<Title>Center for Women in Technology Scholar shines on the volleyball court</Title>

    <p><strong>Kayla Tomas</strong> cites UMBC’s Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) Scholars Program for empowering her and giving her a sense of community, especially as a Latina woman in STEM. In <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/cwitscholars/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CWIT Scholars</a>, a merit-based scholarship for talented undergraduates in computing and other technical fields, she developed friendships, found mentorship, and was able to create a close network of colleagues.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>A star athlete, Tomas played on the women’s Division 1 <a href="https://umbcretrievers.com/sports/wvball/index" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">volleyball team</a> all four years of her time at UMBC, and helped guide the team to championships in three consecutive years. She participated as a member of the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/hlsu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Hispanic Latino Student Union</a>, and started her own Latin dance team. As a <a href="https://umbc.welcometocollege.com/grit-guide" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Grit Guide</a>, she gave more than 50 tours of campus.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC’s alumni community has celebrated and supported Tomas through one of the university’s coveted <a href="https://www.alumni.umbc.edu/s/1325/21/interior.aspx?sid=1325&amp;gid=1&amp;pgid=451#:~:text=Eligible%20students%20may%20apply%20for,generous%20support%20of%20UMBC%20alumni." rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Alumni Endowed Scholarships</a>, awarded to six students each year through support from UMBC’s Alumni Association.</p>

    <h4><strong>Has there been a mentor or fellow student who influenced your time at UMBC?</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>“Gina Ralston</strong>, a coordinator in admissions and orientation, was a staff mentor who influenced my time at UMBC. She continuously reassured me of how much of a positive impact I have. Gina was my boss when I worked as a Grit Guide. She made me feel appreciated and seen. I loved this job because I got to share my knowledge with younger students who are new to this process, maybe even women looking to be in STEM.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>What has been the best part of your UMBC experience?</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>“The best part of my UMBC experience would have to be <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-volleyball-wins-third-consecutive-america-east-championship/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">winning the America East title in volleyball three years in a row</a>. So much hard work, time, and dedication went into training, and it truly paid off. The friendships I made, the breakthroughs I experienced, and the challenges I faced, made me into a stronger individual and this couldn’t have happened without an amazing group of teammates. It has always been a dream of mine to play collegiate volleyball at the highest level and I achieved that. Seeing my family at every home and away game always put a smile on my face. They are my rock and have been through the highs and lows with me.”</p>

<Title>A student leader gives UMBC&#8217;s new president her first campus tour</Title>

    <p>One of <strong>Sianna Serio</strong>’s most memorable UMBC experiences was giving a campus tour to UMBC President <strong>Valerie Sheares Ashby</strong> during <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/welcoming-new-president-valerie-sheares-ashby/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">her first day as the university’s new leader</a>. Serio was ideally suited for the job, having worked for Residential Life as a resident assistant and for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation as team lead for UMBC’s <a href="https://orientation.umbc.edu/opa/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">orientation peer ambassadors</a> and as team lead for the <a href="https://umbc.welcometocollege.com/grit-guide" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Grit Guides</a>, training and managing the rest of the campus tour guide team.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Prior to Serio’s first full semester at UMBC, she traveled to the University of Bristol to participate in <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/dawg-days-abroad-the-scoop-on-umbcs-newest-summer-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">the first Dawg Days: Abroad program</a>, studying comparative politics. So, it was there in Bristol, England, that she first connected with the UMBC community. Since then, she has been involved in many UMBC student organizations, including the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/swe" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Society of Women Engineers</a>, <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/aslumbc" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Sign of Life</a>, <a href="https://firstgen.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">First Generation Network</a> and the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/umbccrafters" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Crafters</a> club.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The Center for Women in Technology (<a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CWIT</a>) has been the academic focal point for Serio during her time at UMBC. She has been a CWIT Affiliate from the start, applied to live on the <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/affiliates/living-learning-community/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CWIT Living Learning Community</a> floor for her first academic year, and volunteered for several events for prospective students. Last academic year, she served as a CWIT Peer Mentor for three incoming first-year students majoring in computer science. With her experience and enjoyment as a mentor, she became the CWIT Peer Mentoring Program student lead for 2022–2023 and has hosted several successful events for the 94 members of the program.</p>

    <p>“<strong>Naomi Corns</strong> was a student a year above me who strongly influenced my first two years at UMBC. We originally met through a sociology class. While we weren’t the same major, we had a lot in common in personality and drive. After getting to know each other both inside and outside the classroom, she was one of the people to recommend me to be a resident assistant and she inspired me to become an active member of the UMBC community. She had also been an orientation peer ambassador while at UMBC, which I pursued as well. If it wasn’t for her leading by example and showing her support, I don’t think I would have been where I am today as a part of UMBC or as a student.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>What has been the best part of your UMBC experience?</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>“Everyone gets to choose how they want to show up everyday and the mark they want to make, and UMBC students are given so many opportunities to do so. When I came to UMBC, I had no intention of getting involved and putting myself out there. But after seeing so many opportunities laid out in front of me after just a few weeks on UMBC’s campus, it was almost impossible for me to avoid. I was constantly encouraged by the people around and me and I have grown in every aspect of my life.”</p>

<Title>Amid surging demand for computing education, UMBC initiatives boost student success</Title>

    <p>On a Friday afternoon in late February, two students hoisted a pair of oversized scissors and cut the ribbon for the space housing one of UMBC’s newest tutoring programs: the <a href="https://academicsuccess.umbc.edu/computing-success-center/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Computing Success Center</a>. The Center is designed to provide peer-to-peer support to students from any major, taking any course, who have computing questions.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The Computing Success Center started as just a few tables in the library,” says <strong>Amanda Knapp,</strong> who leads UMBC’s broader <a href="https://academicsuccess.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Academic Success Center</a>. Since the Computing Success Center tutoring program launched in 2020, it has seen skyrocketing demand. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“We are so happy for our students to now have a dedicated space for computing support, as a result of successful collaborations and valued partnerships from across the university,” says Knapp, associate vice provost and assistant dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs. “We are thrilled to introduce new tutoring options to the growing portfolio of academic support offerings available to all undergraduate students.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The growing demand for Computing Success Center services reflects in part increased demand for computing education. Over the past ten years, the number of UMBC students pursuing a computing-related bachelor’s degree in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (<a href="https://coeit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">COEIT</a>) has increased by more than 60%. During that same time, the number of computing degrees awarded to women and students from racial and ethnic groups traditionally underrepresented in computing fields increased at an even higher rate.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The Computing Success Center is one of many UMBC initiatives that is boosting the success of diverse students in high-demand computing fields.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“At both the undergraduate and graduate level, applications for our programs from a broad diversity of students are incredibly strong,” says <strong>Keith Bowman</strong>, the dean of COEIT. “New students have shared that more senior students’ positive views of our programs inspired them to pursue computing degrees, which we find very gratifying.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Careful course design</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>When <strong>Annamaria Palmiero</strong> came to UMBC as a freshman in 2021, she had never programmed before. Still, she was curious about the subject, and a good friend encouraged her to try it out. So, she enrolled in a class—called Computational Design and Thinking, or COMP101—designed with students like her in mind.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The course, which debuted in 2012 and has become increasingly popular, assumes no prior experience with computing. It provides students with a broad overview of the field, builds their technical and professional skills, and gives them opportunities to work on group projects. Since 2019, it has also focused on ethical considerations in computing, a component of the course that was designed and implemented under the leadership of <a href="https://coeit.umbc.edu/ecep/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s Engineering and Computing Education Program</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Many students say the course helps them feel less intimidated by coding. It also helps them decide which computing program is best for them,” says <strong>Mark Berczynski</strong>, a lecturer who has been teaching the course since 2019. UMBC offers a broad range of computing pathways, such as majors and minors in computer science and information systems and majors in business technology administration and computer engineering.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The course has been shown to increase the likelihood that students, especially women, will stay in a computing major. For Palmiero, the experience in the course convinced her to pursue a computer science degree in addition to her already planned statistics degree. She has also become a teaching fellow for the course.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“COMP101 provided a safe space for me to launch into programming, without the overwhelmingly fast-paced nature of other introductory computing courses. I’m unsure if I would have ever become a computer science major, let alone tried programming, if it wasn’t for the course,” Palmiero says.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Other students who have taken COMP101 agree. <strong>Drew Barlow</strong> took the course in 2019 because he hadn’t taken the precalculus math classes required for a typical first computer science course. He is now pursuing a Ph.D. in computer science at UMBC. “I can definitely attribute my love for this subject in many ways to my experience in COMP101,” he said.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The ethos behind the design of COMP101—to break down barriers to success in computing for students from a variety of backgrounds—also pervades other curriculum decisions in COEIT, from adding courses to help transfer students with backgrounds in different coding languages, to forging pathways for students who wish to transfer between computing degree programs.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Easy access to support</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Carefully designed computing courses start students on the road to success, while services such as the Computing Success Center help students deepen their knowledge as they progress in their studies. The center offers drop-in tutoring, including both course-specific resources and general guidance in programming languages. All of the course-specific tutors are supporting students in classes they have taken themselves.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The Computing Success Center responds to expanding demand for this kind of support. In fall 2022, the Center logged nearly 1,500 student visits, a more than ten-fold increase from when it launched in fall 2020. </p>

    <p><strong>Ariana Pray</strong>, a sophomore computer science major, says the tutoring at the Center goes beyond helping her complete assignments, offering conceptual guidance that has made her a more efficient coder. She appreciates the wide range of tutoring times available and the opportunity to learn from her peers in person.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I definitely recommend going to the Computing Success Center,” she says. “You’ll come away with a better understanding of the material and will be better prepared when it comes time for exams.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Students can also access mentoring in study skills and time management, personalized assistance from academic advocates, and other support through the broader Academic Success Center. Meanwhile, departments that offer computing degrees have worked to foster a culture where students make it a habit to access additional learning resources early and often.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Opportunities to connect and explore</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>While supporting academic success is a priority for computing programs, that goes far beyond coursework. UMBC faculty and staff mentor students as they seek to discover their passions and find pathways to meaningful careers.</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Shaniah Reece</strong> is a senior information systems major and <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/cwitscholars/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Women in Technology Scholar</a> who credits the culture of UMBC for helping her discover how to connect a technical career to her values and passions.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I care about social justice and equity,” she says. “I’ve realized I can apply technical tools to study and address these issues.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Recently, Reece has been working with <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbcs-james-foulds-receives-nsf-career-award-to-improve-the-fairness-robustness-of-ai/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">James Foulds</a>, assistant professor of information systems, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/maryland-researchers-working-to-correct-potential-biases-in-artificial-intelligence/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">to identify biases in artificial intelligence systems and work to improve their fairness</a>. She plans to continue her research career and is currently deciding between graduate programs at Emory University, the University of Southern California, and the University of Pittsburgh.</p>

    <h4>Q: Tell us about how you wound up at UMBC.</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>Hello, my name is Anthony Rivera and I am a senior <a href="https://informationsystems.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">information systems (IS) major</a>, theatre minor student using he/him pronouns. I study IS because I am fascinated by the way people interact with technology and seeing those trends in human activity. I plan to continue schooling past undergrad to have the fullest understanding possible of the way we use and will continue to use technology. Outside of school my main hobbies are photography, bodybuilding, and musical theatre. Photography is one of my favorite hobbies and I will probably do it for the rest of my life.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4>Q: What do you love most about your academic program?</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>Something I really enjoy is the collaboration between students. It’s clear we are all here to improve ourselves and to learn. I find that all of my colleagues in class have been willing to help, offer unique insight, and foster a great environment for learning. When we all work together and work hard, each task and goal seems feasible rather than impossible.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4>Q: Are you a member of any academic groups? What’s it like?</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A:</strong> I am a member of CWIT <a href="http://cwit.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">(Center for Women in Technology)</a>, more specifically the <a href="https://cybersecurity.umbc.edu/cyberscholars/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Cyber Scholars Program</a>. I really appreciate CWIT for their guidance, allowing me to discuss what classes I should take, what research I should do, and helping me craft my resume which ultimately led to my first internship at CU Boulder in Colorado, where I did research on gamification principles and their relation to learning performance with music, a experience I will never forget.</p>

    <h4>Q: We like to use a saying at UMBC that we do “public research for public good”…so I’m wondering if you might speak to the ways your current research might fit into this idea? </h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A:</strong> I wanted to know more about machine learning, and Dr. James Foulds (IS) happened to give a lecture about his work during a CWIT Cyber Practicum, so I reached out to see if I could assist him in his work and learn about the topics he does research about. I was not prepared for such a project that is so focused on equity for all in Medicaid, but it has opened my eyes further to the inequalities people face due to variables and factors outside of their control. Projects like this enable people to get care so that they focus on their lives and those goals are in line with my personal philosophies. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>If my research with Dr. Foulds is successful then we will have created a system that allows those who previously would not have received care or who have to wait a very long time for Medicaid to receive it sooner. This allows people to return to their lives, go back to contributing to society, ultimately lifting a burden on those who cannot afford private care. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>I think this research is invaluable and a step in the right direction, which I believe is guaranteed care for all. I do not think anyone, regardless of financial background, class, race, gender orientation, or ability, should be denied whatever care they require, especially when we are the richest country in the history of humanity. So I believe projects like this move the needle in terms of what we should and can expect from our government healthcare systems, and I think that we can slowly begin to realize what truly is fair for the people.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4>Q: When you’re not in class or conducting research, how do you like to spend your free time?</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A:</strong> I am a member of the <a href="http://umbcmtc.weebly.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Musical Theatre Club</a>, a place where I am allowed to focus on the non-STEM and activate a different part of my brain with a different type of expression and it’s nice having that kind of balance.</p>

    <h4>Q: Have you found a supportive environment at UMBC?</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>Most of my friends that I still have, since I am a senior, actually came from my freshman year in a computer science. I think being in that shared environment where our mutual interests tended to align sort of fostered an easy relationship between me and the friends I have now. All of them are brilliant in their own unique ways and I have never been around so many diverse people all allowing me to learn and see more about life in general that I had not before.</p>

<Title>UMBC students, educators, and researchers advance Maryland through innovative computing partnership</Title>

    <p>In early 2022, <strong>Nadja Franklin</strong> ‘23 was exploring summer opportunities through the <a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Career Center</a> when she heard about a chance to connect with tech internships at Maryland’s state agencies. As a business technology administration major, her interest was piqued. She arrived at the on-campus internship event with résumé in hand, ready to discuss her skills, and her preparation and enthusiasm paid off. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The hiring event was hosted by the <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-state-of-maryland-launch-maryland-institute-for-innovative-computing-at-cyber-summit/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland Institute for Innovative Computing</a> (MIIC) to help state agencies expand their technical talent pipeline through intern recruitment. The MIIC is a collaboration between the <a href="https://www.usmd.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">University System of Maryland</a> and partners in the public and private sectors, launched in 2021. Administered by UMBC, the MIIC addresses workforce challenges related to computing and analytics in state agencies. Students at colleges and universities across Maryland are eligible to apply for internships through the MIIC, connecting skilled students with state employers seeking fresh tech talent.</p>

    <h4><strong>Talent meets opportunity</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>The MIIC is continuously growing the pipeline of tech talent ready to support state agencies in the longer term, helping them run securely and efficiently. So far, in 2022, they’ve connected nearly 40 interns with opportunities at state agencies across Maryland, including the Department of Labor, Department of Information Technology, Department of Health, Department of Transportation and the Chief Data Office within the Governor’s Office.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The MIIC reflects Maryland’s dedication to ensuring our state agencies have the technical staffing and internal infrastructure they need,” explains <strong>Annie Weinschenk</strong>, program director of workforce initiatives in the UMBC Career Center. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“With cyber crime on the rise, including attacks on government agencies, MIIC is helping to build a skilled workforce dedicated to service within the state of Maryland,” Weinschenk says. “MIIC internship areas range from data science, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, to geographic information systems at seven agencies across Maryland.”</p>

    <p>Franklin is a <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/tsite/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">T-SITE Scholar</a> in <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s Center for Women in Technology</a> who transferred to UMBC from the Community College of Baltimore County. At the MIIC event, she connected with the <a href="https://mdot.maryland.gov/pages/home.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland Department of Transportation </a>(MDOT) about projects that would draw on her interests and experience, and she realized the opportunity could be a great match.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Afterward, she quickly completed her application for a project management internship in MDOT’s information technology department. She also accessed other Career Center resources to help her stand out as a top candidate, including interview prep with Weinschenk and Career Center Director <strong>Christine Routzahn</strong>.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Students come to their internship experiences with a variety of backgrounds, levels of experience, and majors,” says Weinschenk. “We work to make sure they put their best foot forward, so they can access these unique hands-on learning opportunities.” </p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Meaningful connections</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Franklin’s primary project with MDOT involves radio frequency identification (RFID), tagging IT and non-IT assets for use in various projects across the agency. But she has particularly enjoyed the chance to meet with MDOT’s chief information officer and deputy chief information officer. She’s also had a chance to learn about the broad range of projects across MDOT, and how project management works, through supporting directors’ meetings. </p>

    <p>Franklin also drew on her writing skills and creativity to help develop scripts for MDOT training videos, and she enjoyed a unique chance to participate in the video filming and production process. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Beyond learning new skills, her favorite aspect of the internship has been MDOT’s inclusive, welcoming environment.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>K-12 and higher ed partnerships</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>While Franklin came to UMBC interested in a career in tech, that’s not the case for many students who have the talent and skills to succeed in tech fields. With this in mind, the MIIC has also focused on expanding K-12 initiatives, to help prepare students earlier on for these high-demand careers, particularly in cybersecurity.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Earlier this year, Governor Larry Hogan announced the launch of the Maryland Cyber Range for Elevating Workforce and Education, operated by the MIIC. This $1.2 million initiative will expand cybersecurity education and training through collaboration with the Maryland Center for Computing Education (MCCE), Virginia Tech U.S. Cyber Range, and the nonprofit Teach Cyber.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>This partnership will include initiatives at all educational levels, from K-12 through higher education and workforce training. The U.S. Cyber Range will provide access to a high quality simulated environment for teachers and students to learn cybersecurity. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Overall, this collaborative effort will enable Maryland to continue to grow and strengthen the state’s cybersecurity education infrastructure, explains <strong>Jack Suess</strong>, UMBC’s vice president of information technology and chief technology officer. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Innovating cybersecurity education </strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>A leader in cybersecurity education, UMBC is also advancing the field in other ways, complementing the work of the MIIC. For example, <strong>Alan T. Sherman</strong>, professor of computer science, recently received more than $260,000 of a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study and improve how cybersecurity is taught at the U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Military Academy. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The project, Examining Pedagogy in Cybersecurity (EPIC), is collaborative with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and University of Minnesota Duluth, and is funded through NSF’s Secure and Trustworthy Computing (SaTC) program. Because the academies teach cybersecurity to all first-year students, EPIC offers a large-scale opportunity to investigate how simulation-based teaching and learning affects different student populations.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>In the first phase of the research, Sherman and his collaborators—including computer science Ph.D. student <strong>Andew Slack</strong> and <strong>Linda Oliva</strong>, assistant professor of education—will study how instructors at the academies structure and teach their cybersecurity courses. In the second phase, they will introduce active simulation-based learning exercises and pedagogies and assess their effectiveness. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC’s championship-winning Cyberdawgs cyberdefense team will help adapt and improve learning materials. As one quantitative measure of the new pedagogy’s effectiveness, EPIC will assess students’ conceptual understanding using the Cybersecurity Concept Inventory (CCI), developed by Sherman and his team. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Benefits for Maryland</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>MIIC initiatives continue to expand in new directions. In research, <a href="https://www.hilltopinstitute.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Hilltop Institute at UMBC</a> is receiving funding to bring together health data related to opioid addiction from different state sources to more accurately identify patients’ risks for relapse. Like the MIIC’s educational initiatives, this work demonstrates how innovations in computing can benefit Maryland and its residents.</p>

<Title>Only about 1 in 5 engineering degrees go to&#160;women</Title>

    <p>Despite various efforts to <a href="https://beta.nsf.gov/funding/initiatives/broadening-participation/supporting-women-and-girls-stem" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">encourage more women to study STEM fields</a> in college, the percentage of engineering bachelor’s degrees earned by women in the United States hasn’t increased much in the 21st century. Specifically, it has risen from 18% in 1998 to 22% in 2018.</p>
    
    
    
    <div>
    
    </div>
    
    
    
    <p>Of all the fields in STEM – or science, technology, engineering and mathematics – the engineering workforce <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2018/01/09/diversity-in-the-stem-workforce-varies-widely-across-jobs/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">has the lowest proportion of women</a>, at 14%.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>That low participation matters for several reasons. Women are not only being left out of some of the <a href="https://www.bls.gov/ooh/architecture-and-engineering/home.htm" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">highest-paying jobs in STEM</a>, but companies are losing out as well. Research shows that gender-diverse teams <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/eriklarson/2017/09/21/new-research-diversity-inclusion-better-decision-making-at-work/?sh=71ea3baa4cbf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">make better business decisions</a> than teams that are all-male.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>So why aren’t women going into engineering? And what, if anything, can be done to help women who decide to study engineering stay the course? The Society of Women Engineers reports that <a href="https://alltogether.swe.org/2019/11/swe-research-update-women-in-engineering-by-the-numbers-nov-2019/#_ednref7" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">over 32% of female STEM majors switch to another major</a>. Research shows this rate is <a href="https://www.rise.hs.iastate.edu/projects/CBiRC/IJEE-WhyTheyLeave.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">typically higher</a> than the rate at which men leave engineering. Of those women who leave the engineering profession, 30% cite the workplace environment as the reason, the society reports. A 2017 study of over 5,000 women who earned bachelor’s degrees in engineering <a href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2017.00875" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">found that 10% never entered the field and 27% left the profession</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <h2>Colleges intervene</h2>
    
    
    
    <p>These are all issues I’ve been <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=sZGzlnMAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">researching</a> as associate director of the <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/mission-vision/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Women in Technology</a> at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, or UMBC. In 2018, several colleagues and I found that computing and engineering students who are supported by the center <a href="https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3159450.3159533" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">graduate within four years at a rate of 61.2%</a> – a than students who are not supported by the center. The center supports students through scholarships and extensive academic and social support; in the 2021-22 academic year, 73% of students supported were women. And recently two alumnae of the center – one in <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/fourteen-umbc-students-and-recent-alumni-receive-fulbright-awards-setting-new-record/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2019</a> and one in <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-2022-fulbright-student-scholars/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2022</a> – have become <a href="https://us.fulbrightonline.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fulbright Scholars</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The program at UMBC is by no means the only campus-based program in the nation that supports female students in their plans to enter engineering and computer science – two areas in which women are <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2018/01/09/diversity-in-the-stem-workforce-varies-widely-across-jobs/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">persistently underrepresented</a>. Through my research, I have discovered that there are more than two dozen such programs or initiatives at colleges and universities throughout the nation. They include, for example, the <a href="https://sites.udel.edu/wie/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Women in Engineering Program</a> at University of Delaware, the <a href="https://wise.ncsu.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Women in Science and Engineering program</a> at North Carolina State University and the <a href="https://awe.seas.upenn.edu/#:%7E:text=Women%20make%20up%20approximately%2040,and%20opportunities%20to%20Penn%20Engineering." rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Advancing Women in Engineering</a> program at the University of Pennsylvania.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>To better understand the necessity of such programs, consider the abundance of research that has found women who study STEM report <a href="https://doi.org/10.1353/csd.2016.0072" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">“chilly” and “negative” experiences</a> in the classroom and on campus. This includes being subjected to gender-based harassment and a “<a href="https://doi.org/10.1353/csd.2016.0072" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">perception that women are unable to ‘do science.</a>’” Colleges also have long struggled with how to help women <a href="https://www.ijemst.net/index.php/ijemst/article/view/293/141" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">see themselves as part of the scientific community</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <h2>Proven strategies</h2>
    
    
    
    <p>It doesn’t have to be that way. Research shows that when female engineering students are mentored by female peers, they feel less anxious about their ability, have <a href="https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1613117114" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">more positive academic experiences</a> and are more likely to stick with STEM as a major. Peer-based tutoring has also <a href="https://peer.asee.org/examining-the-effectiveness-of-scholars-assisting-scholars-program-among-undergraduate-engineering-students" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">been shown to help students get their grades up</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>With support from an approximately $233,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, I have also been looking at <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2025349&amp;HistoricalAwards=false" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">what kinds of academic experiences and supports</a> help female engineering students stay the course.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Based on my analysis of 356 female engineering students at UMBC from 2007 to 2016, what follows are preliminary findings from my National Science Foundation research:</p>
    
    
    
    <h2>1. High school math and grades make a difference</h2>
    
    
    
    <p>Starting college in a higher level of college math and having a higher high school GPA both help. Specifically, starting college at a higher level of college math – such as Advanced Calculus or Differential Equations – increases the likelihood of graduating with an engineering degree within five years by 8% over those who start at lower levels of college math. Having a higher high school GPA increases the likelihood even more.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>To boost the number of women who earn engineering degrees, educators must help girls get on track at the high school level. This means establishing a strong record of success in their high school math and science courses.</p>
    
    
    
    <h2>2. Gateway engineering courses matter</h2>
    
    
    
    <p>By “gateway” courses, I mean classes that are required to officially declare the engineering major and that faculty identified as critical for success. In other words, classes that make or break an engineer. This would include courses such as Principles of Digital Design in computer engineering, Statics in mechanical engineering and Chemical Process Thermodynamics in chemical engineering.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>I found that women who took more gateway engineering courses were less likely to leave their intended engineering major.</p>
    
    
    
    <h2>3. Freshman and sophomore years in college are critical</h2>
    
    
    
    <p>For those who eventually left engineering, making it through the first four semesters is critical. Among women students who left engineering, 59% – or about three out of five – did so during the first four semesters.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>This points toward the need for colleges and universities to provide very deliberate academic and social supports – such as tutoring and mentoring – for female engineering students at the very start of their college careers.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>If only 1 in 5 bachelor’s degrees in engineering are awarded to women, it may take these efforts and more to get the number anywhere close to being on par with the proportion that are awarded to men.</p>

<Title>UMBC&#8217;s 2022 Fulbright student scholars will travel the world to explore difficult questions</Title>

    <p>Eight recent UMBC graduates and alumni will soon travel to countries across three continents as 2022 Fulbright U.S. Student scholars. They include emerging leaders in education, astrophysics, cybersecurity, human rights, and more, and they are excited to explore difficult questions through fresh perspectives.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international exchange program. UMBC was named a <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-is-named-a-fulbright-top-producing-institution/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fulbright Top Producing Institution in 2019 – 2020</a>. In the last decade, UMBC has received over 60 Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for research and teaching placements in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East, South America, and Europe. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4>Creating new paths</h4>

    <p>This year marks UMBC’s first Fulbright awards to El Salvador and to the UK. <strong>Caleb Jacobson</strong> ’21, global studies, and M.A. ’23, sociology, will research human rights and the transition to peace in post-conflict El Salvador.<strong> Kaitlyn Keaton </strong>’22, computer engineering, a Cyber Scholar in the <a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/scholars-associates/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Women In Technology</a>, will head to Newcastle University (NU) in North East England to complete a master’s in cybersecurity. NU is recognized jointly by the UK’s National Cyber Security Center and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council as an Academic Centre of Excellence in cyber security research.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Keaton has focused on making the most of her college education by pursuing a wide range of learning experiences. She has held competitive software engineering internships at General Dynamics Mission and Systems and Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, and has participated in Capture the Flags cybersecurity competitions, but this will be her first learning experience abroad.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>As a Cyber Scholar and Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society member, Keaton is determined to further develop the skills necessary to be on the cutting edge of cybersecurity research. She is also committed to creating new pathways for more women and girls to be leaders in engineering. </p>

    <p>“I want to inspire and encourage even more girls and young women to join the cybersecurity world,” says Keaton. “There is a critical need to get girls interested at younger ages to show them they can do it too.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Intercultural understanding in medicine</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Maryam Elhabashy</strong> ’21, anthropology, developed an interest in the process of healing early in her life while surrounded by a family of physicians. In high school, she shadowed a physician at a hospital and saw instances where patients’ cultural backgrounds sometimes conflicted with the physician’s concerns. She wondered if a lack of intercultural understanding in medicine can get in the way of good medical care, leading to health disparities.</p>

    <p>Elhabashy found an answer in listening to culturally diverse perspectives. As a student of anthropology with a focus on medical anthropology, she found that listening to people’s stories can help physicians develop empathy. This is one way to ensure patients feel heard, understood, and are able to navigate medical processes that can give them access to the best care possible.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>While at UMBC, Elhabashy received an Undergraduate Research Award to research “Cupping and Wellness Among Muslims In the Baltimore-Washington Area.” She also served as a research assistant in sociology, anthropology, and public health (SAPH), studying physical activity among older African Americans in Baltimore. </p>

    <p>After graduating, Elhabashy worked at Rutgers University as a research assistant studying tobacco and e-cigarette use among minority populations. In the past year, she interned at the Amgen Scholar Program at the National Institute of Health, working with leading biomedical scientists to identify and address health disparities as a potential result of societal, cultural, and environmental influences.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>During her Fulbright year, Elhabashy will live in Kuwait City to work on her research project at Kuwait University titled, “Faith, Family, Food, and Fitness: Exploring Trends of Obesity Amongst Kuwaiti Women.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I hope to one day be at the forefront of a movement towards truly personalized medicine that embraces individuality and intercultural communication as a foundational tenet of the field,” she notes. “I hope my experience in Kuwait will serve as a strong foundation for this work.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Latine teachers needed</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Adrianna-Marie Urbina-Ruiz </strong>’21, mathematics, and M.A.T., secondary education, was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland, but her roots are in Venezuela. She remembers only having four Hispanic teachers growing up. All were Spanish language teachers and supported her academic and personal growth. However, Urbina-Ruiz felt some of her other teachers had lower expectations of her, limiting her opportunities, and she saw other Hispanic students struggle with this same experience.</p>

    <p>“Many Hispanic students learning English and those who are bilingual have been seen as having limited academic knowledge, limited potential,” says Urbina-Ruiz. “I want to stop that narrative.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>At UMBC, Urbina-Ruiz met <strong>Bonny Tighe</strong>, a senior lecturer of mathematics, who encouraged her to become a math major and a math teacher through the Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program. </p>

    <p>“I will never forget walking into her office hours for the first time. She recognized me as having one of the highest grades in her Calculus I class,” says Urbina-Ruiz. “She and the Sherman staff had confidence that I would rise to any challenge. They built a strong foundation for my success.”</p>

    <p>Urbina-Ruiz also completed a master’s in teaching and earned a certificate in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages while student-teaching at Lakeland Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore City, which serves many Hispanic families. “I want to have as many tools at my disposal to make my classroom as accessible as possible,” says Urbina-Ruiz. “I want to be the Latine STEM teacher I never had.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Urbina-Ruiz will work towards creating her first Collaborative Online International Learning program during her Fulbright year. She will connect college students at the Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia with students in Maryland while teaching English. “Latine teachers are needed around the world,” says Urbina-Ruiz.</p>

    <p>Urbina-Ruiz plans to return to teach in Baltimore City Public Schools where there is a high demand for bilingual Hispanic teachers.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Representation in science</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Similar to Elhabashy, <strong>Maithily Diana Díaz </strong>’21, biology and modern languages, linguistics, and intercultural communication, is pursuing a career focused on health equity. As a first-generation student, Díaz encourages other Latinos to go to college and to be ambitious even if it means they are in spaces where they are the only Latino, something she has experienced as a Latina in STEM. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I’m usually the only Latina, but now it means something more,” says Díaz. “Now, it’s just the jump of saying Latinos can be scientists, researchers, physicians. If we believe in ourselves then someone else will too. And once that door is opened, then who knows how far we can go.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Díaz recently moved to Tijuana, Mexico to work at a non-profit health clinic serving a largely refugee and migrant population. For the past school year she has been teaching science and medicine to predominantly Hispanic and African American K-12 students for Refugee Health Alliance in Harlem, while completing remote research in mental health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>During her Fulbright year, Díaz will complete a master’s in immunology and work on cancer research at the French National Institute of Health while mentoring undergraduate students at Sorbonne University. .</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It’s a dream come true that someone like me received a Fulbright at such prestigious institutions. My students were shocked,” says Díaz. “I want more and I intend to achieve it. But at the end of the day, this is for my community.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>While in France, Díaz will work with researchers seeking to identify more effective means of treating soft tissue sarcomas. The findings may reveal potentially novel immunotherapy targets for a variety of cancers. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>As a linguist with proficiency in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Russian, Díaz knows her ability to successfully communicate across multiple cultures and languages can lead to greater opportunities. She wants to show Latinos what can happen when they value their multicultural and multilingual lives as assets.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Following her Fulbright, Díaz plans to pursue an M.D., promoting equity in both research and healthcare.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Global education and disability</strong></h4>

    <p><strong>Mimi Yaldram</strong> ’20, history, is very familiar with the process of acclimating to a new culture and country. When she was seven years old, her family left their home in Karachi, Pakistan for the United States to seek better mental health services. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“We came  in 1999 right before 9/11,” says Yaldram. “It was a lot to manage the racism towards my Muslim family while learning how to live, study, access services, and work in the U.S.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>This experience inspired Yaldram’s passion for living and learning within multiple cultures, religions, and <s>l</s>anguages, which she began to explore at Montgomery College. There she held numerous executive student leadership roles and traveled abroad to Ethiopia, where she researched the influence of India on ancient trade routes and currency. </p>

    <p>In 2017, Yaldram joined UMBC’s Shady Grove campus, embarking on new student leadership opportunities, including serving as president of the Student History Association and studying abroad in Denmark. She learned about Viking history and participated in a dance project focusing on Danish pop dances and Pakistani Bollywood dances.</p>

    <p>Yaldram identifies as a student with a mental health disability, and she is passionate about advocating for and teaching other students with disabilities and neurological differences. For the past two years, she has tutored students with autism spectrum disorder on strengthening their writing, communication, and social skills.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Now that she has earned her both her Teaching English as a Second Language and mental health first-aid certifications, she is ready to spend her Fulbright year teaching English in Taiwan. She is excited to be part of Taiwan’s goal to become a bilingual nation by 2030 by raising English proficiency. She also looks forward to sharing her skills in disability education and services while teaching. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“My dream is to make a positive impact on immigrant communities by utilizing my own experiences and education,” says Yaldram. “I hope to make a difference and bring that to the Fulbright program in Taiwan.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Yaldram plans on a career at the intersection of global education, social justice, and disability beginning with humanitarian work in Pakistan after her Fulbright experience.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Korean world influence</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Chemutai Wangui Nganga</strong> ’21, global studies, comes from a Kenyan family in the United States. During elementary school, she lived in Kenya for four years where she improved her Swahili skills and learned more about her Kenyan culture. When she moved back to the U.S., her family settled in Howard County, Maryland, home to numerous international communities, especially a thriving Korean community. Nganga learned about the influence the Korean economy, cuisine, music, art, and technology have had on the world. </p>

    <p>Living in a diverse community, led Nganga to major in global studies at UMBC. She gained a greater understanding of the opportunities and conflicts of globalization and decided to focus on international politics and French. Her Asian studies courses increased her interest in Korean culture, which led her to pursue a Fulbright year in South Korea. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“For me, Korea is a full step into a new world,” says Nganga, who will be teaching English. “It is another chance to push the boundaries of my worldview as well as serve others.” She plans to explore a career path in foreign service on her return to the U.S.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Stellar research</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>As a burgeoning astrophysicist,<strong> Kaitlyn Szekerczes</strong> ’22, physics, lives and breathes for exploring the infinite universe. She didn’t know that all those nights stargazing on her deck with her dad and discussing the plausibility of science fiction shows would lead her to pursue a career in space science research. </p>

    <p>“I was always fascinated by the questions we were not able to answer. We are not even close to knowing nearly everything when it comes to astronomy,” says Szekerczes. “My goal is to contribute to answering lesser-known big and challenging research questions.”</p>

    <p>Szekerczes will lead a project on gravitational lensing of tidal disruption events at the Max-Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, Germany. It will be the first study to apply the technique of gravitational lensing—the bending of light by gravity—to researching tidal disruption events, which are events that happen when a supermassive black hole tidally disrupts a star.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“My dream job is to work as an astrophysicist for NASA,” says Szekerczes. “UMBC was the perfect fit for me because I was encouraged to pursue my passion for tackling challenging unanswered questions. I was also given the resources and support to piece together the puzzle of how to work towards my goals.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>After returning from Germany, Szekerczes will begin a Ph.D. program in astrophysics at Penn State University in fall 2023.</p>

    <p>Almeida, whose first degree is in business, came from Brazil with the goal of redefining her career path. “In the U.S., I thought, I’ll try for the first time in my life to do something that I want to do. I’ve always wanted to change the world, and it seems like the most changes in the world happen in technology.” Almeida is excited to use her software engineering position at Amazon as a jumping off point for volunteering with young women interested in STEM, exposing them to what is possible. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I want to be a model for middle school girls,” says Almeida. “I want that age group to know what’s possible in this field and for them to see someone like themselves designing software. When I started to code and saw my products running, then it really clicked for me—I can see myself building something that is actually going to be meaningful for the world.”</p>

<Title>UMBC faculty and staff award recipients place community at the core of their success</Title>

    <p>At UMBC’s 2022 Presidential Faculty and Staff Awards (PFASA), <strong>Tamra Mendelson</strong>, professor of biological sciences and recipient of the 2022 – 2025 Presidential Teaching Professor Award, said she loves “getting to the core of a concept” in her research and teaching. In her large introductory biology courses, which Mendelson has been teaching with humor, creativity, and enthusiasm since her arrival on campus in 2006, the concept might be an idea like natural selection. But as awardee after awardee addressed the audience, both in person and online, it became clear that all shared the same “core concept” of UMBC: community.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Teaching and research make me want to come to work every day, but it’s the community here, and Dr. Hrabowski in particular, who’ve made me want to come to UMBC every day,” Mendelson said.</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Yonathan Zohar</strong>, professor and chair of marine biotechnology and the 2022 – 2025 Presidential Research Professor, added, “This recognition is not about me, it’s about us,” adapting the opening quote from President Hrabowski’s book, <em>The Empowered University. </em>Zohar’s work, nurtured diligently over more than three decades, has in the last few years brought in more than $10 million dollars of research funding, earned international awards, and is poised to reimagine the seafood industry as we know it.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>And yet, Zohar says, “None of my research accomplishments would have been possible without the ‘about us’ spirit at UMBC—the spirit that together we can make everything and anything happen.”</p>

    <h4><strong>Supporting each other</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Helena Dahlen</strong>, executive administrative assistant in the Division of Information Technology and the 2022 – 2023 Presidential Distinguished Staff Award for Non-exempt Staff recipient, recalled becoming an active member of the community when she started at UMBC in 2015. She joined book clubs, participated in wellness events, attended lectures, and more.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It felt like I had moved into a small community,” she says. “Almost like a village, surrounded by brilliant people of all ages.” The supportive environment has allowed Dahlen to do her best work at UMBC and to give back. She generously contributes her energy to programs like Retriever Essentials and the Maryland Charity Campaign, and she serves as president of the Non-exempt Staff Senate.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Finally, <strong>Michael Pound</strong>, director of environmental safety and health and the 2022 – 2023 Presidential Distinguished Staff Award recipient, got to the heart of the matter. Recalling the challenges of managing the university’s response to the pandemic with a team of dedicated colleagues, he says, “I just couldn’t be prouder to work with these great folks.”</p>

    <h4><strong>Beyond imagination</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>The UMBC community, all of the awardees emphasized, has grown through years of thoughtful care and collaboration. It’s taken decades to cultivate the UMBC ethos of community support and shared leadership.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It’s hard to express how far we’ve come,” reflected President Hrabowski, as he offered remarks at his final PFASA as UMBC president. “Growing up, I could never have imagined the concept of UMBC—people from all over the world coming to study, to seek the truth, to get to know people different from themselves.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC’s newest awardees highlighted how that vision has become a reality, and Pres. Hrabowski honored all that they have contributed. “Leadership isn’t about one person at the top; it’s about what we all do,” Hrabowski said. “When we say we care about UMBC, what we’re saying is we care about each other.”</p>

    <h4><strong>Honoring excellence</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC’s other named awards honor members of the UMBC community who embody the university’s ethos, such as <strong>Diane Lee</strong>, retired vice provost and dean of undergraduate education; <strong>Marilyn E. Demorest</strong>, professor emerita of psychology and former vice provost for faculty affairs; and <strong>Teresa Lupinek</strong>, the late former executive administrative assistant to the president.     <h4><strong>USM Board of Regents awardees</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>This year, UMBC also had <a href="https://www.usmd.edu/newsroom/news/2232" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">two University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Award recipients</a>. These awards represent the highest honor bestowed on faculty and staff across the USM by the Board of Regents. Awardees are selected by the Council of University System Staff and approved by the Board. The awards recognize faculty and staff for excellence in teaching; research, scholarship, and creative activity; public service; mentoring; or innovation. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC has received an outsize share of these awards over the years, demonstrating the strength of our faculty and staff across all areas of achievement. This year, <strong>Marjoleine Kars</strong>, professor of history, received the 2022 USM Board of Regents Award for Excellence in Scholarship. Her latest book, <em>Blood on the River: A Chronicle of Mutiny and Freedom on the Wild Coast</em>, <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/umbcs-marjoleine-kars-receives-the-cundill-history-prize-and-frederick-douglass-book-prize-for-blood-on-the-river/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">has received widespread acclaim</a> for its discussion of a nearly successful rebellion of enslaved African and Indigenous people in the Dutch colony of Berbice in the 1860s. <em> </em> </p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Lee Blaney</strong>, associate professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering, received the 2022 USM Board of Regents Award for Excellence in Teaching. Blaney has <a href="https://news.umbc.edu/american-chemical-society-honors-umbcs-lee-blaney-for-commitment-to-mentoring-student-researchers/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">received awards previously</a> for exceptional mentoring and for engaging his students in high-impact research. His laboratory focuses on contaminants of emerging concern, such as compounds found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products, in waterways such as Chesapeake Bay.</p>
