“The Shimmering Museum”

Reflecting
on two decades of curatorial experience presenting exhibitions and permanent
collections in museums, Hileman will discuss the current state of the museum
field, considering the influence of commercial interests and power structures
on programming decisions alongside challenges in securing next generations of
patrons. Her talk will also address ways forward for increasing the social,
political, and affective resonance of museums, as well as non-museum paths for
artists whose aim is to develop a dialogue between their work and the public.
Kristen Hileman is an Independent Curator based in
Baltimore. She served as Head of The Baltimore Museum of Art’s Department of
Contemporary Art from 2009 through 2019, where she oversaw the reinstallation
of the museum’s renovated contemporary wing in 2012, initiated numerous
acquisitions to diversify the collection, and presented exhibitions featuring
an array of artists, among them the Guerrilla Girls, Njideka Akunyili Crosby,
Mary Reid Kelley and Patrick Kelley, Sarah Oppenheimer, Dario Robleto, Anri
Sala, and Tomas Saraceno. Her most recent BMA projects included Meleko Mokgosi: Acts of Resistance, Lizzie
Fitch / Ryan Trecartin, DIS: A Good Crisis and John Waters: Indecent Exposure, a large-scale retrospective of
that influential cultural figure’s visual arts career. Throughout her time at
the BMA, Hileman foreground artists with ties to Baltimore including Seth
Adelsberger, Maren Hassinger, Sharon Hayes, Jimmy Joe Roche, Sterling Ruby, and
Sara VanDerBeek. Jo Smail: Flying with
Remnant Wing, her survey of the career of the distinguished painter and
Maryland Institute College of Art professor, will open at the BMA in spring
2020.
From 2001 through 2009, Hileman worked at the
Smithsonian Institution’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington,
D.C., where she organized the first full career retrospective of Anne Truitt,
bringing new attention to the important DC-based abstractionist. At the Hirshhorn, Hileman also co-curated the international film and video
exhibition The Cinema Effect: Realisms and led projects featuring John
Baldessari, Cai Guo-Qiang, Cyprien Gaillard, Mario Garcia Torres, Oliver
Herring, Jim Hodges, and Wolfgang Tillmans. She has taught at Johns Hopkins
University, George Washington University, and the Corcoran College of Art and
Design and is a frequent visiting critic and lecturer at colleges and
universities.

Visual Arts Professor James Smalls on Race and Art
Seeing Color: conversations with arts leaders at the BMA
The Baltimore Museum of Art presents Seeing Color: A Conversation About Race & Art on Saturday, November 14, 2 PM. The free panel discussion will bring insights to the national conversation on race, identity, and social justice addressed by artists and shed new light on challenging artworks in the BMA’s historic and contemporary collection.
Works such as Charles Calvert and His Slave (1761) by John Hesselius; Uncle Tom and Eva Spill Vase (1852-1853); and Strange Fruit (1995) and Cotton Eater II (2014) by Allison Saar will be discussed.
The panel moderator is Rodney Foxworth, founder of Invested Impact, a non-profit working to support economic change and leadership development in underserved communities. He has advised, developed, and managed numerous social impact ventures.

Associate professor Eric Dyer
was named a 2015 winner of the prestigious $25,000 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize,
and he will present his art works at the Baltimore Museum of Art from September
16, 2015 - November 15, 2015.
IMDA MFA program alumna
Dominique Zeltzman will join Dyer in the exhibition, as one of the recipients
of a $5,000 b-grant .
The Baker Artist Awards were
created to support artists and promote Baltimore as a strong creative
community. Through a sophisticated online portfolio of artists’ work and
significant monetary prizes to award the winners, the Baker Artist Awards
serves artists of all disciplines who live and work in Baltimore City and its
five surrounding counties. The website and awards were established by the
William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund in 2008, and are a program of the Greater
Baltimore Cultural Alliance. The exhibition is generously funded by The William
G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund.

IMDA MFA Program alumna Marian Glebes teams up with BMA
Year long project to build a habitat with The Loading Dock
IMDA MFA Program alumna Marian Glebes, in partnership with the non-profit The Loading Dock, has been selected for a year-long project to be produced for the BMA’s new center for learning and creativity, opening October 25, 2015.
The new center will offer a variety of imaginative art experiences, including a community commons, where Glebes and The Loading Dock will produce artworks onthe theme of ‘home.’
Seeing the BMA as a metaphoric house to Baltimore’s greatest cultural assets, Glebes anticipates creating an interactive environment in which audiences can consider their personal relationships to the materials of home and to the objects of the museum. The project will explore how audiences’ relationships with those materials, and their individual habitats, connect them to the larger notion of place and environment.

Revolution of the Eye makes its debut in New York
Maurice Berger's exhibition opens to accolades
Revolution of the Eye, the first exhibition to explore the relationship between modern art and early American television has made a big splash with its recent opening at The Jewish Museum, NYC. The exhibition is curated by Dr. Maurice Berger, Research Professor and Chief Curator, Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, UMBC, and curator, National Jewish Archive of Broadcasting, the Jewish Museum, New York.
The exhibit has been cited in

Revolution of the Eye was named critic's pick in the
Village Voice,
Time Out New York, and
AM NY, adding to great press coverage in the
New York Times,
Wired Magazine,
The Huffington Post, and
US News.
This stunning Abbott Miller designed exhibition will be on view at the
Jewish Museum through September 27, 2015, and then will embark upon a national tour (through 2017): Nova Southeastern University Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale; The Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA; Center for Art, Design, and Visual Culture, University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago.

Documentary videos by Vin Grabill at the Gugenheim Museum
"Group Zero" seen through the lens of UMBC Art Professor
Three documentary videos produced by Visual Arts Department Chair Vin Grabill will be screened at the Guggenheim Museum in New York as part of the "Zero: Countdown to Tomorrow, 1950s-60s Film Program".
Grabill's videos "Otto Piene's Sky Art", "Otto Piene's Sky Art Neon Rainbow", and "Sky Kiss at Desert Sun/Desert Moon" will be presented by the museum. These artist documentaries provide an expanded look at the ZERO network and the processes that the artists employed.Otto Piene was one of the founding members of Group Zero, "an international network of artists that shared the group's aspiration to redefine and transform art in the aftermath of World War II." Otto became the director of the Center For Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) at MIT and served in that capacity till 1994, and UMBC bestowed an honorary degree on Otto Piene in 1995.

Project Mah Jongg featured on CBS Sunday Morning and Sun
Touring exhibit on Mah Jongg continues to draw attention
CBS Sunday Morning, The Baltimore Sun, and the Baltimore Jewish Times have run features on Project Mah Jongg, now appearing at the Jewish Museum of Maryland and is on view in Baltimore through June 29, 2014..
The show, which originated at the Museum of Jewish Heritage, NYC has also garnered notice in the New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The LA Times. The show has travelled to Portland, Cleveland, LA, Miami Beach, Atlanta, and will continue on to San Francisco this summer.
CIRCA Director Timothy Nohe produced sound designs for three "Muji" players, documenting games in Chinatown and the Upper East Side. The sound work was invited by curator Melissa Martens Yaverbaum. Abbot Miller, a partner at Pentagram Design, designed the exhibit to highlight the intriguing objects and imagery surrounding the game. Original works by fashion icon Isaac Mizrahi, and renowned illustrators Maira Kalman, Christoph Niemann, and Bruce McCall pay homage to the influence mah jongg has had on design and contemporary artists. The exhibition's sumptuous companion publication "Mah Jongg: Crak, Bam, Dot," was edited by Abbott Miller and Patsy Tarr, and published by twice books.
