments them­selves as they become more com­mit­ted to community-engaged instruc­tion and schol­ar­ship across the cur­ricu­lum.  Build­ing that infra­struc­ture of sup­port, resources, and rela­tion­ships is essen­tial if the work is to be sustainable.

The organizers wel­come pro­pos­als from aca­d­e­mics of all lev­els involved with engage­ment activ­i­ties and com­mu­nity mem­bers involved in work­ing for social change for indi­vid­ual papers, pan­els of 3–4 pre­sen­ters, work­shops, and dig­i­tal “posters”  that will help under­stand how writ­ing func­tions socially to inform, to empower, and to trans­form and how to build infra­struc­ture to sup­port engaged research and ped­a­gogy. Please feel free to con­tact the con­fer­ence com­mit­tee before propos­ing with any ques­tions about pre­sent­ing or ideas for workshops.

Campus Compact, a network of universities and individuals dedicated to creating strong civic engagement, service-learning, and community partnerships in the Maryland and D.C. area. On March 28, 2015, roughly 300 students, faculty, staff, and community partners will gather at American University to discuss the achievements and challenges made over the last year – and the work that still has to be done moving forward.

WORKSHOP PROPOSALS

The conference will feature concurrent workshops led by faculty, staff, students, and/or community organization representatives.  The SLCE planning committee is now accepting workshop proposals as well as poster session proposals in the following topics:   

1. CONNECT: Community Partnerships-What are the best practices in "connection" for community-campus partnerships, and what are we learning? Examples in this area include the process of initiating and sustaining community-campus partnerships, setting short and long-term goals, the outcomes and impacts of these efforts, and innovative initiatives with community organizations. Presentations should include partner voice.

2. CREATE: Social Change Leadership-How do our campus communities "create" active citizens and promote social change? Examples include campus advocacy efforts, awareness campaigns, student led service initiatives, postgraduate social justice work and careers, innovative ways to discuss diversity topics such as race, oppression, privilege, and social identity.

3. REFLECT: Academic Service-Learning-How is the community and its main issues integrated into the classroom? How do faculty, students, partners, and staff critically “reflect” upon these issues, partnerships, and impacts? Examples include service-learning course design and best practices, faculty development, reflective practice, student success stories, next steps after a service-learning course, community-based research initiatives, living-learning communities, service-learning course assessment and impact.

The English Department at Indiana University invites proposals on the symposium theme, “Digital Rhetoric: Perspectives and Definitions.” The theme is intended to foster conversations around what constitutes digital rhetoric in order to explore the myriad perspectives at work in, and coming to bear on, digital rhetoric. This event will be comprised of two keynote speakers, fifteen invited presentations, and 7-9 speakers selected from submissions to this CFP. Dr. Jody Shipka of the department of English at UMBC is one of the selected speakers for this symposium.

Focal areas might include:

- Definitions of digital rhetoric
- Digital rhetoric and the history of rhetoric
- Key perspectives on digital rhetoric
- Digital rhetoric practices, protocols, pedagogies, or performance
- Digital rhetorics and digital aesthetics

The International Advisory Board is pleased to announce the Call for Papers for the Thirteenth International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities. The Humanities Conference will be held 17-19 June 2015 at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. We welcome submissions from a variety of disciplines and perspectives and encourage faculty and students to jointly submit proposals, discussing The Humanities through one of the following themes:

Conference Themes

2015 Special Focus

In addition to the annual themes, the conference will address the special focus–From 'Digital Humanities' to a Humanities of the Digital–through keynote speakers, garden sessions, workshops, and parallel sessions that examine the following topics:
  • The ‘digital’ as a social imaginary: exploring historical continuities and ruptures in social and cultural practices in the era of digital cultures.
  • The digital within the humanities: new methods and tools for documentation, research, and representation.
  • The political economy of digital humanities: e-learning, e-publishing, and the reframing of disciplines and institutions.
  • Big data and little data; negotiating the public and the private.
  • Open access and open cultures: developing sustainable knowledge ecologies.
  • Adapting methodologies and focus in the digital age: has the dust settled on the ‘digital humanities’?
  • From the digital humanities, to a humanities of the digital; rebuilding the humanities in the shadow of the digital, and developing a humanities of the digital.
Proposal Submissions and Deadlines

Teachers College, Columbia University Working Papers in TESOL & Applied Linguistics is an online journal dedicated to publishing research in progress in the fields of TESOL and Applied Linguistics.
 
Within a conceptual framework that values an integration of theory and practice, the journal publishes full-length articles dealing, in a principled way, with language use, language acquisition, language teaching, and language assessment. The journal also publishes interviews, short commentaries, and book reviews.

The Editorial Board is currently accepting manuscripts for future issues. Articles submitted to the journal should normally be no longer than 8,000 words. Each paper must begin with an abstract not exceeding 200 words. Manuscripts submitted should follow APA format. Works referred to should be separately listed at the end of the article.
 
No information that identifies the author should be included in the paper. A separate title page should be provided, with the following information: title, the author's name, affiliation, address, and e-mail address.

The Program for Writing and Rhetoric at University of Colorado Boulder will host on October 16-17, 2015 the first Conference on Community Writing — a forum for scholars, teachers, program administrators, and community members to share scholarship and examine the theories, technologies, and best practices shaping Rhetoric and Composition, related disciplines, and the communities that house our institutions.

The Conference Committee welcomes proposals from academics of all levels — faculty, graduate students, emeritas — and community members involved with engagement activities for individual papers, panels of 3-4 presenters, and workshops that will help understand how writing functions socially to inform, to empower, and to transform and how to build infrastructure to support engaged research and pedagogy.

The fourth annual Mid-Atlantic Student Colloquium on Speech, Language and Learning will be hosted at the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD) on Friday, January 30 2015. The Student Colloquium is intended to bring together students taking computational approaches to speech, language, and learning, so that they can introduce their research to the local student community, give and receive feedback, and engage each other in collaborative discussion.

Students are encouraged to submit abstracts describing ongoing, planned, or completed research projects, including previously published results and negative results. Student research in any field applying computational methods to any aspect of human language, including speech and learning, from all areas of computer science, linguistics, engineering, neuroscience, information science, and related fields, is welcome. Submissions and presentations must be made by students or postdocs. All accepted submissions will be presented as posters and some will also be invited for short oral presentations.

Student-led breakout sessions of one hour will also be held to discuss papers on topics of interest. The purpose of these discussion sessions is to stimulate interaction and discussion. Topics and suggested papers for breakout sessions should be submitted by students.

There will be no registration fee. Students and postdocs are encouraged to consult with their supervisors about potential reimbursement of travel expenses.

Description

The Winter Roundtable is the longest running continuing professional education program in the United States devoted solely to cultural issues in psychology and education. The Winter Roundtable will continue its tradition of bringing together scholars, practitioners, researchers, social change agents and students interested in the intersections between race, ethnicity, social class, gender, sexual orientation, and religious affiliation in psychology and education.

This year's theme, "#hoodiesup2015: breaking cycles of violence, building alliances, mobilizing resources", celebrates 32 years of accomplishments, while beholding the promise of fighting social injustice by leaders in the fields of cultural psychology and education. 

The roundtable will emphasize research and interventions in community, school, and family settings, as well as individual development, regarding a wide range of topics, including language, literacy, access, wellness, cultural values, and experiences with oppression and discrimination.

THE END(S) OF ELECTRONIC LITERATURE

The 2015 Electronic Literature Organization conference and festival will take place August 5 - 7th 2015. The conference will be hosted by the Bergen Electronic Literature research group at the University of Bergen, Norway with sessions at venues including the University of Bergen, Det Akademiske Kvarteret, the Bergen Public Library, the University of Bergen Arts library, and local arts venues. Bergen is Norway's second-largest city, known as the gateway to the fjords, a festival city and cultural center with a lively and innovative arts scene.

Deadlines

The deadline for submissions of research, workshop, and arts proposals is December 15, 2014.

Conference Theme

The theme of the 2015 Electronic Literature Organization conference and festival is “The End(s) of Electronic Literature.” This theme plays on several different meanings of “ends.” Topics the conference papers and works will explore include:

Is “electronic literature” a transitional term that will become obsolete as literary uses of computational media and devices become ubiquitous? If so, what comes after electronic literature?

We can also question in what sense electronic literature and digital writing practices are a means to an end. If so, what are the ends of electronic literature? What political, ideological, aesthetic, and commercial ends or purposes do works of electronic literature serve?

In recent years, projects such as the ELMCIP Electronic Literature Knowledge Base have sought to highlight the work of scholars and artists who have worked outside of the mainstream of electronic literature as it has developed as a field, for instance developing research collections based on Russian and Brazilian electronic literature. This conference will seek to shed further light on international communities and practices in electronic literature that have not been widely addressed in the critical literature of the field, those that are located at the “ends” or margins of critical discourse in the field.

Electronic literature is situated as an intermedial field of practice, between literature, computation, visual and performance art. The conference will seek to develop a better understanding of electronic literature’s boundaries and relations with other academic disciplines and artistic practices.

As a laboratory for future literary forms, the field of electronic literature must count the youngest readers among its most significant group of end-users. One strand of this conference will focus specifically on digital reading experiences made for children.
