    <div>Dear Research Community Members,</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Our
friend and colleague Joanna Napoli will be retiring from UMBC on
March 31, 2025. Joanna joined the UMBC team on November 20, 2000 as an
Accountant in the Office of Contract and Grant Accounting (OCGA). She
has received multiple promotions and has led the department as the
Director of OCGA since July 6, 2021.  </div>
    <span><div><br></div>
    <div>Joanna
has served with distinction and will be leaving a lasting impact on our
UMBC community. She has worked tirelessly to support the Research and
Create Achievement effort here at UMBC. Some of her notable achievements
include the publication and maintenance of the Post-Award Sponsored
Projects Guide, as well as the development and delivery of the
comprehensive Sponsored Post Award Training. She led the paperless
initiative which was completed just prior to 2020 and enabled us to
achieve the mission goals of OCGA uninterrupted during the COVID 19
pandemic. Joanna was also instrumental in our efforts to capture
institutional research dollars more effectively for reporting on the
HERD survey. Joanna has mentored many members of our campus community,
starting with our OCGA team in Financial Services. Her leadership and
guidance has maintained the integrity and timeliness of our financial
process during a time of unprecedented growth in UMBC's history.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Please
join the festivities as we thank Joanna for her many contributions to our Research
Community and celebrate and wish her our best in this new chapter of her
     life.</div>

    <div><span><h3><span>Overall Series Description:</span></h3>
<p><span>The </span><span>Building Bridges Across Difference: A Dialogue for Every Day </span><span>series
equips faculty, staff, and students with practical tools to foster
connection and understanding across differences in today’s polarized
climate. Grounded in the Center for Social Justice Dialogue's commitment
to shared power and inclusive practices, this series provides
strategies to build trust, navigate challenging and emotionally charged
moments, and create environments that encourage community and mutual
respect. By embracing intergroup dialogue practices daily, participants
will enhance their ability to inspire critical self-reflection, cultural
storytelling, generous listening, and loving accountability.</span></p>
    <p>Both sessions take place from <strong>11:30am - 1:30pm</strong> and will be held in <strong>ITE 237</strong>. <strong>Bring your own lunch!</strong></p>
    <p>If you have accessibility needs, please email <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csjd/posts/147764/13ba5/0889be43a4e4de22a153beb6fa9db87e/web/link?link=mailto%3Acsjdialogue%40umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">csjdialogue@umbc.edu</a>.</p>

    <h3><span>Session Descriptions:</span></h3>
<p><span>1. Exploring Your Role in Social Change • 3/25</span></p>
    <p><span><strong>RSVP</strong></span><span>: <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csjd/posts/147764/13ba5/35d04650c0aaf349d0450efe5c8effb6/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fmy3.my.umbc.edu%2Fgroups%2Fcsjd%2Fevents%2F140997" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csjd/events/140997</a><br></span><span><span>This
session focuses on identifying entry points into social change and
allyship work. Participants will explore tools and practices that help
them “see” themselves as part of a larger ecosystem of social change.
Protests, voting, and other more obvious forms of advocacy are great,
but they are not the only way. This session will help participants link
their existing skills and passions to a wide array of practices and
approaches to social change and allyship.</span></span></p>
    <p><span>2. </span><span>Loving Accountability: Practicing Grace and Forgiveness • 4/29</span></p>
    <p><span><strong>RSVP</strong></span><span>: <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csjd/posts/147764/13ba5/b115f245caf18120a163260394667ec4/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fmy3.my.umbc.edu%2Fgroups%2Fcsjd%2Fevents%2F140998" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csjd/events/140998</a><br></span><span><span>In
this session, participants will explore loving accountability, a
competency for dialogic community building, which is about centering
humanity and prioritizing relationships as we call in and redress harm.
This session will emphasize the importance of grace and forgiveness in
the accountability process, drawing on the work of Kazu Haga and other
works rooted in Kingian nonviolence. Participants will have the
opportunity to practice tools connected to loving accountability like
calling in harm and offering apologies.</span></span></p>

    <p><em><strong>This
series is open for full participation by all individuals regardless of
race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or any other protected
category under applicable federal law, state law, and the University's <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/csjd/posts/147764/13ba5/aed0d2a98b8ba8c09accf7cb8b96ca51/web/link?link=https%3A%2F%2Fecr.umbc.edu%2Fdiscrimination-policy%2F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">nondiscrimination policy</a>.</strong></em></p></span></div>

<p>As federal funding policies continue to evolve, institutions managing
service centers must proactively adapt to potential reductions in
research funding and shifting cost recovery limitations. </p>
    <p>This session
explores the financial and operational complexities of service center
management, focusing on advanced cost analysis, rate setting strategies,
external user pricing, and compliance with federal guidelines. With
ongoing discussions surrounding limitations on indirect cost
recovery—such as the recently proposed 15% cap at NIH—institutions face
increased pressure to maximize cost recovery while ensuring compliance. </p>
<p>This session will examine strategies for optimizing service center
operations, developing sustainable financial models, and leveraging
alternative revenue sources. Through real-world case studies and
interactive discussions, participants will learn how to align their
service center structures with institutional priorities while navigating
federal cost principles, financial sustainability, and external audit
    expectations.</p>
    <h5>Learning Objectives</h5>
<p>Join us for this informative session, where we will:</p>
    <ul>
<li>Analyze cost structures and rate-setting methodologies to ensure
financial sustainability while maintaining compliance with federal
    guidelines.</li>
<li>Explore strategies for mitigating the impact of potential reductions in federal research funding on service center operations.</li>
<li>Discuss best practices for maximizing cost recovery, including external user pricing and appropriate subsidy allocations.</li>
<li>Identify key considerations for aligning service center financial management with evolving federal funding priorities.</li>
    </ul>
<p>This session is ideal for research administrators, financial
managers, and institutional leaders responsible for overseeing service
center operations and research support facilities. Attendees should have
a working knowledge of service center cost recovery principles and
    federal funding regulations.</p>
