Quite a Life

Elinora Bowdoin Bolton, who was a member of UMBC's original graduating class in 1970, passed away last week. She was 93. Her Baltimore Sun obituary suggests that she was born into great privilege. She lived much of her life at a time when women faced significant obstacles to transcending traditional roles. But her obituary hints that Mrs. Bolton was an independent spirit who was able to hone and apply her many talents.

Some highlights of her life:

Born in Baltimore, she moved to Paris after her parents' divorce and her mother's remarriage.

Around her 19th birthday, she was presented as a debutante before King George VI and his wife at the Court of St. James.

After her mother died when she was about 20, she moved back to Baltimore and began working in the Johns Hopkins Hospital emergency room.

In her early 20s, her prowess as a tennis player got her photographed for the Baltimore Sun's sports section.

In her mid-20s she married an Army Air Corps captain while he was on a 3-day leave from World War II. The couple lived in an old farmhouse in Elkridge and had 10 children.

Once her youngest child entered school, she applied to UMBC to pursue her bachelor's degree in French.

At 52, she graduated alongside her second son.

After earning a master's degree from the University of Maryland, College Park at age 54, she taught French language and literature at UMBC, College Park and Catholic University.

She was a docent at Walters Art Museum and led French-speaking tours.

Elinora Bowdoin Bolton's story has me thinking about my own life, and about what it means to make the most of one's opportunities. We all grow up immersed in a world of expectations about our roles and appropriate paths. I don't know for certain that she experienced any part of her life as a struggle against such conventions, but I'd like to think that Mrs. Bolton's mid-life decision to earn bachelor's and master's degrees represented a triumph of self-awareness and free will. That's a victory worth seeking at any age.
That's where I met most of my best friends during my freshmen and sophomore years. So Welcome Week brings back good memories for me. I enjoy Big Crazy Fun Night, the RESPECT talk by Maura Cullen, and Convocation the most! I absolutely loved Commuter Retreat when I was a commuter freshmen year and highly recommend it. Welcome Week is a great way to meet new people and start the school year on a good note.

A: I sometimes feel like I'm a nomad! I'm a part of all these different organizations, some of them on very different planes but that is what I enjoy about my roles the most. At the end of the day, I realize just how lucky I am to have the opportunity to work with such diverse groups of people. Being able to transition from one mindset to another is a very interesting challenge and I love it. It keeps me on my toes and I'm never left bored or feeling tired. I love how I can work for Pre-Med during free hour, go to class, then head straight to a Splash! meeting, and finish the day off with a 2 hour orchestra rehearsal. I love the adrenaline rush I get from running all around campus keeping myself busy!

A: Don't be afraid to leave the comfort of your safety zone and try new things. I'm actually guilty of always staying within my safety net but I've learned to let go sometimes and just try things for the heck of it and not care about how silly I may look. Everyone always says this and I feel like it's become a cliche but college is definitely all about discovery. The way I think of it is you'll never really know what kind of person you are until you open up and put yourself in the spotlight.

Whenever you see tour groups on campus or know that it's orientation day, head on over to True Grits. Let's just say that on those days, the chefs go by the golden rule of "The way to a student's heart is through their stomach."

Hidden Talents

There's just no non-creepy way to call a stranger by name and explain, "I recognize you from photos you've been tagged in on Facebook." I make this mistake once in a while (most recently last week at Involvement Fest) and I always regret the words as soon as I say them. But I'm especially prone to falling into this trap, because I have a hidden talent: I'm extraordinarily good at recognizing faces--even over time and across media--and connecting them with names I've seen in print. If I've ever read your Wikipedia page and you walk into the restaurant where I'm eating dinner, I'm very likely to spot you and know your name. Hopefully I'll have the wisdom not to tell you so!

It took me a long time to discover this talent, partly because it lay outside the realm of my courses and exams. I never had the chance to get an "A" in face-spotting. I believe all of us are walking around with these hidden abilities, which make us more interesting people and contribute to the strength and diversity of our community. We'd make a fine band of superheroes, if we could ever get organized around our invisible abilities. So let's get started: What's your hidden talent?

A: There are so many ways to be involved on campus, and I enjoy constantly finding new opportunities to do so. I feel incredibly privileged to be able to have an influence and voice in campus life, whether through SGA or other student organizations. Joining my fraternity, I have acquired an amazing extension to my family. The idea of leaving a lasting impact in UMBC really motivates me. Furthermore, the fact that activities exist that I am very passionate about enhances my college experience. Sports clubs are an example of this. Last, but not least, meeting new people of different backgrounds and perspectives is extremely refreshing. The community we have here at UMBC is one we should be proud of.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: It's been said before, but I will say it again: Make UMBC yours. One major lesson I have learned at UMBC is to recognize new experiences and not to be afraid to try something unfamiliar. There is always something to gain by stretching yourself to new levels and horizons. I consider college to be a keystone period in life where your character develops. Making the most of my time here as a student is important; I would be denying myself a lot of personal growth and understanding without that realization. There is always room for some responsible risk.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Exploration! Whether it is exploring your passions or the world for new knowledge, being human to me means cultivating oneself, striving to become better -- to be constantly in motion. In particular, I like learning new things about science (being a Biology major and all), exploring nature, traveling, and indulging my creative side, such as drawing or cooking.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: A couple weeks ago I happened to meet one of the first graduating classes of UMBC, who worked as a librarian in one of my local branches. We talked about the university and how it used to be, and see in contrast where it stands now. I was impressed to find out that she was in the original designing team of The Commons. It re-conveyed to me the significance of being a part of the UMBC community.

Also, the Fireside lounge is pretty sweet.

A: What I could simply say is that I really enjoy planning and working fun and friendly events... However, there are two things I enjoy the most. Every Tuesday morning, we have Good Morning Commuters (GMC) where we serve breakfast on Main Street for anyone who has a Gold Card (from commuters and residents to staff/faculty!) We play music, talk, eat, and try to brighten up everyone's Tuesday morning! I just love the atmosphere that's created by not only the GMC team but also the people who attend! It's so relaxing and kind of cute!

In addition to GMC, on one Friday every month, we have Commuter Connections. My coworker, Josie and I organize interesting, informative, playful, exciting, thoughtful, and enjoyable activities with a focus on commuters getting more connected with campus and the community. Planning and preparing for our events can sometimes get stressful, but with a little help here and there, with the collaboration of an awesome team, and with student participation, an event can be described as successful! My favorite part is at the end of the event after clean up when I go back to the office and I get the feeling of accomplishment. I basically love my job :)!

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: The most important thing I've learned is that you should be open minded and always be willing to meet new people. You might make new friends, or you might meet your future business partners. Don't stop there... go talk to your professors, or go to info sessions and meet some employers. A new person might open the door to so many other possibilities that you could have or maybe to experiences you otherwise would not have. You should keep an open mind and just learn from the people who are surrounding you! It opens up opportunities for you and allows you to see what is going on in the world around you. Plus, its fun most of the time!

Lessons from a Snowball to the Face

When I was 6 or 7 years old, my family spent a weekend at Big Bear Lake, about 120 miles from our home in suburban Los Angeles. It was the middle of winter, and the trip was one of one of those we warm climate-dwellers would describe as "going to the snow." My aunt and uncle's family made the trip as well, and I spent a lot of time with my cousins playing in all that strange, cold, white stuff on the ground.

At one point my uncle playfully threw a snowball at me, not realizing it contained a chunk of ice. The blow split my lip, and I started to bleed, and to cry like crazy. As we trudged back to our lodge for some disinfectant and a bandage, my uncle said, "David, I'm very impressed with how you're handling this. If it were [his daughter, my cousin], she'd be doing a lot more yelling and crying."

I stopped crying instantly, and my mind began to turn over the idea that I could show bravery by holding back my tears, and that this was (apparently) a good thing.

Obviously I wasn't the only male child being taught that lesson, and my uncle's undoubtedly well-meaning comment was far from its only source in my life. My later tendency as a young adult to suppress negative emotions, which led to bouts of anxiety and depression, could hardly be traced back to one grown-up's encouraging remark on a snow-covered mountain.

But over the years, when I've occasionally replayed the scene in my mind, I've reflected on the power of positive feedback from an authoritative source. To the extent that I was already brave, I wanted only to be more so. And to the extent that I suspected I was not brave at all, and experienced my uncle's remark as an undeserved compliment, I wanted only to avoid the humiliation of failing to live up to his expectation.

In my role at UMBC I'm in a position to provide encouraging feedback a lot, and the snowball incident contributes to the sense of responsibility I feel whenever I do. I want to help people recognize what is most favorable and true about themselves. But I never want to distort their sense of themselves, or make them feel beholden to me, by suggesting that they need to fulfill my expectation about their reactions and behavior.
