The Mark Rice Collection is comprised of more than 80 photographs constituting part of the history of gay male photography produced after the Stonewall Rebellion of 1969, a significant historical event that fostered the visibility and optimistic development of a gay male subculture during the 1970s and early 1980s. Sadly, that carefree optimism turned to a melancholic introspection with the devastating onslaught of HIV/AIDS from the mid-to-late 1980s through the 1990s. Most of the photographs from the collection date to this latter decade and will be considered in this historical context.

The exhibition is curated James Smalls, Professor of Visual Arts at UMBC. His research and publications focus on the intersections of race, gender, and queer sexuality in modern and contemporary visual culture. He is the author of Homosexuality in Art (2003) and The Homoerotic Photography of Carl Van Vechten (2006). He will be giving a talk as part of the Humanities Forum and related to the exhibition titled “The Mark Rice Collection and the Homo-Erotics of Photography After Stonewall,” on Thursday, December 7 at 4 p.m. in the Library Gallery


Admission to the exhibition, lecture, and reception is free and open to the public.

Gallery hours:
Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday until 8 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday: 12 – 5 p.m

The Baltimore Museum of Art presents Seeing Color: A Conversation About Race & Art on Saturday, November 14, 2 PM. The free panel discussion will bring insights to the national conversation on race, identity, and social justice addressed by artists and shed new light on challenging artworks in the BMA’s historic and contemporary collection. 

Works such as Charles Calvert and His Slave (1761) by John Hesselius; Uncle Tom and Eva Spill Vase (1852-1853); and Strange Fruit (1995) and Cotton Eater II (2014) by Allison Saar will be discussed.

The panel moderator is Rodney Foxworth, founder of Invested Impact, a non-profit working to support economic change and leadership development in underserved communities. He has advised, developed, and managed numerous social impact ventures.
