    <p>Yet the use of high-performance computing is generally limited to a niche group. “Some researchers are very sophisticated in the use of these tools, but many are not,” says <strong>Vandana Janeja</strong>, a professor of information systems at UMBC.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Janeja is on a mission to spread advanced computing know-how far beyond its current borders. “It’s not just for the elites,” she says.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>She was recently awarded <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2321009&amp;HistoricalAwards=false" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">a nearly $1 million grant</a> from the National Science Foundation (NSF) that will help further that mission. The grant is part of a <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2321008&amp;HistoricalAwards=false" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">larger NSF collaborative award</a> with the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Sciences (UMCES).</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Janeja and her UMBC and UMCES colleagues will work to connect a wide range of students and faculty with high-performance computing experts, creating and nurturing what has been called the cyberinfrastructure pipeline. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the flow of knowledge. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Once one person gains experience, they can turn around and help someone else,” Janeja says. “It’s about supporting and connecting people with resources and not just about setting up the hardware and software.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Building a high-performance computing workforce</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>The need for fast computers in research is driven in part by a modern deluge of data. For example, NASA estimates that it will soon have accumulated <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers-and-facilities/goddard/nasa-funds-projects-to-make-geosciences-data-more-accessible/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">hundreds of petabytes of Earth science data</a>, from sources such as satellites flying overhead and sensors installed on the ground. Making full use of all that data requires new approaches to computing. While traditional computers generally perform calculations one at a time, <a href="https://www.ibm.com/topics/hpc" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">high-performance computing</a> facilities break up the work between multiple computing nodes and run processes in parallel. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC has its own <a href="https://hpcf.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">high-performance computing facility</a>, which houses computing equipment that can process data significantly faster than a standard laptop. University researchers have employed the fast computers to study topics as diverse as weather modeling, cancer treatment, and flight dynamics.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Learning how to use high-performance computing is not straight-forward,” says Janeja. Users have to gain a good understanding of the infrastructure of the computers, and also hone their skills in identifying the best techniques to take full advantage of that infrastructure.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>People with a good understanding of how these machines and their software work will be in high demand, Janeja adds.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Many modern AI algorithms, which are used by scientific researchers and big tech companies alike, require high-performance computing to operate. “While everyone is running toward the shiny object of AI, many don’t realize that there is a backbone, called cyberinfrastructure, that runs AI,” says Janeja. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Part of Janeja’s goal with the new grant is to educate students who may pursue careers building, maintaining, utilizing, and improving that cyberinfrastructure backbone. She also cares deeply about ensuring diverse groups of people have access to these roles. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“We are trying to democratize the use of cyberinfrastructure and make it accessible to people who have never used it,” Janeja says.</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Jack Suess</strong>, ‘81, M.S. ‘94, UMBC’s vice president of information technology, says he is excited for his division to play a key role in the award, helping shape best practices and build a national cyberinfrastructure support structure. “I look forward to watching how this work informs not just how we support faculty, but how we train and support advanced undergraduates and graduate students to evolve into these roles,” he says.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Tackling environmental challenges</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>While there is no shortage of scientific questions that might be tackled with high-performance computing, Janeja and her colleagues on the new grant will test-run their collaborative initiatives with projects in environmental science. </p>

    <p>Janeja is also director of<a href="https://iharp.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> iHARP</a>, an NSF-funded institute that aims to harness big data and advanced computing tools to better model how climate change will affect the polar regions. As part of the new grant, iHARP and UMCES researchers will partner with cyberinfrastructure professionals to explore environmental science questions, such as in iHARP investigating how to predict the rate of snow melting in Greenland. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Scientists increasingly rely on big data and high-performance computing to understand and predict changes in the environment. As human activities continue to put pressure on natural systems, it will be more important than ever to forge collaborations between researchers and computing experts that advance the science. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I’m excited to leverage high-performance computing to solve real-world problems and make it accessible to students and researchers of all backgrounds,” Janeja says.</p>

<Title>Cracking the code: International collaboration fosters cybersecurity</Title>

    <p>UMBC’s work in strengthening students’ preparedness in cybersecurity defense is proving effective not only on campus, but well beyond. This summer, three UMBC students competed in an international “capture the flag”-style cybersecurity competition in Japan, with one Retriever taking home a victory—and all three bringing back a greater range of expertise. This opportunity helped UMBC students build global relationships and attain more practical experience in cyber defense. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>In August,<strong> Kevin Chen</strong> ’23, computer science, <strong>Zachary Amoss </strong>’24, computer science, and <strong>Leela SaiNadh Gade</strong>, M.P.S. ’24, cybersecurity, competed in the 2023 Country-to-Country Capture the Flag (C2C-CTF) event at the Hiyoshi Campus of Keio University in Yokohama, Japan. The competition—which convened in person for the first time this summer since it began in 2020—brought together 80 students from around the world to team up and complete 25 cybersecurity challenges within 10 hours. Teams were tasked with solving challenges such as identifying hackers in various cyber scenarios or using open-source investigative methods to pinpoint geographic locations of different photographs. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Among the awardees were Chen and his team, which included students from the U.K, China, Japan, and Israel. The team placed fourth overall in C2C-CTF’s main challenge and received the Hitachi award, named after one of the event’s sponsors. Claiming a victory wasn’t the only thing Chen wanted to accomplish at the competition.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“My [goal] was to learn extensively, tackle novel technical obstacles, and engage in international collaboration. I embarked on this journey with the determination for achieving victory, fully aware of the formidable nature of that challenge,” he says. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Code cracking in real time </strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Chen is a member of <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-cyber-dawgs-defend-title-as-mid-atlantic-cyber-champions/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s CyberDawgs team</a> and has been participating in cyber competitions throughout the year in preparation for C2C-CTF. His prep paid off as he helped his team solve the final problem of the competition, a cryptography challenge in which competitors had to correctly guess an image’s location without being provided any identifying information.  </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Inside the images were a set of true images and false images [which] were meant to lead you down a rabbit hole,” Chen explains. “When selecting the true images, we had to piece them together in a certain order to get the code for that challenge.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The team used open-source intelligence methods to solve the problem, such as paying attention to the direction of the sun in an image to narrow down the range of countries, identifying specific landmark clues, and analyzing the images’ metadata. Minutes before the competition’s conclusion, Chen’s team cracked the code, earning them 300 points to secure the win. </p>

    <p>“My entry into the world of cybersecurity began just a year ago. Despite my relative newness to the cyber realm and my position as one of the younger members on the team, I played a pivotal role in addressing key challenges that propelled us into the top four [ranking],” said Chen. “My involvement in the [C2C-CTF] event marked a significant milestone. This allowed me to achieve success on an international stage and served as a gratifying culmination of my trip.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>An international partnership </strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>The annual C2C-CTF competition is organized by the <a href="https://incs-coe.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">International Cyber Security Center of Excellence</a> (INCS-CoE), a global university network dedicated to securing critical systems against cyber threats through research, policy, education, and training. UMBC is one of the founding charter members of the INCS-CoE, which currently includes 12 academic institutions across six countries and recently expanded into Australia, France, and Israel. </p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Karl V. Steiner,</strong> UMBC’s vice president for research and creative achievement, has worked with the group since its creation in 2019, and serves as the INCS-CoE’s 2023 board chair. Steiner joined the UMBC team at Keio University during this year’s C2C-CTF event and shared his pride in seeing UMBC students competing at such a high level on an international stage. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I was extremely proud to see our students compete at the international level. Competing in this competition provided them with a valuable set of new experiences and a set of new friends from across the globe. Each one of our students was fully dedicated to the spirit of competition,” shares Steiner.</p>

    <p>Chen made note of the significance of collaborating with students from around the world, sharing that the experience helped him to “absorb valuable insights into the cyber capabilities and experiences of students globally. The contrasting nature of our experiences…was both enlightening and enriching.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Kazuo Noguchi, executive director of the INCS-CoE added: “ The vision for this event is to provide inclusive and international education and training which can enhance not only new skills, but also, and more importantly, promote international friendship, collaboration, ethics, and teamwork.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>A “real world” approach to cybersecurity </strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Rick Forno</strong>, principal lecturer in computer science and electrical engineering and assistant director of <a href="https://cybersecurity.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s Center for Cybersecurity</a>, explains that competitions like the C2C-CTF provide students with a look into the “real world” of cyber defense.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The competition provides the next generation of cyber defenders an opportunity to tackle technical cybersecurity challenges and gain insight into the global nature of cybersecurity, [along with] the need for effective intercultural collaboration in working toward a common goal,” says Forno. </p>

    <p>Forno also serves as a coach for the UMBC CyberDawgs and adds that “structuring the C2C-CTF event with teams composed of members from different countries is an innovative idea that adds additional real-world ‘flavor’ to what participants will encounter later as cybersecurity professionals around the world.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>CyberDawgs member Zachary Amoss shared that while he has gotten the opportunity to compete with the team at national events, “the opportunity to represent UMBC on the global stage [at C2C-CTF] was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I highly recommend all current UMBC students, especially those who are already in cybersecurity spaces such as the CyberDawgs, to compete in next year’s event.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Leela SaiNadh Gade added that the competition has been “an enriching experience that expanded my understanding immensely. The learning I acquired from this event will serve as an invaluable asset in my future endeavors.”</p>

<Title>Retriever Essentials student team is runner-up in a nationwide competition to address world hunger</Title>

    <p><a href="https://retrieveressentials.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Retriever Essentials</a>, represented by student volunteers <strong>Nhi Nguyen </strong>’25, biochemistry and bioinformatics, and <strong>Ben Bhattarai </strong>’23, biology and psychology, is a <a href="https://www.wilburellis.com/innovation-award" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">second place finalist</a> in the 2023 Wilbur Ellis Innovation Award. Announced at the end of September, the honorable mention award—given to only four schools—recognizes the student teams with the most innovative strategies for providing food for a growing world population.</p>

    <p>Nguyen and Bhattarai’s proposal aimed to address the water scarcity in agriculture which affects the ability to feed a growing world population sustainably. Their project proposed the use of halophytic (salt-tolerant) algae to desalinate saltwater in order to increase freshwater availability to enhance agricultural yields and to create highly nutritious food products. Nguyen and Bhattarai believe their project also may help resolve some of the impacts of global warming on food production and transportation, including the growth of algae; limited fossil fuels; and ocean acidification due to high carbon dioxide. Both hope to continue their research into ways to eliminate food insecurity.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The $5,000 award for second place will be used to help buy food for the Retriever Essentials pantry, and help kickstart research on the algae, says <strong>Ariel Barbosa</strong>, program coordinator and a master’s student in community leadership.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The students’ work was a collaborative endeavor during the spring 2023 semester, with input from UMBC faculty in the sciences and public health: <strong>Lauren Clay</strong>, associate professor and chair, emergency health services; <strong>Erle Ellis</strong>, professor, geography and environmental systems; <strong>Andrea Kalfoglou</strong>, associate professor, sociology, anthropology, and public health; and <strong>Stephen Miller</strong>, associate professor, biological sciences. </p>

    <p>“We worked so hard on this proposal,” says Nguyen. “The contest was a chance to share my knowledge and creativity…to go out of our own bubbles and be confident with whatever we have to offer to help the community.” </p>

This experience also motivates us to continue our research in innovative ways. <Title>UMBC joins collaboration to create new STEM education, research center at Arecibo Observatory site in Puerto Rico</Title>

    <p>This week UMBC was named as one of four institutions chosen to work together on a National Science Foundation-funded project to establish a new science educational center at the Arecibo Observatory site in Puerto Rico. NSF will contribute more than $5 million over five years to establish the multidisciplinary center, called the Arecibo Center for Culturally Relevant and Inclusive Science Education, Computational Skills, and Community Engagement (Arecibo C3).</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The center is expected to open in early 2024 and will include a research laboratory and a hands-on, interactive science center open to the public.</p>

    <p><strong>Patricia Ordóñez</strong>,M.S. ’10, Ph.D. ’12, computer science, an associate professor in information systems, will lead UMBC’s contributions to the project. As part of the Arecibo C3 collaboration, Ordóñez is organizing a Women in Data Science Puerto Rico conference, as well as several workshops in data science that will be held both online and in person. One of the workshops will prepare attendees to participate in the<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhoAs2X0N7A" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> 2024 Women in Data Science Worldwide datathon</a>. Other workshops will recruit mothers and daughters to learn coding together, and will teach new skills to women and other participants who already code.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Several UMBC graduate and undergraduate students and staff members have been involved in developing and testing the workshop materials.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“My passion has always been to increase the number of Latinas in computing,” says Ordóñez, who, before joining the faculty of UMBC, was a member of the computer science department at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras. “There are too few of us in the field—creating inclusive programs from Arecibo C3 will help us bridge that gap.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The other grant awardees are Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras, and the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. In addition to data science programming, Arecibo C3 will offer a suite of activities, including explorations of biodiversity and how to identify species using short segments of DNA. The Arecibo C3 team will also advance research to explore how STEM teaching can be enhanced through the presentation of data in audio, tactile, and other sensory forms, to increase accessibility.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The new educational center builds on the great scientific, educational, and cultural legacy of the Arecibo Observatory and is closely aligned with NSF’s goal to create STEM opportunities everywhere,” said James L. Moore III, NSF assistant director for STEM Education, in a <a href="https://new.nsf.gov/news/nsf-announces-over-5m-funding-create-new-stem" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">press release</a>. “The center aims to create new opportunities for STEM education, exploration, discovery, engagement and participation of students, scientists and researchers in various STEM disciplines ranging from astronomy and radio science to biological, computer and natural sciences in Puerto Rico and beyond.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Ordóñez credits the talents of the whole Arecibo C3 team with turning what feels like a dream of hers into a reality. “We recognize the responsibility of what we are doing and we are going to work very hard to create the environment of inclusive excellence in Arecibo that everyone deserves, so that everyone sees they have a place in STEM,” she says.</p>

    <p>Mold on your bread or bathroom tiles can be a nuisance. Mold in a scientific lab can be a marvel.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Up close,<a href="https://youtu.be/IQ8Br_sUfI8" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> the growth of mold</a> becomes living artwork—white, feathery shoots morphing into undulating waves of color. And molds can be amazingly useful.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“They are used to ferment food, make laundry detergent enzymes, and help produce pharmaceuticals,” explains <strong>Garrett Hill</strong> ’24, biochemistry and molecular biology, who has been working with molds in the research lab of UMBC chemical engineering professor<a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/mark-marten/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> <strong>Mark Marten</strong></a> for more than four years. “It’s surprising how ubiquitous they are in industry.”</p>

    <p>Molds (along with mushrooms) belong to a group of organisms more technically known as filamentous fungi. One of the oldest and largest living organisms in the world is a filamentous fungus, nicknamed the “<a href="https://www.opb.org/television/programs/oregon-field-guide/article/oregon-humongous-fungus/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Humongous Fungus</a>,” that has likely been spreading across the Blue Mountains in eastern Oregon for more than 2,000 years, and has come to occupy an area of more than 2,000 acres.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The Humongous Fungus grew (and grew) through an enormous network of interconnected thread-like structures called hyphae that gather and share vital nutrients.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Networks—of a different sort—are also vitally important to the students studying fungi in Marten’s lab. Lab members, from high schoolers to Ph.D. students, work together on projects. Marten offers advice not only on research questions, but also on skills such as communication. Support flows in from the university, in the form of research awards, scholar programs, and more. It’s tied together with a simple philosophy that helps everyone flourish: “Mentorship is the magic ingredient,” Marten says.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>High school research leads to UMBC</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Hill found his way to <a href="https://martenlab.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Marten’s lab</a> through a program in nearby Howard County Public Schools called the Biotechnology Career Academy. As part of the program, he earned credit for conducting research in the lab. After high school graduation, he enrolled at UMBC and has continued his work in Marten’s lab every year since.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“UMBC has a culture that emphasizes supporting students,” says Hill. “This was something that initially attracted me to the school, and something that I’ve absolutely experienced during my time here.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>In Marten’s lab, Hill has been working on research that investigates how a fungus called <em>Aspergillus nidulans</em> repairs damaged cell walls. Armed with a better understanding of the complicated cascade of biochemical reactions triggered when the fungal cell wall is damaged, scientists could possibly manipulate the process to use molds more effectively (or in the case of harmful molds, eradicate them more effectively.)</p>

    <p>To untangle the hidden and complicated inner workings of the fungus, the researchers deploy an arsenal of analytical tools and methods.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“When I started in the lab, I spent a lot of time learning the background and standard lab techniques,” Hill says. “But now that I’ve had a few years to acclimate, I have the foundation to support my own project.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>As part of that project, Hill has been investigating how to use the<a href="https://www.nobelprize.org/uploads/2020/10/popular-chemistryprize2020.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Nobel Prize-winning gene editing tool called CRISPR</a> to create fungal cells with inner elements that light up. The light provides a beacon for researchers to track how those elements move as the cell experiences stress or initiates repairs.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The sense of project ownership has been one of the most rewarding parts of my research experience,” Hill says. “When my graduate mentor and I first discussed the possibility of leading my own project, I had a brief moment of doubt. But I chose to not listen to that voice.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Networks nourish growth</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Hill says he was attracted to the beauty and power of science from a young age, even though no one in his family had a scientific career. UMBC has provided the resources and counsel to help him chart his path.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Within Marten’s lab, Hill says more experienced researchers were always willing to help. When Hill first joined as a high schooler, fellow lab member <strong>Ryland Spence </strong>’19, biological sciences, who is now a medical student at Brown University, trained him on techniques.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Mentorship has been so important for me, so I am always happy to provide mentorship to others whenever I get the chance,” Spence says. “A supportive environment that values diversity is very much a part of UMBC.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Marten himself also provided enormous guidance and support. “Dr. Marten has been the strongest mentor I’ve had, helping me even before I came to UMBC,” Hill says. “He’s taught me not only about fungus, but also about how to think like a researcher, how to present research, and how to be a good student.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>University-wide programs provided Hill with additional research support. He was awarded multiple<a href="https://ur.umbc.edu/ura/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Undergraduate Research Awards</a> (URAs), which provide financial assistance for research projects and opportunities to practice skills such as presenting research.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Hill is also part of the nationally renowned<a href="https://meyerhoff.umbc.edu/about/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Meyerhoff Scholar Program</a>, which seeks to increase diversity among future leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by supporting students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. or combined M.D./Ph.D. in STEM and are interested in the advancement of minorities in those fields.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“A lot of my best friends are from the program,” says Hill. “It’s been great to have that community.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Now that he is applying to graduate schools, Hill says the Meyerhoff program provides detailed guidance through the process. “They have been an invaluable resource, and a rock really. They make sure I know what I need to do now to ensure I have opportunities in the future.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>A closing chapter and a new beginning</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>As the fall semester of his senior year kicks off, Hill says that he’s feeling confident and excited.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I find myself frequently looking back on how I felt on my first day in the lab, during my first lab meeting presentation, or during my first day of classes, and realizing how much I’ve grown these past few years,” he says. “What once used to really shake me, I am now able to do with confidence—that tells me a lot about what I’ve gained from my research experience.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>As Hill gears up for grad school, he is passing the baton to other UMBC students like <strong>Matthew Quintanilla</strong> ’27, chemical engineering, a first-year student whose journey shares many similarities with Hill’s. The first in his family to pursue a scientific career, Quintanilla also started work in Marten’s lab as a high-schooler and decided to enroll at UMBC. In Marten’s lab, Quintanilla is working with Ph.D. student <strong>Alex Doan</strong>, who attended the same high school and embraced the opportunity to mentor fellow students.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It’s been great catching up on high school news, but more importantly helping students grow,” says Doan.</p>

    <p>Quintanilla is also a URA-recipient and Meyerhoff Scholar, and says he is excited for the new school year.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I am eager to start my academic career at UMBC, meet many others, and integrate my knowledge from courses into my lab work,” he says.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Matthew and Garrett are both really talented individuals,” says Marten. “Having them in the lab has been a win-win situation.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>April Householder </strong>’95, the director of undergraduate research and prestigious scholarships at UMBC, looks at Marten’s lab as a microcosm of the vibrant UMBC research environment. “These two students—Garrett and Matthew—represent two ends of the research spectrum. One is just getting started, and the other is a four-time URA Scholar,” she says.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“The support these students receive from the mentorship in their lab is invaluable, but also as important is the peer-to-peer support they will get from one another. It’s this type of academic community building that gets student researchers excited about being a part of UMBC.”</p>

<Title>Cybersecurity expert Richard Forno appointed an honorary international professor</Title>

    <p><strong>Richard Forno</strong>, assistant director of <a href="https://cybersecurity.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s Center for Cybersecurity</a> and a principal lecturer in the department of computer science and electrical engineering, has been appointed an honorary international professor in the School of Science and Engineering at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH), one of Mexico’s oldest universities.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Forno joins a select group of academics who have been named honorary international professors at UAEH. The recipients, some of whom have received some of the highest honors in their fields, are chosen for their overall academic and professional contributions.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The investiture ceremony coincided with the university’s two-week-long international book fair, held in late August and organized this year around the theme of cybersecurity. Over two days, Forno delivered five talks, met students and faculty, and spoke with university leaders about areas of possible collaboration between UMBC and UAEH.</p>

    <p>Countries around the world share the challenge of maintaining cybersecurity in an interconnected and ever-evolving digital landscape. In his main<a href="https://cybersecurity.umbc.edu/forno-mexico-speech/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> lecture</a>, Forno emphasized the importance of education and interdisciplinary collaboration to combat cybersecurity threats.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Forno says the formal investiture ceremony, held in one of Hidalgo’s oldest structures, was a particularly meaningful event for him. “It was a humbling personal experience and certainly a professional honor that I will not soon forget,” he says.</p>

<Title>U.S. News ranks UMBC among the nation&#8217;s best colleges in undergraduate research, teaching, innovation, and value</Title>

    <p>UMBC continues to show its strengths in undergraduate research, innovation, value, teaching programs, and several other areas highlighted in the <a href="https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2023–24 <em>U.S. News and World Report</em> Best Colleges undergraduate rankings</a>. This year, the university moved up in the national rankings in numerous categories, showcasing UMBC’s growth in several key areas. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The 2023–24<em> U.S. News</em> college rankings, released today, were calculated using 19 key measures of academic quality, evaluating nearly 1,500 four-year bachelor’s degree-granting institutions in the country. For the second consecutive year, UMBC has moved up several slots on the list of Best National Universities (tied at #133). UMBC also climbed 38 slots in the category of best value schools, coming in at #69 nationally. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The university remains a leader in undergraduate teaching programs, ranking #12 nationally. UMBC also maintains its longstanding position as one of the nation’s most innovative universities, ranking #15 this year. </p>

    <p>Since receiving a <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-ascends-to-the-nations-highest-level-as-a-research-university/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Research 1 Carnegie designation in 2022</a>, UMBC has advanced nearly 20 slots in the undergraduate research and creative projects rankings, now nationally ranked at #27. Those research efforts culminated in UMBC students receiving <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/goldwater-scholars-kanjarpane-and-viswanathan/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">prestigious Goldwater</a> and <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/gates-cambridge-scholarship/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Gates Cambridge scholarship</a> awards within the last year. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“This impressive jump shows that internal and external stakeholders have really taken notice of the incredible work that our undergraduates are engaged in,” says <strong>April Householder</strong> <strong>’95</strong>, visual and performing arts, UMBC’s director of undergraduate research and prestigious scholarships. “The faculty and staff at UMBC nurture a culture of research across all disciplines, supporting academic excellence from the humanities to the sciences.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>UMBC remains within the nation’s top-100 public universities, ranking #70 overall, and also moving up to #87 in the nation as one of the best colleges for veterans. While the rankings are primarily university-wide, they also include top-100 recognition for several specific undergraduate programs. The university advanced to #82 in <a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/undergraduate/computer-science-bs/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">computer science programs</a>, sharing the ranking with other universities such as Auburn University, University of Georgia, and the University of Delaware. In <a href="https://coeit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">engineering programs</a>, UMBC also ascended to #90 nationally, joined by Howard University, Oklahoma State University, and the University of Alabama. </p>

<Title>Need a fun activity? UMBC iFest delivers with 200+ student organizations and tons to explore&#160;</Title>

    <p>As waves of students swarmed the Retriever Activity Center last week, senior <strong>Micah Polsky</strong> of the UMBC Crafting Club quietly stood knitting a pale blue merino wool sock with three tiny needles. Behind Polsky, on a presentation board the UMBC Crafters made to lure prospective new club members, was pinned the mate to the sock in progress.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Knitting is a lot of trial and error and a surprising amount of math…but it can be very relaxing or very stimulating depending on the kinds of projects you make,” says Polsky, an environmental science major. Together with club president <strong>Emily Bolt</strong> (a senior chemical engineering major and avid embroiderer), they talked yarns and technique with students shopping for new clubs and organizations to join at this year’s Involvement Fest.</p>

    <p>Beyond a meet and greet, and far beyond posters and tchotchke giveaways, iFest is a key moment for students looking to meet new people and try something new. An estimated 2,000 students attended this year’s event, according to <strong>Tori Ciorra</strong>, assistant director for student organizations. With <a href="https://umbc.edu/life-on-campus/clubs-activities/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">more than 200 UMBC clubs</a> representing everything from career pathways to religion, to service, recreation, sports, and more—not to mention an open door for students to create new orgs of their own—there is something for everyone to enjoy.</p>

    <p>“Involvement Fest is an exciting opportunity for new and returning students to join a student organization and find a community where they can foster new relationships and experiences. Each organization is incredibly unique and creates a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved outside of the classroom,” said Ciorra, who was pleased to see the crowds of interested students. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I am always in awe of the organizations that our students have created, and watching the creative ways they market their organization. Hearing leaders talk about the number of sign-ups they received and their excitement for the year is extremely rewarding and sets a wonderful tone for the rest of the year.” </p>

    <h2><strong>A smorgasbord of choices</strong></h2>
    
    
    
    <p>Surveying one of two huge rooms of club displays, first-year computer science student <strong>Emma Popoko</strong> flipped through the event program to pinpoint tables she especially wanted to visit. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Film club could be interesting. And I’m definitely interested in the African Student Association because I’m African…and possibly the <a href="https://www.nsbe.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Society of Black Engineers</a>,” she said. Her added motivation to be there? “So I don’t just stay in my dorm all day. I can interact with people and get a feel for the place and feel like I’m part of the community and not just here for classes.”</p>

Fowler, a transfer student, helped re-name the group recently to be more inclusive.  “I love the idea that I can change the world, so being able to have a tangible change on something like a university…it does mean a lot to me,” said Fowler.
    
    
    
    <p>Sophomore <strong>Ayan Chaudry</strong>, a biology major, joined a couple of clubs in his first year at UMBC, but came to iFest specifically looking for something new—possibly a pre-med fraternity. Taking part in student organizations—especially as a commuter student—made his first year feel “less lonely.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I know some people like to just go home and back and forth to school, but I feel like if you stay on campus a bit longer…there’s more to it than just studying,” he said.</p>

It’s so soft!” Parke raved.
    
    
    
    <p>As folks passed the table for The Garden, a physical gardening space on campus that also grows food for Retriever Essentials and other partners, club president and senior biology/psychology major <strong>Eli Gooding</strong> handed out lollipops and made a solid case for why getting one’s hands dirty—while growing veggies, that is—is such a great form of self-care.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“For me, gardening is really therapeutic and it’s how I relieve stress,” said Gooding. “It’s really good to have a hobby.”</p>

<Title>School&#8217;s in Session</Title>

    <p>The feel of a pen as it clicks open and closed, pointed for note taking (or probably more likely the feel of an electronic stylus). The sound of pages rustling in a notebook during the first class of the day (or more likely the sound of keys clacking on a laptop). The smell of a new textbook as it opens for the first time (or probably more likely still the laptop thing). No matter what it looks like, the start of a new school year is officially here! This year, UMBC welcomes a pack of over 3,800 new Retrievers as they embark on the black and gold journey of a lifetime. </p>

    <p>Last weekend, new Retrievers bundled up their belongings and arrived on campus to unpack in their new home. Once clothes were in drawers, posters were hung, and minifridges were stocked, students and families headed to <a href="https://welcomeweek.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Retriever Fest</a> to learn more about campus resources and departments…and maybe pet a farm animal or two. After saying goodbye to families, students settled into their rooms and then got to know one another over games and a fireworks display. </p>

    <p>During <a href="https://youtube.com/live/0ltA3zQoJ_k?feature=share" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Convocation</a> on Tuesday, new Retrievers received a UMBC pin, officially signifying the start of their UMBC career. Incoming UMBC Student Government Association (SGA) president <strong>Musa Jafri ’24</strong>, <strong>political science</strong>, assured the attendees saying, “I know being a new student can be overwhelming at times. Remember that it is okay to ask for help. You are part of this community, and we want you to know that you belong here, and we want you to succeed.” </p>
