Achieving Retriever Gold: The purpose of this workshop is to inform students what it means to be on Academic Warning/Probation, understand challenges and barriers to academic success, and identify campus resources to support with getting off of probation.  Also, students will learn tangible skills for calculating their GPA and what grades are needed to return to positive academic standing.

1.) The last day of schedule adjustment (i.e. last day to add/drop/swap your classes) is this upcoming Friday, February 11th. Make sure that you are happy with your classes, that you are FULLY registered for a minimum of 12 credits (if you need to be a full-time student), and that you have established a balanced plan for the semester. Feel free to check in with your assigned advisor if you have any questions/concerns. First semester students can follow up with CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.

2.) The last day to apply for Spring 2022 graduation is February 15th. Eligible students can find more information about this process HERE.

3.) The Summer 2022 schedule is LIVE and registration will begin on March 1st. Advising clearance is not needed for summer course registration, however you will want to discuss your plans with your advisor during the next few months.

4.) Take some time to update your record! Check your myUMBC account to determine your declared major(s). If your record does not accurately reflect your plans you can submit an updated Declaration of Major Form HERE. When completing the form, be sure to declare/ADD your new major intentions as well as remove/DELETE any unwanted programs.

Grades released today: some things to keep in mind Greetings, CNMS students!

This is a friendly reminder to check your grades today! This is important for a number of reasons:

-If you are on academic probation, your grades will determine whether you stay on probation or go up for suspension, although you will not be notified of this until January 10, when transcripts are updated. 

-While your individual grades will be posted today, your transcript with cumulative GPA will not be updated until January 10! If you need your cumulative GPA to fill out internship applications or want to know whether you will be on academic probation, you can calculate your GPA using this handy tool: https://gpacalculator.net/college-gpa-calculator/

-Have you earned your prerequsites AND the grades you need in those prerequisites to continue? Many STEM courses require you to earn a C or better in prerequisites! If you did not earn a C or better, you should think about repeating a course. Planning to go to medical school, for instance? You will need a C or better in chemistry!

-Use your grades from the fall to reflect on a balanced schedule and think about any changes you might want to make in the spring semester.

CNMS Advising is excited to welcome students back to campus and to officially kick off the Fall 2021 semester!

Our office will be holding both in-person and online appointments throughout the schedule adjustment period (until September 14th).

During this time -- and to comply with social distancing restrictions -- walk-in advising appointments will NOT be permitted however we will be offering same day appointment opportunities.

All advising sessions can be scheduled via our online appointment calendar here. As a reminder -- however -- CNMS Advising support is reserved for new/incoming students as well as those returning students who are assigned to Christine Powers, Julie Crosby, or Kandace Racine.

If you are a continuing student who has already been assigned to a faculty advisor you will need to contact them directly in order to schedule an appointment. A complete list of all advising assignments for returning students can be found here alongside a faculty key/contact information.

Advisors will be adhering to university social distancing and health/safety strategies. Please come to your meeting prepared with any materials (laptops, smartphones, etc.) that may be needed.

New/Incoming students can revisit this year's Welcome Week Toolkit here for a refresher on some of the ways to utilize advising and campus resources in order to ensure a successful semester.

The First-Generation Workgroup & Off-Campus Student Services Office are kicking off the 2021 First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program (FGPMP).

FGPMP is designed to support the success of current first-time and full-time first-generation students at UMBC. At UMBC, first-generation students are defined as "a student who is the first in their immediate family to attend college". Students that take part in this program can expect to meet other first-generation students and become a part of a large, supportive community that works to share resources, find lasting friendships and connections, and create an impactful college experience. Please be aware that in order to be a mentor, you must have completed at least one year as a student at UMBC and mentees must be within their first year at UMBC.

Participants of the FGPMP will also have the opportunity to take part in a series of activities and workshops designed to enrich students both personally and professionally. 

Some additional benefits of taking part in the FGPMP include:

  • Developing transferable and marketable skills to enhance professional experience

  • Cultivation of leadership, self-management, and organizational skills

  • Improved communication and interpersonal skills

  • Greater self-efficacy and self-awareness

  • An increased network of support

Registration for Spring 2021 is just around the corner which means that you will want to plan to meet with your assigned major advisor ASAP in order to discuss your academic plan and receive advising clearance. 

Keep in mind that advising is MANDATORY every semester and must be completed prior to registration for the upcoming school term.

Advisor assignments can also be found via the CNMS Advising website here (by major). 

Newly or recently declared life science majors who do not have a listed advisor assignment should contact CNMSAdvising@umbc.edu for support.

The 3rd Annual Major Event is coming up on Wednesday, October 21st!

This year's virtual event will consist of four separate programs throughout the day. Students are welcome to attend as many programs as they'd like! Pre-Registration, along with information on each program, is now available on our Major Event website. **You can also use our website to access the event on the day of, if you choose not to pre-register.**

Students who attend any of our programs will be eligible to earn a free Major Event t-shirt and sticker (both of which will be mailed directly to your home after the event)!
