<Title>Students partner with Baltimore community members to measure &#8216;forever chemicals&#8217; in local waters</Title>

    <p>On a sunny and unseasonably warm Halloween this past fall, a group of costumed UMBC students strolled the banks of the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. The costumes were in good fun, but the spirit driving them to the city that day was more scientific than spectral: They were there to check on samplers they had installed around the harbor to measure the concentrations of certain chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in the water. </p>

    <p>PFAS are used in a diverse range of products, including cleaning products, clothing, and fire-fighting foam, and have earned the nickname “forever chemicals” because of the way they persist in the environment. There are growing concerns about the health effects of the chemicals, and in recent years there have been efforts to <a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-industry-actions-end-sales-pfas-used-us-food-packaging#:~:text=Today%2C%20the%20U.S.%20Food%20and,like%20fast%2Dfood%20wrappers%2C%20microwave" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">eliminate PFAS from some consumer products</a> and <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/biden-harris-administration-finalizes-first-ever-national-drinking-water-standard" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">regulate their concentration in drinking water</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The UMBC students’ work to measure PFAS in Baltimore Harbor is one of the first projects aiming to get an understanding of how much of the chemicals are found in the waters around Baltimore and where they might be coming from. <strong>Margaret Siao</strong>, a master’s student in chemical engineering, took a lead role in the work as part of the <a href="https://icare.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ICARE program</a>, which links researchers and Baltimore community members on environmental projects around the city.</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Donya Hamidi</strong>, an environmental engineering Ph.D. student, also took part in the project, which served as a test case for a larger project she is working on, seeking to expand the utility of innovative passive samplers to measure PFAS in any water source. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I’ve lived in Baltimore most of my life,” says Siao. “The harbor is a big part of the city, although many people don’t go out on the water. And that’s one of the reasons I wanted to look at the water quality.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>PFAS are everywhere</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>There are thousands of different PFAS chemicals. Because of their widespread use and resistance to degradation, they are found throughout the country in the water, soil, air, and food, and in the blood of humans and animals. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Exposure to some forms of PFAS has been linked to a range of health problems, including decreased fertility in women, developmental effects in children, reduced immune function, and increased risk of cancer and obesity. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The PFAS issue just gets more and more complicated by the day,” says <strong>Lee Blaney</strong>, the environmental engineering professor who leads the lab where Siao and Hamidi work. He notes the EPA recently released <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-releases-draft-risk-assessment-advance-scientific-understanding-pfoa-and-pfos" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">an initial risk assessment</a> for certain PFAS found in biosolids, which are a byproduct of wastewater treatment and are sometimes applied to agricultural land as fertilizer. “It’s a big, far-reaching issue.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Partnering with the community</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Blaney is an expert on PFAS, and as concerns about the prevalence and potential health effects of the chemicals have grown, his lab has been a leading partner with Baltimore community members who advocate for and are responsible for the quality of the water.</p>

    <p>Siao’s ICARE project was a partnership with the <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/centers/md-de-dc-water/science" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">United States Geological Survey Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Water Science Center</a> and <a href="https://bluewaterbaltimore.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Blue Water Baltimore</a>, a non-profit organization with the mission to restore the quality of Baltimore’s rivers, streams, and harbor. Blue Water Baltimore shared their knowledge of the harbor and area waterways and their connections with the community, while lab members shared their expertise and will share their PFAS data once it has been analyzed.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“PFAS is a hot topic, so Margaret’s project is really good timing,” says Barbara Johnson, who was Siao’s mentor at Blue Water Baltimore. “I think her data will be very useful for us in helping the public understand what PFAS are, for example just understanding how many different kinds there are. Margaret has taught me so much about PFAS.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>As part of the field work, Siao and Hamidi also sampled water at the outlet of the Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant in Baltimore. That partnership arose when Mohammed Almafrachi, who works as an engineer for the Baltimore City Department of Public Works, became interested in the PFAS issue and sought out a local expert.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Last year, I found Dr. Blaney’s name on the internet. I drove to the campus, found his office, and he was there. I introduced myself as an engineer at the city of Baltimore, and we sat down and started talking,” Almafrachi says. From that conversation grew not only the collaboration to measure PFAS at the wastewater treatment plant, but also a tour of Baltimore’s largest drinking water treatment plant that Almafrachi gave students in Blaney’s class on environmental physicochemical processes last spring. Almafrachi said he was happy to provide students with a window on a real-world workplace where their skills might one day be applied.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“If you have not gone to the field, then you are not yet a full engineer,” says Almafrachi. “We can talk about theories and textbooks endlessly, but the field is where you really test your skills.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>The value of field work</strong></h4>

    <p>Siao and Hamidi agree with Almafrachi about the value of field work. They installed their PFAS samplers at three of the four trash wheels around Baltimore Harbor—personified contraptions named Mr. Trash Wheel, Professor Trash Wheel, and Gwynnda the Good Wheel of the West that collect floating trash and keep it from dirtying the harbor. To get to the trash wheels, they took a flat-bottomed wooden boat, “more like a floating platform with a little cabin,” Siao says. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Almost every time we collected a sampler, we saw something new or unexpected, for example algae growing on the sampler, and we had to figure out what was going on at that particular site,” says Hamidi. The team’s work and the measurements they collected and are currently analyzing will serve as a foundation for future studies about PFAS in the local environment.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Both Hamidi and Siao say they valued the teamwork of their trips, and the chance to meet people in the community impacted by their research.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“If you are stuck in a lab all day, it’s easy to forget why you’re doing research,” says Siao. “This project gave me a chance to interact with people outside of academia, to learn about what’s important to them, and to learn how to communicate about science with them, which is a really important skill.”</p>

<Title>UMBC team leads research into AI tools that can assess the feasibility of scientific claims</Title>

    <p>A multidisciplinary team of UMBC researchers was recently awarded $3.8 million from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop new computational methods for assessing the feasibility of scientific claims. The project is motivated by the speed and volume of new developments in science and the need for tools to help evaluate the soundness of new claims.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Some scientific claims are peer reviewed by independent experts, but others, such as from company press releases, or papers posted to pre-prints sites, are not,” says <strong><a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/frank-ferraro/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Frank Ferraro</a></strong>, an associate professor of computer science and lead researcher on the award. And even when science is peer-reviewed, there can still be errors, Ferraro notes. For example, recent research highlighting the danger of flame retardant chemicals leaching from black plastic into food was widely reported on, before it was discovered that <a href="https://arstechnica.com/health/2024/12/huge-math-error-corrected-in-black-plastic-study-authors-say-it-doesnt-matter/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">an error in the paper</a> led to a significant overstating of the exposure risk. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>An AI science assistant </strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>The idea of an AI assistant specifically designed to tackle complex research questions has been catching on recently. OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, recently debuted their “<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-00377-9" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">DeepResearch</a>” tool, which the company says can use reasoning to synthesize large amounts of online information and complete multi-step research tasks.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Ferraro says the tool he and his colleagues hope to develop should stand-out from other approaches by employing a strongly iterative process, necessary to really take apart and analyze claims. The tool will break down a scientific claim into constituent sub-claims, and apply a wide range of evidence and reasoning approaches to assess the feasibility of each one. </p>

    <p>The team, which includes UMBC faculty <strong><a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/tejas-gokhale/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Tejas Gokhale</a></strong>, computer science and electrical engineering, and <strong><a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/josephson/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Tyler Josephson</a>,</strong> chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering, as well as colleagues from Stony Brook University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Cambridge, will develop and test the tool on three leading areas of scientific research: materials science, AI, and quantum computing.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It’s a little meta that the AI will be analyzing AI,” Ferraro says. More than 20 UMBC undergrads, grad students, and post-docs will take part in the project. “They’ll get opportunities to network with peers on a highly relevant topic,” Ferraro says. “They’ll be helping guide the national conversation on these issues.”</p>

<Title>Students celebrate Engineering and Computing Week with fun and networking</Title>

    <p>Where can UMBC engineering and computing students mingle with friends and mentors over sweet treats, test their knowledge and design skills in friendly competition, and network with potential employers? If it’s February, the answer is the annual Engineering and Computing Week, a traditional celebration of technology, held each year at UMBC to coincide with <a href="https://www.nspe.org/connect/partners/engineers-week" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Engineers Week</a>. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The UMBC chapter of the engineering honors society Tau Beta Pi, in collaboration with various student engineering organizations on campus, organizes the week of activities each year. This year, the line-up of events featured a mix of social activities, such as painting and crafting, presentations from student organizations, and chances for teams to compete in games testing engineering knowledge and design skills.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC chapters of the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/issa" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Information Systems Security Association</a>, the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/umbcaiche" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">American Institute of Chemical Engineers</a>, the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/asme" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">American Society of Mechanical Engineers</a>, the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/swe" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Society of Women Engineers</a>, <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/ewb-umbc" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Engineers without Borders</a>, and the<a href="https://www2.umbc.edu/ieee/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers</a> all helped organize sessions. <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/umbccd" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC CyberDawgs</a>, a group of UMBC students who share a common interest in cybersecurity, also participated. </p>

    <p>Students could also join faculty, staff, and alumni from the College of Engineering and Information Technology at an evening reception at the Guinness Brewery near UMBC to socialize and network.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I think the biggest success from the week was the great turnout and engagement we got from the students,” says <strong>August Phelps</strong>, a mechanical engineering senior and vice president of the UMBC chapter of Tau Beta Pi.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>He says the event showcases the wide variety of engineering-focused student organizations at UMBC, which hold events throughout the year and offer great opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and form lasting connections with their peers. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I hope attendees left feeling more connected as a community,” he says.</p>

<Title>UMBC delegates build international connections at prestigious science and technology conference in India</Title>

    <p>A six-person UMBC team built international connections at the “PIWOT – World of Technology” conference, held in late January in Mumbai, India. The conference is organized by the alumni association for graduates of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and attracts many of the leaders in science and technology in India and around the world. The CEO of Alphabet, Inc. (Google’s parent company), the co-founder of Sun Microsystems, and the CEO of IBM are all graduates of IITs. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC was represented at the conference by <strong>Anupam Joshi</strong>, acting dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology; <strong>Upal Ghosh</strong>, professor in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering; <strong>Ramana Vinjamuri</strong>, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and director of the <a href="http://nsfbrain.org" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NSF IUCRC BRAIN Center</a>; <strong>Govind Rao</strong>, director of the <a href="https://cast.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Advanced Sensor Technology</a> and professor in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering; <strong>Karuna Pande Joshi</strong>, professor in the Department of Information Systems and director of the <a href="http://carta.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NSF IUCRC Center for Accelerated Real Time Analytics</a>; and <strong>David Di Maria</strong>, senior international officer and associate vice provost for international education at UMBC. </p>

    <p>The UMBC team staffed a well-trafficked booth in the Expo Hall. As an extension of the meeting, they also visited IITs at Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Tirupati, and met with the directors of these institutions to discuss institutional agreements and lay the groundwork for international faculty and student exchanges. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>This year’s PIWOT conference focused on the impact of technology across multiple dimensions of life, from the professional to the personal. Dean Joshi took part as a speaker on a panel about the impact of technology on education. The UMBC booth also displayed the<a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/low-cost-infant-incubator-developed-at-umbc-completes-successful-clinical-trial-in-india/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> low-cost infant incubator</a> developed by Professor Govind Rao.</p>

<Title>Carla Guarraia, Ph.D. &#8217;06, receives Presidential Award for Teaching</Title>

    <p><strong>Carla Guarraia</strong>, Ph.D. ’06, molecular and cellular biology, has received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching for her work at the <a href="https://parkschool.net/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Park School</a> in Baltimore. Only one award is given per state per year, and Maryland is an extremely competitive region.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>In 2017, Guarraia proposed and coordinated a complete redesign of the science curriculum for ninth and 10th graders at Park in close collaboration with colleagues. The new ninth grade course, first implemented in 2019, integrates physics, engineering, and computer science content, and the 10th grade course brings together concepts from biology, chemistry, and data analysis. In addition to covering content, the courses emphasize skill-building and opportunities for memorable and authentic project-based experiences that inspire excitement about science. Park juniors and seniors are then prepared to pursue an array of electives in all five disciplines and interdisciplinary topics.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>An external evaluator lauded the resulting curriculum, which Park calls its “Core Program,” for its alignment with the <a href="https://www.nextgenscience.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Next Generation Science Standards</a>, differentiated learning approach for students with a range of needs, emphasis on mastery learning and a growth mindset, prioritization of active learning, and the faculty’s commitment to caring for their students. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4>Expanding her view</h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Guarraia, who as of the 2024 – 2025 school year is the upper school science department chair at Park,  studied for her Ph.D. under the mentorship of <a href="https://biology.umbc.edu/directory/faculty/person/BS78123/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Philip Farabaugh</strong></a>, professor of biological sciences. Then she completed a postdoctoral fellowship with <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/jennie-leach/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Jennie Leach</strong></a>, associate professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Phil Farabaugh supported my growth as an academic, and as a citizen of the world. He consistently showed respect for me and built up my confidence that I could be smart and fun while not only teaching science but caring for the people around me. As a mentor for life, I have learned from Phil that if I am my authentic self my life will be most successful,” Guarraia says.  </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Leach “shares my passion for teaching, and in Jennie I continue to have a role model for pursuing ambitious exciting science while also being a working mom,” Guarraia adds. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“UMBC is a really special place that shaped my view of Baltimore, as the campus focus was on rigorous education, inclusion, and excellence, and it was my first experience with a truly international community,” Guarraia says. “I am forever grateful for how UMBC, Jennie, and Phil expanded my view of the world and of myself.”</p>

<Title>UMBC students excel at annual meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers</Title>

    <p>UMBC chemical engineering students excelled again at the <a href="https://www.aiche.org/conferences/aiche-annual-meeting/2024" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">annual meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers</a> (AIChE), held in San Diego this fall. The UMBC ChemE Jeopardy team, led by senior chemical engineering student <strong>Colin Jones</strong>, claimed third place at the national competition held during the conference; the K – 12 STEM outreach team, led by senior chemical engineering student <strong>Jemma Pryzbocki</strong>, won the top judges’ award in the high school category for designing a module to teach concepts of heat exchange; and the UMBC AIChE club won a best student chapter award.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The UMBC ChemE car team, which designed a car that starts and stops by chemical reactions, also performed respectably in a competitive field. The team was led by senior chemical engineering student <strong>Ben Welling</strong>. Several students also received individual recognitions—senior chemical engineering and biochemistry student <strong>Pavan Umashankar</strong> won a <a href="https://www.aiche.org/community/awards/donald-f-mildred-topp-othmer-scholarship-awards" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Donald F. &amp; Mildred Topp Othmer Scholarship Award</a> and senior <strong>Meredith Morse</strong>, chemical engineering, took third place in the student poster session in the food, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology division.</p>

    <p>“The students deserve a big round of applause for all their dedication and hard work,” says <strong>Neha Raikar</strong>, a senior lecturer in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) and one of the advisors to the student AIChE chapter. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The chemical engineering major demands exceptional attention to detail and hard work,” says <strong>Mariajosé Castellanos</strong>, another CBEE faculty who advises the AIChE chapter. “It is truly inspiring to see our students consistently apply their skills and make a lasting mark on the national stage!”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC students have achieved impressive AIChE conference success for many years running. The ChemE Jeopardy team has reached the final every year since 2020, and the K – 12 STEM outreach team, which only began competing last year, has won awards at each event. Earlier this year, the UMBC student chapter showed off their growth and talents by <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-chemical-engineering-club-shines-as-student-conference-hosts/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">hosting a regional meeting of AIChE</a> for the first time.</p>

<Title>Retrievers are upping their research game in the 2024-25 Fulbright U.S. Student Program cohort</Title>

    <p>At the height of COVID-19, <strong>Nicole Attram</strong> developed severe lower back pain which impeded her mobility and flexibility. While physical therapy helped mitigate the symptoms, the cause is still unknown. That experience determined the course of her career. After graduating from UMBC in 2023, Attram, mechanical engineering, received a 2024 – 2025 Fulbright U.S. Student award to study in Milan, Italy, in a master’s program in international healthcare management, economics, and policy specializing in pharmaceuticals and medical technology at the <a href="https://www.sdabocconi.it/en/specialized-master-full-time-executive/mihmep" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SDA Bocconi School of Management</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“This experience has inspired my interest in orthopedic biomechanics, particularly prosthetics, and exoskeletons, to help restore autonomy to individuals with lifelong mobility challenges,” shares Attram on her <a href="https://www.nicoleattram.com/about" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">website</a>. “I aim to conduct research at the intersection of systemic racism, healthcare policy, and orthopedic biomechanics to offer holistic care and assistive technology to underserved communities.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Each year, more than 10,000 students apply to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program with just over 2,000 selected from hundreds of colleges and universities across the U.S. In the last decade, <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/tag/fulbright/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC students and alumni have received</a> more than 85 Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for research and teaching placements in <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-mentors-support-a-record-number-of-fulbright-student-award-semifinalists/#:~:text=Being%20capable%20of%20big%20things" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Africa</a>, <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/a-journey-of-growth-retriever-fulbright/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Asia and the Pacific</a>, the <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-2022-fulbright-student-scholars/#:~:text=do%20it%20too.%E2%80%9D-,Intercultural%20understanding%20in%20medicine,-Maryam%20Elhabashy%20%E2%80%9921" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Middle East</a>, <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-2022-fulbright-student-scholars/#:~:text=Latine%20teachers%20needed" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">South America</a>, and <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/after-covid-halted-global-travel-umbcs-newest-fulbright-scholars-begin-their-journeys/#:~:text=Answering%20big%20questions" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Europe</a>.     <h4>Advancing global research</h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Attram is among eight recent graduates and alumni in UMBC’s 2024 – 2025 Fulbright U.S. Student Program class who are sharing their knowledge and building community around the world by earning a master’s degree, conducting research, or teaching English. This year is especially significant, as six of eight awards are research-focused, marking the highest number of research awards in UMBC’s Fulbright history. Students seeking research awards must develop a proposal in coordination with potential advisers in the universities and laboratories where they want to study as part of their application. Graduate degree awards require submitting both Fulbright and graduate school applications.</p>

<Title>Upal Ghosh appointed to D.C. mayor&#8217;s Leadership Council for a Cleaner Anacostia River</Title>

    <p>On September 12, UMBC’s <strong><a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/upal-ghosh/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Upal Ghosh</a></strong>, from the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering, was sworn in as a member of the Washington, D.C., mayor’s Leadership Council for a Cleaner Anacostia River (LCCAR). The council consists of 25 high-level government officials, community leaders, and environmental experts who support the vision of a swimmable and fishable Anacostia River. The members meet quarterly to advise the D.C. government on ongoing restoration projects. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The Anacostia River, which runs from Prince George’s County in Maryland into Washington, D.C., before joining the Potomac River and ultimately flowing into the Chesapeake Bay, has historically suffered from high levels of industrial pollution and contamination from sewage overflow. In recent years, government officials have been making concerted efforts to clean up the river. UMBC was invited to sit on the council, with Ghosh as the representative, based on the university’s key contributions to these clean-up efforts. </p>

    <p>Since 2016, Ghosh and his UMBC colleagues and students have developed innovative methods of measuring contaminants in the river and created models to elucidate where the contaminants come from and how they travel through and accumulate in the water, sediment, and aquatic life, such as fish. <strong><a href="https://imet.usmd.edu/directory/nathalie-lombard" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Nathalie Lombard</a></strong>, a research assistant professor at UMBC who has played a significant role in the projects, will serve as the alternate representative on the LLCAR when Ghosh cannot attend. </p>
    
    
    
    <p><br>In addition to his work on the Anacostia, Ghosh and his students have studied and contributed to the cleanup of the <a href="https://factor.niehs.nih.gov/2024/9/feature/4-feature-innovative-environmental-remediation" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">waterways throughout Maryland, Delaware, and across the country</a>.  “Students learn a lot from being out in the field,” Ghosh says. “They learn how the science and engineering we do helps guide major decisions. Our ultimate goal is making a positive difference in the health of the river, lake, or bay. That gives me a lot of excitement, and it really motivates the students too.”</p>

<Title>Lee Blaney assumes presidency of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors</Title>

    <p>Professor <strong>Lee Blaney</strong>, in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering, formally assumed the role of president of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (AEESP) at a board of directors meeting in early September.</p>

    <p>AEESP is a nonprofit organization founded in 1963 to foster inclusive connections between environmental engineering and science researchers and educators. It provides programs for members to develop the academic networks and career skills needed for professional success, increase equitable societal impact of environmental engineering and science scholarship and creative expression, and reimagine the skills necessary for environmental engineers and scientists to provide solutions that benefit regional, national, and global communities. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The association currently has more than 1000 members from universities around the world. AEESP assists its members in improving education and research programs, encourages graduate education, and provides information to government agencies and the public. The biennial AEESP Research and Education Conference brings the field together to share research, teaching, and outreach outcomes. Blaney’s term as president will include the next conference, which is scheduled to occur in May 2025 at Duke University. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“We’re excited about Dr. Blaney’s new role as president of AEESP,” says <strong>Mark Marten</strong>, the chair of the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering. “His deep involvement with this organization not only makes a positive impact in our discipline, but also raises awareness of our department and UMBC in this influential community.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Blaney and his research group study environmental contaminants of emerging concern, <a href="https://umbc.edu/quick-posts/lee-blaney-wins-funding-to-develop-new-ways-to-remove-forever-chemicals-from-water/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances</a>, or PFAS, which are sometimes called “forever chemicals” because of the way they persist in the environment. They also research how to recover vital resources, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, from waste streams to improve water quality and ensure sustainable development. Blaney was a winner of the <a href="https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.estlett.0c00904?utm_source=SendGrid_ealert&amp;utm_medium=ealert&amp;utm_campaign=TOC_estlcu_v7_i12&amp;ref=SendGrid_ealert_TOC_estlcu_v7_i12_" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2021 James J. Morgan Early Career Award</a> from the American Chemical Society, and has also been recognized for the quality of his <a href="https://facultystaffawards.umbc.edu/umbc-presidential-faculty-staff-awards-2022/2020-2023-presidential-teaching-professor/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">teaching</a> and <a href="https://facultystaffawards.umbc.edu/lee-blaney/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mentorship</a>.</p>

    <p>Blaney joined AEESP in 2012 after starting as an assistant professor at UMBC. He quickly joined and became chair of the AEESP Membership &amp; Demographics Committee, through which he led efforts to initiate a student video competition (check out this <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUT8zya53Vg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">winning video from UMBC</a>). He also led efforts to document the demographics of environmental engineering faculty and students in reports such as “<a href="https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/ees.2016.0063" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Trends in Population and Demographics of U.S. Environmental Engineering Students and Faculty from 2005 to 2013</a>” and “<a href="https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/ees.2017.0337" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Another Grand Challenge: Diversity in Environmental Engineering</a>.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>In 2021, Blaney was elected to the AEESP board of directors. Since that time, he has led a number of initiatives aimed at improving inclusion. During his one-year term as president, he will lead the board and executive committee, provide new charges to standing committees, correspond with members, represent AEESP at conferences and meetings, and drive new initiatives to grow the organization and support its members. </p>

    <p>In his first presidential address to AEESP, given in June, Blaney told members of how he found direction as an undergraduate student after attending a talk by environmental engineer Arup SenGupta, who spoke of efforts to remove arsenic from contaminated groundwater in rural villages in India.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“His passion and dedication to helping those without other resources inspired me, set me on the path to becoming an environmental engineer, and helped me to become a better person,” Blaney said. He hopes to bring these same values to AEESP and its members.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>As president of AEESP, Blaney plans to develop an “AEESP Experts” program, which will connect environmental experts with reporters, and also an “AEESP Communities of Practice” initiative, which will gather small groups of AEESP members to develop new resources, such as new course material on climate change or best practices for graduate student recruitment, which can be shared with the whole community.</p>

<Title>UMBC chemical engineering student intern finds purpose giving patients hope</Title>

    <p>A few weeks into her summer internship with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, rising senior <strong>Ortisemoyowa “Moyo” Ikomi</strong>, <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">chemical engineering</a>, attended an event celebrating a milestone in the company’s construction of a <a href="https://www.astrazeneca-us.com/media/press-releases/2024/astrazeneca-expands-us-manufacturing-footprint-to-accelerate-ambitions-in-next-generation-cell-therapy-discovery-and-development.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">new drug manufacturing plant</a> in Rockville, Maryland. During the event, the organizers played a video featuring a young girl whose seemingly terminal cancer was cured with immunotherapy drugs—the same type of drugs that would be manufactured in the new facility.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“This girl was in hospice care, at home with her family who thought they might just have to wait for her life to end, and this drug gave her a new lease on life. It drove home for me how important this work is, and how I would love to keep working in the pharmaceutical industry,” says Ikomi.</p>

    <p>Ikomi landed her internship with AstraZeneca after talking with a company representative at the <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/the-2024-career-fair/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Career Fair</a>. She worked on the company’s management of the planned Rockville plant, investigating a software tool that could track construction progress.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It’s not traditional chemical engineering, more within the realm of project management of large-scale engineering projects. I’m definitely enjoying it,” Ikomi says. “I’ve learned so much during the internship. The experience has made me think I’d like to continue working in the engineering project management sphere.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Ikomi credits the UMBC Career Center with supporting her throughout her internship application process—consulting with her on application timelines, uncovering resources for finding job openings, and offering tips for honing her resume and interviewing skills. “They offer an invaluable service,” she says. “Even more students could benefit from using them.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Ikomi, who came to UMBC from Lagos, Nigeria, says she arrived thinking she wanted to be a scientific researcher. When she realized basic research wasn’t the best fit for her, faculty and fellow students listened as she talked through her dilemma and offered advice on other options. She found that her true passions lay in shepherding discoveries from the lab to the wider world, where they could directly impact people’s lives.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Since that celebration event at AstraZeneca, Ikomi says she often thinks back to the video of the young girl who was cured of cancer. “When I think of this internship as a whole, my mind always goes to that experience. That moment crystallized that this type of work is what I want to dedicate my career to.” </p>
