Call for Papers and Presentation Proposals
Storytelling has been defined as ‘the artform of social interaction,’ not only for its inner dynamics, but also for its power to unlock grass-roots knowledge, explore dilemmas, develop community resilience, engender change.
Stories can generate empathy and trust in the audience and at the same time demonstrate their usefulness because they have the power to give meaning to human behaviors and to trigger emotions.
We are interested in proposals that will explore issues related to (but not limited to) the following sub-themes:
- [Past] Unwanted legacies and key learning to carry forward: difficult pasts; traumatic transitions; post-conflict scenarios; lessons learned from our histories; place-based learning and research; reflective learning.
- [Present] Urgent story work: climate change; health; migration; social justice; education and action; deindustrialization, development, gentrification and displacement.
- [Future] Speculative futures: building communities; crossing boundaries; human/animal and human/landscape relations; new forms of conversation; new digital environments, platforms and applications; storytelling for evaluation; curation; dissemination and storyteller safety.

We are pleased to announce the go live kickoff of KUALI Protocols for UMBC, our cloud-based electronic research administration tool. After several positive and successful tests, UMBC’s KUALI for IACUC Protocol submissions has an official start date of September 6th 2019.
What does this mean for you?
- KUALI will be your one-stop shop for both Proposals and Protocols.
- Our website has also changed. Online (paper) forms will now be a thing of the past and we will only accept IACUC protocol submissions via a link to access your KUALI Protocol.
- Have a current IACUC protocol in progress? Please upload your current protocol into KUALI before annual reviews or protocol amendments are approved. The staff in ORPC are ready to assist you.
How can I get KUALI Protocol Training?
The KUALI website will provide you with links to training documents in case you have any questions. If you need additional training our office will be happy to meet with you one-on-one to discuss your questions. Or feel free to send us an email to compliance@umbc.edu.

Invitation to Apply to Be a Student Member of the IRB
Appointment will be for the 2019-2020 Academic Year
The
Institutional Review Board (IRB), the formally designated UMBC committee to
approve, monitor, and review research involving humans is currently accepting
applications from students to join.
Graduate and undergraduate students are considered full members of the
board. Student members serve for a one (1) appointment and review research
protocols, attend meetings, and vote on issues with the aim to protect the
rights and welfare of the research subjects. Appointments begin in October
2019. The board typically meets 5 times during the academic year: October,
December, February, April and June. Meetings are on Mondays from 10 am-12 pm.
This is a
terrific opportunity to learn about ethical issues related to research. Also,
being a member of the IRB looks good on a curriculum vitae or resume. Please
contact Dr. Susan Sonnenschein, IRB Chair, (sonnensc@umbc.edu)
no later than September 20, 2019 if you wish to apply. Your email should
include a copy of your curriculum vitae or resume and a few sentences
describing your research interests and experience. We are particularly
interested in people who have had research experience with human participants.

The American Sociological Association (ASA) encourages applications for the Community Action Research Initiative (CARI) grants. CARI grants are for projects that bring social science knowledge and methods to bear in addressing community-based problems. Applicants must be sociologists seeking to work with community organizations or community action initiatives.
Applications are encouraged from sociologists working in a variety of work settings including academic institutions, research institutes, private and non-profit organizations, and government agencies. Graduate students are eligible to apply, but CARI funds cannot be used to support dissertation research. While ASA membership is not a criterion for applying, it is required to receive a grant. All ASA members are obligated to follow the ASA Code of Ethics, and grantees must provide pertinent IRB approval if necessary. Grants are for up to $3,000 of direct costs.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is announcing the opening of its 2020-2021 Fellowship competition. The Center awards approximately 15 academic year residential fellowships to academics, journalists, former public officials, and independent experts from any country with outstanding project proposals on global issues. The Center welcomes policy-relevant proposals which complement the Center’s programming priorities. Within this framework, the Wilson Center supports projects that intersect with contemporary policy issues and provide the historical and/or cultural context for some of today’s significant public policy debates. Applicants must hold a doctorate or have equivalent professional experience. Fellows are provided stipends (which include round trip travel), private windowed offices, Library of Congress access, and part-time research assistants.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development offers grants to implement and provide housing and trauma-informed, victim-centered services for victims of human trafficking.

Check Your Wristband(WebMD) The Center for Social Science Scholarship hosts “Tea & Theory,” a monthly seminar-style workshop where we discuss social science theory. All faculty and advanced graduate students are welcome!
The purpose of the workshop is to promote intellectual exchange among the social science community at UMBC. This interdisciplinary workshop is designed to encourage reading across disciplines as well as provide an opportunity to practice debate & critique skills.
Fall workshops are dedicated to reading and discussing the “Classics” of social science theory, while Spring workshops focus on “New Takes on Classics” (works generally published in the last 5 years).
Workshops will be held on the first Wednesday of the month in PUP 451 from 2-3:30pm, unless otherwise noted. No need to sign up, just show up! Tea will be provided but please BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug).

KUALI Protocols Go Live Update
We are pleased to announce the successful go live kickoff of
KUALI Protocols for UMBC, our cloud-based
electronic research administration tool. After several positive and successful
tests UMBC’s KUALI for protocol submissions has an official start date of August 15th 2019.
What this means for you: online forms will now be a thing of
the past and we will only accept IACUC protocol submissions through KUALI. From
now on KUALI will be your one stop shop for sponsored Program’s and now
Compliance.
For our current IACUC protocol users you will need to upload
your current protocol into KUALI before any yearly reviews can be approved so
please upload them ASAP.
Our Website will also be changing. We will no longer offer
forms for Protocol submission but will instead provide you the link to access
your KUALI protocol. Also, on our website we will provide you with links to
training documents in case you have any questions. If you need additional
training our office will be happy to meet with you one on one to discuss your
questions in person or feel free to send us an email.
We also hope to launch KUALI for IRB soon so stay tuned for
more information

Enforcement Procedure of Three Day Proposal Submission

Re: Clarification and Enforcement of existing Proposal Submission Deadlines and Procedures
Effective August 2019, the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) in the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) will explicitly abide by existing procedures for proposal submission deadlines. Under this procedure, a fully completed proposal and all attachments must be sent to OSP in a “ready-to- submit” state no later than three (3) UMBC business days prior to the sponsor deadline in order to be submitted to the sponsor.
At the beginning of each day, OSP will review proposals in Kuali due to the sponsor over the next three days, and if a proposal is found not to be in “ready to submit” condition, OSP will contact the PI and appropriate institutional officials with a reminder.
Any proposals not received in a “ready-to-submit” condition by 9:00 am on the due date to the sponsor will not be submitted by OSP and will be returned to the PI and the institutional unit. In addition, OSP will inform the appropriate Associate Dean for Research or respective official of any such returns.
OSP serves as the authorized office to submit all proposals for extramural support of research, scholarship or creative achievement on behalf of UMBC. The grants and contracts experts in OSP are responsible for verifying that the contractual and budgetary components for every proposal meet sponsor solicitation requirements and institutional guidelines. These solicitation guidelines are unique for each proposal and can vary significantly among sponsors from public, private, or foundation sectors.
OSP plays a critical role in the proposal submission process. Rapidly advancing technologies and increasing competition for limited funding resources often lead sponsors to identify non-compliance up front. Sponsors might refuse to review proposals for (sometimes minor) administrative omissions. It is discouraging to all of us when a proposal is not accepted or is returned for non-technical reasons (e.g., page length, font size, margins, or missing documents), but, more importantly, it tarnishes the professional reputation of the PI and reflects poorly upon the entire UMBC research community and collaborative partners.
What is a “ready-to-submit” proposal?
A complete, “ready-to-submit” proposal is one that has been routed for signatures via Kuali and has been fully approved based on the prior submission of the key information required for review, including details on institutional commitments (i.e. space, time, and effort) and budget. The
“ready-to-submit” proposal must also include a final title and executive summary as well as the complete and final versions of all the necessary forms and documents. That is, the PI should have all the documents ready for OSP to submit the proposal to the sponsor. In addition, if the
proposal is to be submitted via an electronic submission system (i.e. Fastlane, Research.gov, Grants OnLine, NSPIRES, Grants.gov, etc.) all documents must be uploaded to the system and OSP must have been given “submit” access via Kuali, or any other appropriate electronic submission system.
What support will be provided to the Principal Investigators?
The OVPR, in coordination with the Colleges, Schools, and the Research and Creative Achievement Council, has held and will continue to hold outreach and education sessions to enhance all PIs’ awareness of these requirements.
OSP will initiate the three-day reminders on August 1, 2019 and will implement the 9:00 am return procedure on September 1, 2019.
The OVPR recommends that PIs consult with their unit’s research administration and with OSP about their proposals as early as possible. This is especially necessary when pursuing complex and multiple PI- led proposals. We consider the preparation and submission of these proposals as a team effort where we share a common goal – submitting a successful, winning proposal as effectively and efficiently as possible.
