"UMBC Suits You" is collecting new and gently used professional clothing as part of Career Crush in April.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about dressing professionally and will then be able to select one free outfit to use in their job search. We are asking staff to donate new and gently used professional clothing at collection bins around campus from February 22nd - March 9th.

Starting February 22nd, Professional Clothing can be dropped off at the following on-campus locations:

Items that will NOT be accepted: jewelry, handbags, shoes, and general accessories.

Clothing donations will be used to benefit UMBC students and will not be considered as gift-in-kind or donation to UMBC. Clothing donations are not eligible for a tax-deductible receipt. Any leftover clothing will be donated to local non-profits, Suited to Succeed and the Franciscan Center’s Attire 4 Hire program.

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Schneider Electric

Position Title: Sales Intern 

Major(s)/Minor(s): Chemical Engineering

Briefly describe your internship, co-op,  or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I interned at Critical Systems by Schneider Electric.The work I did there involved manufacturing control panels for building automation systems,HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, and security and monitoring systems. During my internship, I made many panels for a large contract with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as well as smaller jobs for the Carol County Courthouse and office complexes in Washington, D.C.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I got really lucky. I had no idea about this internship opportunity until an employee, who my father knew, mentioned that there were some openings for summer internships. After I found out, I immediately submitted my resume and was soon contacted for a phone interview. I was actually in the middle of my UMBC orientation when I got a call back, saying that I got the job.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Critical Systems has a very friendly office environment. A lot of the other interns and employees are UMBC alumni, so I felt at home pretty quickly. They treat interns like actual employees, and my duties consisted of actual involvement and contribution to real engineering projects. I was involved with manufacturing, but there were plenty of other opportunities. Some interns did estimating, while others did actual designing of the panels.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

With Maryland weather being so unpredictable, the HVAC panels I have made are going to be making quite an impact for the residents of numerous office buildings. When it's a humid 98 degrees or dry 15 degrees and they walk into a building that's a moderate 70 degrees, they'll know who to thank.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

If an opportunity presents itself, don't put it off. Keep your resume updated and be ready to send it out at a moment's notice. Also be sure to document the work you do and the experiences you have at your internships, you can use them later when applying for jobs.

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: University of Nebraska-Lincoln Minority Health Disparities REU

Position Title: UNL SRP Scholar

Major(s)/Minor(s): Psychology, Gender and Women's Studies

Briefly describe your internship, co-op,  or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

The Summer Research Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has given me the opportunity to work on my own independent research project for the summer with my mentor, Dr. David DiLillo. At the start of the summer I took a seminar-style class on Exploratory Social Network Analysis for two weeks, and for the remaining eight weeks I worked with my mentor to apply this methodology to my field of psychology. My final project used this new methodology to explore relationships between clusters of risk factors for sexual victimization. At the end of my experience I will have presented my research at the UNL research symposium. Aside from my own research, I had the opportunity to work closely with several graduate students on their own ongoing studies, some of my tasks included data coding, data cleaning, and attending lab meetings.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I started my search for a summer research experience on the research page on myUMBC. From there I started an extensive internet search and compiled a list of about 20 programs that I could apply to. The materials I needed in my application included a resume, personal statement, and unofficial transcript. I used the career services center to help me review my resume, and I recruited a professor in my field to help me draft a personal statement. There was no interview required for the program at UNL, but several other programs on my list did require a phone interview.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I have really enjoyed the opportunity to work independently and really get involved in the research process. I want to pursue a career in research, so this was really a good taste of what that is really all about. Also, the program did a lot of preparation for graduate school, which makes the daunting process of applying seem more attainable! 

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Sexual assault is an epidemic in the United States. My research was about understanding the relationships between symptoms of sexual victimization. Understanding these relationship can have serious impacts on treatment and intervention for survivors. The relationship that I found has stirred discussion about more thorough research in the lab in the future, which will help women and men who have survived various forms of sexual assault get the help that they need.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Start early! Don't be intimidated, all types of students can get these experiences.
