Are you interested in supporting ethical research at UMBC? 

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) — the university committee that reviews, approves, and monitors research involving human participants — is currently accepting volunteer applications from faculty, staff, and students to join the committee.

The IRB regularly rotates its membership to ensure representation across departments and areas of expertise. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the integrity of UMBC’s research enterprise while gaining valuable experience in research ethics and compliance.

What IRB Members Do:

  • Review research proposals and consent documents
  • Evaluate ethical, scientific, and regulatory aspects of studies
  • Assess risk levels and ensure compliance with federal regulations
  • Recommend improvements to protocols and IRB procedures
  • Attend and participate in IRB meetings and deliberations

Time Commitment:

  • Faculty/Staff: 3-year renewable term
  • Students: 1-year renewable term
  • The IRB meets five times per academic year (October, December, February, April, and June)
  • Meetings are held on Mondays from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Students spend much of their day sitting in classrooms, and the comfort, placement, and size of those seats has a real affect on how we learn. Join Dr. Kate Drabinski and students from her spring activism class for a presentation and discussion about campus furniture, accessibility, and what it takes to make our classrooms accessible for all.

Bio:
Dr. Kate Drabinski is Teaching Professor in GWST and Director of the Humanities Scholars Program. She teaches a spring course on activism, and this presentation highlights student work aimed at making UMBC better. She is joined by students Gab Dungan, Taz Stone, and Nicole Shif.

The DMV area’s unique blend of Central American and Caribbean migrations is often overlooked in favor of larger places like New York and Los Angeles. Not anymore! Join Dr. Tania Lizarazo, Dr. Thania Muñoz, Dr. Yolanda Valencia, and Dr. María Célleri, co-leads of UMBC's Latin American Feminisms Faculty Working Group, to learn more about their Abya Yala Project, a community-engaged multi-step and mixed-media project that will name, archive, and highlight the efforts and varied lived experiences of the Latine/x community in the larger DMV region. Designed as an interactive website, it will feature contributions from students, faculty, artists, and community members, emphasizing the diversity of Latinx/e experiences beyond traditional migration hubs. This website will center these communities’ voices through various mediums, such as academic essays, creative writing, stories, art, and multimedia.This interactive website will serve as their first step towards creating the Abya Yala Center at UMBC in the years to come. 

Bio:
The co-leads of the Latin American Feminisms Faculty Working Group are Dr. Tania Lizarazo (MLLI), Dr. Thania Muñoz (MLLI), Dr. Yolanda Valencia (GES), and Dr. María Célleri (GWST), and the project is sponsored through the Dresher Center for the Humanities and the CAHSS Dean’s Office.

Faculty seeking external funding for research and creative achievement projects in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences should contact Rachel Brubaker, CARAT Associate Director for Research Development. Consult with your department chair or program director before beginning any funding application. External grant and fellowship applications must be routed for university approval in either UMBC's Kuali system or through the CAHSS internal routing form before submission. Plan additional time (5-7 business days) for routing.

CARAT (Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team) assists CAHSS faculty with research development and pre- and post-award services. CARAT offers a range of support activities for faculty seeking extramural funding, including drop-in sessions, individual consultations, workshops, and co-sponsored sessions. Check our website and myUMBC group for upcoming activities.

To request a consultation or to begin a proposal, visit our pre-award assistance webpage (you must be logged-in to myUMBC to complete CARAT request forms). The lead time for fellowship proposal development is 2-3 business weeks, and at minimum 4 business weeks for grant proposal development. CARAT reserves the right to decline proposal requests that do not include adequate lead time.

PI Eligibility: UMBC uses Kuali, a cloud-based research administration tool, for proposals and awards. UMBC faculty identified as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator on any proposal or award must first obtain PI eligibility in order to develop proposals and receive awards at UMBC. This includes faculty with appointments after August 1, 2012, as well as faculty who have not previously applied for external funding. The process involves completing the Principal Investigator Research Administration Training and Education (PIRATE) in Blackboard and a PI Eligibility request form via DocuSign. PI applicants must also obtain PeopleSoft Finance and PAW Access.

Faculty seeking external funding for research and creative achievement projects in the Humanities and Humanistic Social Sciences should contact Rachel Brubaker, CARAT Associate Director for Research Development. Consult with your department chair or program director before beginning any funding application. External grant and fellowship applications must be routed for university approval in either UMBC's Kuali system or through the CAHSS internal routing form before submission. Plan additional time (5-7 business days) for routing.

CARAT (Creative Achievement and Research Administration Team) assists CAHSS faculty with research development and pre- and post-award services. CARAT offers a range of support activities for faculty seeking extramural funding, including drop-in sessions, individual consultations, workshops, and co-sponsored sessions. Check our website and myUMBC group for upcoming activities.

To request a consultation or to begin a proposal, visit our pre-award assistance webpage (you must be logged-in to myUMBC to complete CARAT request forms). The lead time for fellowship proposal development is 2-3 business weeks, and at minimum 4 business weeks for grant proposal development. CARAT reserves the right to decline proposal requests that do not include adequate lead time.

PI Eligibility: UMBC uses Kuali, a cloud-based research administration tool, for proposals and awards. UMBC faculty identified as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator on any proposal or award must first obtain PI eligibility in order to develop proposals and receive awards at UMBC. This includes faculty with appointments after August 1, 2012, as well as faculty who have not previously applied for external funding. The process involves completing the Principal Investigator Research Administration Training and Education (PIRATE) in Blackboard and a PI Eligibility request form via DocuSign. PI applicants must also obtain PeopleSoft Finance and PAW Access.
