The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship
Innovation and Social Change prepares UMBC students for the rigors and
rewards of entrepreneurship and social innovation. This program places
highly-motivated students from diverse backgrounds in mentored
internships to better prepare them to launch nonprofit or social
ventures. Students get training and experience to empower them to become
the next generation of social entrepreneurs–working largely in the
not-for-profit world, developing and delivering innovative solutions to
some of our region’s most urgent social problems.
Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on
average, 8 to 10 hours per week. Students receive a stipend of $1,500
toward their compensation. In addition to the internship, students
engage in projects and activities that further expose them to the social
entrepreneurial mindset.

The UMBC Career Center is seeking an executive student assistant who can work as an integral part of the Recruitment and Technology Team to support the team's core responsibilities. Congratulations! In a little more than a week, you’ll have finished another semester. Whether or not everything went to plan, you deserve to feel proud. With summer right around the corner, be sure to take some time to relax, but also use some of that time to work on your career preparedness. Using a couple of hours here and there to get ready for the fall can set you up for resounding success.
I have already talked a lot about what you can do this summer if you don’t have a job in your preferred field (you can see that post here). If you do have a job or internship, make sure you review the Career Center’s Impressing on the Job guide to make sure you put your best foot forward. Our new service Big Interview also has a guide for your first 90 days at a job. Work hard and spend your time wisely, and you will have a ton to put on your resume by the time August rolls around.
Speaking of resumes, this is a great time to update yours! Look at our resume resources online for ideas on how to add projects and classes you completed this semester to your resume, or come into the Career Center for one-on-one help. Graduating seniors, you can still use our services! Finally, take a little time to make some professional plans for the fall. My two suggestions: find an on-campus job (you can see my post about available positions here) and make a list of the positions you’d like to apply to for next summer. I know it seems crazy to be thinking about next summer’s internships and jobs when it isn’t even this summer yet, but a lot of companies open and close applications much earlier than you think, and being the first to apply is always a good look!

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
I am conducting research at Towson University in the Devadas Lab. My research consists of synthesizing and characterizing gold nano-clusters which can be used for energy responsive applications such as light harvesting and theranostic applications with specific aims: (i) to enhance light collection efficiency using quantum sized clusters, (ii) to develop better labelling agents with enhanced two-photon cross-sections, and (iii) to generate efficient nano-vehicles for targeted drug delivery. My day-to-day responsibilities include synthesizing the gold nano-clusters, and purifying the products before characterizing them with UV-VIS Spectroscopy.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I was able to obtain this research position because my brother attends Towson University and has been apart of the research group since the spring semester. He was the one who told me about the opportunity to work in the lab for the summer and told his research mentor about me. I then scheduled a meeting with Dr. Devadas and she allowed me to join her lab for the summer.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
What I have enjoyed most about my position is the fact that I am learning something new everyday. I am a biology major working in an inorganic chemistry lab so I didn't understand a lot of the things I had to do in the beginning. However, after performing my day-to-day responsibilities and reading research articles, I have gained a strong understanding of the reasoning behind my research. It has been very enjoyable to go through this process and I look forward to continuing to learn throughout the summer.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe that I have brought in my hardworking character and my love for learning to my research lab. I hope that my biggest impact I make through my work is that I accomplish all the tasks I have been assigned for the summer and fulfill what has been asked of me to the best of my ability.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Don't be afraid to ask for internship or research opportunities! The easiest way to get involved is to simply ask a professor or faculty member if they are looking for an intern.

The end of the semester is three weeks away. I don’t know about you guys, but the closer we get to finals week, the more narrow my vision gets. I forget about everything except finishing that last project and making another flashcard set. So before that mania really takes hold, it’s important to know what you’re doing for the summer. And if you’re someone who does not have a summer internship in your field, this is not the time to panic. Your summer can still be very productive and helpful, even if you don’t have an official position. So let's take a few minutes now a make a plan for your summer so that after finals week, you can take a bit of a breather then hit the ground running.
Your first goal should be to build skills. There are a lot of options in this area. You can take summer classes through UMBC, find massive open online courses (a lot of these are free!), or even begin preparing for the classes you’ll take next semester. Even something like watching youtube tutorials about a topic you’re interested in can be helpful. Focus on expanding or deepening your skills in a few areas of your major this summer. You’d be surprised how far that can go.
Next, build experience. “But Emily”, you might say, “the whole reason I’m reading this article is because I don’t have an internship or job coming up! How am I supposed to build experience?” Well, never fear. Experience comes in many shapes. If you want to build professional experience, consider finding a regular summer job. It might not be your first choice, but even jobs way outside of your major can be helpful in the future. They help develop professional skills and cultivate references. If you want to build experience in your field, consider working on personal projects and freelancing. Not only do these look great on your resume, but they can also help you build relevant skills to your major and interpersonal skills that you’ll use for the rest of your life.
Finally, consider volunteering. Charities and nonprofits need your time, and the work can be fulfilling and rewarding. There are even options in your major! Be sure to talk to the Shriver Center for more details, or coordinate through a local nonprofit. Volunteering is a great way to fill a few hours and round out your resume, all while helping people.
So there you have it. How to spend your summer without an internship. I personally suggest dividing your time in a 2:3:1 ratio between skills, experience, and volunteering respectively. So if you want to dedicate around 20 hours a week to productivity, spend 6 of them building skills, 10 of them gaining experience, and 3 of them volunteering. You’ll finish your summer strong and ready to take on whatever comes next with a killer resume in your corner!
