Critical Language Scholarship Program
Scholarship Application Deadline November 27, 2018
The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century's globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

The Journal of Electronic Publishing has recently released its Special Issue, which includes Dr. Craig Saper's video/presentation "Disrupting Scholarship.":
From the JEP's Special Issue Introduction:
""In “Disrupting Scholarship” Craig Saper explores both alternative forms of publishing and alternative models of academic infrastructure. To his mind, there has been a conservative move in digital humanities, evident in its focus on visualizing, mapping, and charting, all of which work to preserve a fixed notion of the humanities. The question is this: what could the humanities be if it were not engaged in the fixing of meanings? Multimodal scholarship has been an important development in this respect, Saper argues. He is particularly interested in how reading will change to adapt to new forms of multimodal publication and, vice versa, how publishing will respond to such new reading practices. Saper provides examples in the form of his own experiments with publishing books that are precisely about the reading process, and his attempt to set up a university press for multimodal works and community-based scholarship at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. In these experiments, Saper stresses, the publication process itself is to be seen as part of the process of writing. It is thus important to think about knowledge in relationship to the objects of study, where these objects are models for the form of the publication, based on their own sensibility: infrastructure here becomes poetry."

Vega: Digital Publishing Platform For Scholarship

This presentation will highlight a new publishing project in the works: Vega, an academic publishing platform supported by the
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Building on 15 years as editor of
Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy, Dr. Ball will discuss how publishing multimedia scholarship requires different kinds of infrastructure than scholars, editors, and publishers are used to with print-based publishing. Vega incorporates newer publishing processes, such as collaborative authoring, open peer review, and design editing, as well as newer products, such as media-rich articles and data sets.
Ball will talk about the opportunities and challenges of composing, editing, publishing, and evaluating scholarship in the 21st century, primarily when it takes nontraditional, digital forms.
Cheryl E. Ball is Associate Professor of Digital Publishing Studies at West Virginia University. She teaches classes in editing, multimedia authoring, and digital publishing and teaches occasional seminars on academic literacies at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design.

ISLS 2015 Founders' Emergent Scholars Award
Attention recent LLC Graduates!!!
This award is intended to promote critical language scholarship and to recognize and advance the academic work of emergent scholars who have completed their doctoral dissertations within the past five years and are entering into the community of scholars. It honors the efforts of the founding members of the International Society for Language Studies (ISLS) who established the first international society dedicated to critical scholarship in language studies. In particular, it recognizes research that addresses neglected populations, focuses on little-studied research sites, offers new perspectives, and/or uses innovative methods. The award is granted once a year. Previous applicants are welcome to reapply. We encourage all applicants to join the ISLS, but membership is not required for nomination. The winner is expected to become an ISLS member.
The award includes an opportunity for awardees to publish an article in the society’s journal, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies (CILS) or in their Readings in Language Studies book series. Awardees will be recognized at the society?s biennial conference and will have a portion of their travel expenses to the conference covered.
The application deadline is March 1, 2015

Second Generation Scholarship Application
Scholarship Application
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the Second Generation Scholarship Award is to provide support
to outstanding UMBC undergraduates who have demonstrated a commitment to the
advancement of minorities. The amount of the scholarship varies from year to
year.
For the 2013-2014 academic year, two $1,000 scholarship will be given. The
recipients will be notified in early November and the awards will be formally
presented at the W.E.B. Dubois Lecture on November 13, 2013. Attendance
at the lecture is mandatory.
Criteria
The student selected to receive this award should:
- Be a full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking student in good standing at
UMBC.
- Have a minimum 2.75 GPA.
- Submit two letters of recommendation, one of which should be from a UMBC
faculty from whom the applicant has taken a course.
- Have completed or enrolled in an Africana Studies Course.
- Submit a transcript (unofficial transcripts are accepted).
- Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of minorities that is reflected
by a pattern of service to the community, extracurricular activities, or other
community involvement.
