AI learning seminars from UMBC Training Centers Free for UMBC faculty and staff!

UMBC Training Centers offers a series of half-day online workshops and sessions on AI topics, available to anyone through a paid yearly subscription. In partnership with DoIT, these workshops are being made available without cost to UMBC faculty and staff for the remainder of 2025.

 You can find more information on the available four-hour online workshops and their upcoming scheduled dates by clicking on the links below. Additional topics may be added in the future.

 You can register for any of the upcoming sessions by sending an email message to Deshawn Delice (ddelice1@umbc.edu) with your name, role (i.e., faculty or staff), and the sessions and their dates that you would like to register for.

CARAT, the CAHSS Creative Achievement & Research Administration Team, invites CAHSS faculty to join us for a virtual research development mini consultation on Tuesday, July 29. CARAT’s Research Development team will be available to discuss your research/creative achievement project ideas and brainstorm potential sponsors.

You can make an appointment for a virtual mini consultation (15 minutes, one person per slot) during two time blocks: 
Block One: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (meeting slots at 11:00 – 11:15; 11:15 – 11:30; 11:30 – 11:45; 11:45 – 12:00)
Block Two: 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (meeting slots at 2:00 – 2:15; 2:15 – 2:30; 2:30 – 2:45; 2:45 – 3:00)

In June 2025, the North American Association of Sports Economists (NAASE) announced the establishment of the Coates-Humphreys NAASE Distinguished Research Award, named for UMBC Department of Economics's Dennis Coates and West Virginia University’s Dr. Brad Humphreys. 


Dr. Coates and Dr. Humphreys are the award’s inaugural winners.


The creation of the award honors Dr. Coates’s scholarship in sports economics, including serving as a founding member and President of NAASE and an extensive list of published papers and books. In 2022, he won the NAASE Larry Hadley Service Award which honors outstanding and unusual contributions and service to NAASE and the field of sports economics.

This announcement is for those UMBC PIs who conduct Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) research and previously submitted IRB protocol application(s) through the broad management of University of Maryland College Park. 


The following message, shared by Joe Smith (Director of UMCP's Human Research Protection Program) is regarding SoTL protocols that are already/currently housed under UMD's IRB. Such IRB protocols will need to migrate back to UMBC's IRB within the next year. As of December 2024, all new SoTL IRB applications must be filed through UMBC's IRB and Kuali Protocols system. 


"The SoTL Broad Protocol with USM has been recently approved for one additional year with an expiration date of 7/15/2026.  The SoTL Broad Protocol will not be renewed beyond 7/14/2026.  

The UMD IRB is transitioning to a new electronic submission system that is not conducive to the current SoTL Broad Protocol process.  Please see below for important notes & dates about continuing your project:

1) If your project will be completed prior to 7/15/26, there is no action that you need to take.  

2) If your project will continue beyond 7/15/26, you must submit your project through your home institution's IRB well in advance of 7/15/26 in order to avoid expiration and closure of your SoTL project.

3) If you need to submit an Amendment to your SoTL project, it must be submitted prior to 12/1/25.  The UMD IRB will not be accepting changes to SoTL projects beyond 12/1/25.  

4) If you need to make changes to your SoTL project after 12/1/25, that would be the time to transfer your SoTL project to your home institution's IRB Office.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is dramatically reducing its vital support for scientific research. Principal Investigators who were conducting or facilitating economic research under a grant terminated by NSF can now apply for rescue funds to mitigate disruptions of work that promises to provide societal benefits.

Application Deadline:
Rolling; funds are limited - grantseekers should apply as soon as possible

Award Size:
Grants will range from $25K to $250K, with most awards under $50K


To apply for rescue funds, PIs of terminated grants are asked to submit a narrative letter describing the social value of the work that is being disrupted, including why the project is important for the United States and, if applicable, the world. The SSRC will convene a Public Review Panel to evaluate submissions. Panel members are expected to include consumers of economic information, including former state and local officials, high school teachers, journalists, and business leaders. The panel will evaluate the proposals, and make funding recommendations based on the perceived value of the research and the impact of the rescue funds.

 

To be eligible for rescue funding, a research project must:

·        Have received an NSF funding award prior to 6/1/2025  

·        Have had that award officially terminated, cancelled, or suspended by the NSF  

·        Be economics-related, as evidenced by the inclusion of the CV of at least one practicing PhD economist in the original NSF funding application

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) — the university committee that reviews, approves, and monitors research involving human participants — is currently accepting volunteer applications from faculty, staff, and students to join the committee.

The IRB regularly rotates its membership to ensure representation across departments and areas of expertise. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the integrity of UMBC’s research enterprise while gaining valuable experience in research ethics and compliance.

What IRB Members Do:

  • Review research proposals and consent documents
  • Evaluate ethical, scientific, and regulatory aspects of studies
  • Assess risk levels and ensure compliance with federal regulations
  • Recommend improvements to protocols and IRB procedures
  • Attend and participate in IRB meetings and deliberations

Time Commitment:

  • Faculty/Staff: 3-year renewable term
  • Students: 1-year renewable term
  • The IRB meets five times per academic year (October, December, February, April, and June)
  • Meetings are held on Mondays from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
