Congratulations to the UMBC chess team for placing third in the 2014 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship and qualifying to advance to the President’s Cup on April 5-6 at the New York Athletic Club.  This tournament, known as the Final Four of College Chess, will determine the 2015 U.S. college team chess champion.

The UMBC team in this year’s Pan-Am consists of GM Niclas Huschenbeth, IM Levan Bregadze, IM Tanguy Ringoir, GM Akshayraj Kore and WGM Nazi Paikidze (alternate).

The final standings were: Webster University A (5.5 points), the University of Texas at Dallas A (5 points), the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (5 points) and Texas Tech University A (4.5 points). UTD placed ahead of UMBC by virtue of winning their match.

Competitive UMBC Team Excels In Intellect (CBS Baltimore)

On Sunday, April 6, 2014, UMBC Chess took second place in the President’s Cup, also known as the Final Four of College Chess. UMBC has won the President’s Cup a record six times, and this year competed against Texas Tech, the University of Illinois and Webster University, which grabbed the title this year.

Last weekend International Grandmaster Akshayraj Kore from India  (FIDE rating 2481) earned the title of 2013-2014 UMBC Chess Champion by being the top UMBC student to finish the UMBC Chess Championship held Sept 14-15 in the Commons.  Kore is a new MS student in CS.Former UMBC chess team member National Master Aaron Khan (2390) won the 5-round Swiss System tournament with 4.5 points in a dramatic finish, drawing International Master Levan Bregadze (2396) from Georgia and unexpectedly defeating Kore and International Grandmaster Niclas Huschenbeth (2537) from Germany.

The 2013-2014 UMBC Chess Team will comprise Niclas Huschenbeth, Akshayraj Kore, Levan Bregadze, Nazi Paikidze from Georgia, and Sabina Foisor from Romania.  Paikidze and Foisor are International Woman Grandmasters, and Paikidze is also an International Master.  The team is preparing to compete at the 2013 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Championship, which will take place December 27-30 at Texas Tech.

The UMBC Chess team was featured in the July, 2013 Washingtonian magazine. The article highlighted Washington, DC for, “We’re great at sports you didn’t even know existed.”

The short piece focuses on the team’s history and how they are seeking to reclaim their once former dominance in college chess. You can play UMBC’s team in the September annual UMBC chess championship.

Earlier this month UMBC’s chess team was formally recognized on the floor of the Maryland State Senate and the House with a citation from Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones (UMBC, ’76, psychology) UMBC Associate Vice President Lisa Akchin represented Dr. Hrabowski.

The UMBC team then played a friendly match with the members of the Maryland General Assembly Chess Challenge.

“It was a great experience to be recognized by the House of Senate and the House of Delegates. After being awarded we ended up playing for about two hours games with some of the senators, said Sabina Foisor, a member of the team and a graduate student at UMBC.

The UMBC chess team headed into the 2012 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship with a record nine titles to its name. The competition known informally as the Pan-Am, was held December 27 to 30 in Princeton, New Jersey. Since the tournament began in 1946, dozens of universities throughout the Americas have participated. The Retrievers won their first Pan-Am title in 1996, and then embarked on a five-year title streak from 1998 to 2002.

This year, the Retrievers tied for first place with 3 other Universities: University of Texas, Dallas; Webster University, which had 2 teams; and the University of Illinois. “It was an exciting finish. This was the strongest Pan Am in the history of the event. Twenty – three grandmasters as well as 5 teams rated over 2500 competed,” says Alan Sherman, Director of the UMBC Chess Program.

The UMBC team, all on chess scholarships, is composed of students not only with exceptional chess skills but also with strong academic records, Sherman says. UMBC requires students to maintain a 3.0 GPA to maintain chess scholarships. The Retrievers last won the Pan-Am title in 2009, and took second last year. This year’s team will compete in the 2012 President’s Cup, the “Final Four of College Chess,” to be held in April 6-7, 2013 in Herndon, Va.

The UMBC Chess Team is training for the 2012 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship (“The World Series of College Chess”), which will take place December 27-30, in Princeton, NJ. The Pan-Am determines the top college or university team in North, South, and Central America, and the Caribbean. In its current form, it has been held annually since 1946. The Retrievers have won or tied for first place a record nine times (96,98,99,00(tie),01(tie),02,05,08(tie),09).

The top four USA schools will advance to the President’s Cup (“Final Four of College Chess”), which will take place in early April in Herndon, VA. Started in 2001, the Final Four determines the top USA college team. The Retrievers have won the Final Four a record six times.

Whereas the Pan-Am is a six-round team Swiss tournament scored by team points, the Final Four is a three-round team round robin tournament scored by individual points. Dr. Alan Sherman, Director of the UMBC Chess Program, considers team Swiss tournaments the most exciting form of college chess because each player must act in the best interest of the team, which might be in conflict with what is in the best interest for his or her individual game. For example, if the team needs a win, a player who normally might settle for a draw in an even or worse position in his or her game might have to assume the risk of playing for a win.

This year’s team includes two new players: International Grandmaster Niclaus Huschenbeth (FIDE rating 2536) from Hamburg, Germany, and International Woman Grandmaster Nazi Paidikze (2394) from the Republic of Georgia. Grandmaster Huschenbeth became the 2012-2013 UMBC Champion when he won the UMBC Chess Championship September 15-16 with an undefeated score of 4.5 points out of 5.

The two women on the team––International Women Grandmasters Paidikze and Sabina Foisor––are the fifth and sixth highest rated women in the USA. In early September, Foisor played on the USA Women’s Chess Team at the Chess Olympiads in Istanbul.

Last year, the University of Texas at Dallas won the Pan-Am, and Texas Tech won the Final Four. This year, however, the favorite is Webster University in St. Louis, MO, a newcomer to chess. Webster recruited the entire Texas Tech Team and its coach International Grandmaster Susan Polgar. Investing heavily in chess, they also recruited some of the top young rising stars, including Ray Robson.

The UMBC Team comprises Giorgi Margvelashvili (Captain), Niclas Huschenbeth, Sasha Kaplan, Sabina Foisor, and alternates Nazi Paikidze, Adithya Balasubramanian, and Benjamin Krause.

Alex Onischuk ’07, modern languages and linguistics, was named the director of Texas Tech University’s chess program on July 30, according to an article in The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

The Ukraine-born grandmaster was captain of UMBC’s chess team, during a period in which the team won four consecutive national championships from 2002 to 2006. Texas Tech’s team are also champions, winning the President’s Cup for the second consecutive year this year.

Onischuk, currently ranked third in the country among chess players, released a statement saying, ““I am thrilled to be selected as head coach of the defending national collegiate championship chess team at Texas Tech, and I hope to use my national and international chess experience to help the Texas Tech chess team successfully defend its championship.”

The Baltimore Sun and the Washington Times covered the UMBC chess team this week as they competed in the 2012 President’s Cup.

The team tied with the University of Texas at Dallas for second place, behind Texas Tech and ahead of New York University. The competition, known informally as the Final Four, was held March 30 to April 1 in Herndon, Va., at the Westin Dulles Hotel.

Teams qualified for the match back in December, during the 2011 Pan-Am Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship. In that match UMBC came in second, ahead of Texas Tech and New York University and behind the University of Texas at Dallas. All four teams advanced to the Final Four. In that event, UMBC and UTD both earned 7.5 points, with Texas Tech scoring 8 and NYU 1.
