    <div class="html-content">September 21 marks the moon-viewing festival across many parts of Asia. Where Americans see "the man in the moon," Asian cultures instead see a rabbit! The moon-viewing festival celebrates the mid-autumn harvest with evening picnics and the sharing of various sweet treats with family and friends. Will you be exchanging mooncakes or maybe trying your hand at <a href="https://omnivorescookbook.com/snow-skin-mooncake-custard/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">making your own</a> this month?<div><br></div>
    <h5>Free Korean Online Classes with K-Buddy</h5>
    <p>K-Street is once again hosting its popular online, free Korean language-learning classes this semester! A variety of options are available, ranging from a Hangul masterclass to sessions focused on K-pop dances and Korean cooking. Learn more and sign up at <a href="http://iyf-kbuddy.com" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">K-Buddy's website</a>. </p>
    <h5>Virtual On-Demand Film Screening: "The Vow from Hiroshima"</h5>
    <p>Together with the Department of History and the Department of Language, Literacy, and Culture, Asian Studies will host an on-demand virtual film screening of "The Vow from Hiroshima," a documentary which tells the story of a survivor of the Hiroshima bombings and her lifelong quest to abolish nuclear weapons. The film will be available on-demand <strong>September 14-21</strong>. On Sept 21, a virtual presentation will take place - more information about this presentation, and how to sign up for the on-demand film screening, will be available soon. </p>
    <h5>ASIANetwork Student Opportunities</h5>
    <p>ASIANetwork has announced three opportunities for undergraduate students, with deadlines throughout the fall semester: </p>
    <ul>
    <li>
    <strong><a href="https://m.asianetwork.org/student-video-challenge" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Student Video Challenge</a> (Interest App Due Oct 15)</strong><br>Students at an ASIANetwork school will work with students at Asian universities to produce a video presentation. </li>
    <li>
    <a href="https://m.asianetwork.org/programs/mcjimsey-award" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">McJimsey Student Paper Competition</a><strong> (Submit by January 15, 2022)</strong><br>Undergraduates and 2021 graduates are invited to submit their work on Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia, or the Asian Diaspora to this competition. The winner will receive a $200 cash prize and their essay will be published in ASIANetwork's journal. The winner and runners-up will also be invited to present their work at ASIANetwork's annual conference (April 8-10, 2022, Geneva, NY).</li>
    <li>
    <strong><a href="https://m.asianetwork.org/conferences/2022-annual-conference" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Call for Poster Presentations</a> (Submit by November 1, 2021)</strong><br>Students (individuals or groups of 2-4) may submit proposals for poster presentations to be given at ASIANetwork's annual conference (April 8-10, 2022, Geneva, NY). Details and additional information are available at the link above. </li>
    </ul>
    <h5>UMBC Review Open for Submissions</h5>
    <p>The UMBC review is <a href="https://ur.umbc.edu/umbc-review/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">now accepting submissions</a> for its 23rd edition (April 2022)! Undergraduates, or recent graduates who completed their work during their undergraduate career, from any discipline are welcome to submit their work for consideration. <strong>Submission deadline: Sept 17</strong></p>

    <h5>Gilman Scholarship Applications Open<br>
    </h5>
    <p>Interested in study abroad? The Benjamin A. Gilman Foundation awards up to $8,000 to support students pursuing study abroad opportunities. The deadline to apply is <strong>October 5</strong>!     <h5>Shirt Design Contest</h5>
    <p>The Asian Studies program celebrates its 10th anniversary this academic year, and we're marking the occasion with a shirt design contest! The contest is open to all UMBC students; the top three designs, as chosen by our celebrity judge Dr. Jacob (Associate Dean, CAHSS, and ASIA affiliate faculty), will win fabulous prizes, and the first-place design will become our new shirt! See the attached flier for more information. The deadline to submit your entry is <strong>Sunday, Sept 26</strong>. </p>
    <h5>Asian Studies Welcome Week Reception - Sept 2</h5>
    <p>Join us for our 2021 Welcome Week Reception this Thursday, in the Fine Arts Amphitheatre and Recital Hall Lobby! We'll have sushi, drinks, snacks, and other giveaways.     <div class="html-content">Summer is winding down, and in a few weeks, campus will once again be buzzing with activity as classes begin and students return. We look forward to seeing you!<div><br></div>
    <div><strong>Welcome Week Reception</strong></div>
    <p>Save the date for our Welcome Week Reception, <em>Thursday, September 2, from 12:30-1:30pm</em>. Stop by for snacks, music, or just to say hello! If you're new, you'll have a chance to learn more about the Asian Studies program. If you're a returning student, we look forward to catching up with you! Keep an eye out for the myUMBC event notice soon!</p>
    <div><strong>Late Course Addition: ANTH/ASIA 214: Focused Cultural Study - South Asia</strong></div>
    <div>Still looking for a class for this fall? We're excited to offer ANTH/ASIA 214, which will use ethnographic accounts from throughout South Asia to develop an anthropological understanding of historic and contemporary South Asian cultures. It is a hybrid course meeting in the evenings on Mondays and Wednesdays - more information is available in the online course catalog. </div>
