<Title>Meyerhoff Scholars Program celebrates 500th Ph.D.</Title>

    <p>This spring, the <a href="https://meyerhoff.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Scholars Program</a> at UMBC celebrates a landmark achievement: 500 program graduates have earned a Ph.D.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The milestone highlights the program’s success as the nation’s original model for increasing diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Grounded in high expectations and robust support, Meyerhoff Scholars consistently go on to excel in top graduate programs and lead in academia, industry, and government while mentoring the next generation. UMBC has maintained its position as the national leader in producing <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-leads-nation-in-producing-african-american-undergraduates-who-pursue-m-d-ph-d-s/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Black M.D./Ph.D. graduates</a>: Between 2014 and 2024, UMBC alumni accounted for 15 percent of all such dual-degree recipients nationwide, far outpacing any other institution. UMBC is also the leader in graduating Black students who <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-graduates-more-black-students-who-go-on-to-earn-doctorates-in-natural-sciences-and-engineering-than-any-u-s-college/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">go on to earn Ph.D.s</a> in the life sciences, math and computer sciences, and engineering.</p>

    <p><strong>Joseph Washington</strong> ’97, mechanical engineering, a member of the fourth Meyerhoff cohort (M4), embodies this trajectory. A first-generation college student, he initially considered trade school after a knee injury derailed his plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. The Meyerhoff scholarship changed his path. In particular, Selection Weekend for admitted Meyerhoff Scholars and Summer Bridge, intensive group programming prior to the scholars’ first UMBC semester, affirmed his identity and potential: “The most important message I internalized from the Meyerhoff program was that I can be Black and intelligent,” he recalls.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Washington earned a master’s degree before returning to UMBC for his Ph.D. Today, he serves as an assistant teaching professor at UMBC at the Universities at Shady Grove. He mentors students informally, advises the UMBC chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and creates space for Meyerhoff Scholars to discuss graduate school and careers. “UMBC has always felt like home,” he says. “I would not be here if not for the Meyerhoff Scholars Program.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h2><strong>A family tradition</strong></h2>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Sadella Santos</strong> ’12, chemical engineering, M20, and her sister <strong>Melissa</strong> <strong>Santos</strong> ’12, chemical engineering, M19, also credit the program with shaping their journeys. Sadella, a senior scientist at <a href="https://www.exponent.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Exponent, Inc.</a> with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, values the emphasis on community. “Academic success is a collective effort, rather than individual competition,” she says. “At work, I champion the message that diverse perspectives are necessary to drive scientific progress.” She pays it forward by reviewing abstracts for the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) and hosting lab visits to expose high school students to possible careers.</p>

    <p>Melissa, who earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering followed by a J.D., applies problem-solving and adaptability skills honed through Meyerhoff to her legal career. She recently participated in a panel for McNair Scholars on summer research experiences. “Community and network are important,” she notes. “Surround yourself with people who will support you but also challenge you to grow.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Meyerhoff scholars often refer to themselves as family—and that’s especially true for the Santoses. <strong>Justin Santos</strong> ’17, biochemistry and molecular biology, M25, is the third scholar in the family. He is completing his M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience at Emory University this spring and will begin residency in emergency medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. He mentors students pursuing clinical-scientist careers and assists with ABRCMS abstract reviews. “High-quality, comprehensive mentorship” was invaluable to him, and he works to provide that same guidance to others.</p>
    
    
    
    <h2><strong>Reaching back to pay it forward</strong></h2>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Naomi Mburu</strong> ’18, M26, chemical engineering, was <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbcs-naomi-mburu-receives-first-rhodes-scholarship-in-school-history/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s first Rhodes Scholar</a>, attending Oxford University on one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scholarships. She earned a D.Phil. in engineering science from the University of Oxford and today serves as lead analyst at <a href="https://fas.energy/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fusion Advisory Services</a>, providing analysis of the fusion industry to a wide range of stakeholders. Meyerhoff pushed her beyond her comfort zone into leadership roles and strengthened her public speaking and networking skills, she says. She now reviews scholarship essays for UMBC students and organizes summer internships to bring diverse talent into the fusion energy field. “Supporting the next generation is so important,” she says. “I have only come this far myself with the help of my own mentors.”</p>

    <p>These alumni illustrate the program’s lasting influence. Meyerhoff Scholars do not simply succeed—they reach back, creating opportunities and building communities for current students and early-career researchers. The model’s impact now extends even further: universities including Penn State, UNC-Chapel Hill, UC Berkeley, Stony Brook, and others have adapted key elements of the Meyerhoff approach with support from funders such as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Simons Foundation. The Howard Hughes Medical Institutehas also been a long-term supporter of Meyerhoff and its replications.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>With more than 2,200 undergraduates supported to date and a national reputation for producing leaders committed to diversity in STEM, the 500th Ph.D. stands as compelling proof of the Meyerhoff model’s effectiveness. As alumni advance in their fields and invest in those who follow, the Meyerhoff Scholars Program continues to change lives one by one, transforming the face of American science through excellence, community, and a powerful ripple effect that will benefit generations to come.</p>

<Title>Eight Retrievers awarded prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowships</Title>

    <p>Eight UMBC students and alumni have been awarded the prestigious 2026 <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/grfp-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship-program" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship</a> (GRFP), a highly competitive honor that supports outstanding graduate students in STEM disciplines. This year’s large cohort of Retriever recipients demonstrates the university’s commitment to fostering research excellence and preparing students to become leaders in their fields.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The recipients are already making waves with their work. <strong>Caly Ferguson</strong> ’26, mechanical engineering, was recently named to the <a href="https://umbc.edu/quick-posts/ferguson-nsbe-25-under-25/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Society of Black Engineers’ “25 Under 25” list</a> and received the <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/goldwater-scholarships-2025/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Barry Goldwater Scholarship</a> in 2025. He has been working on developing an affordable and dextrous <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/where-bright-ideas-come-to-life/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">prosthetic forearm and hand</a> with <strong>Ramana Vinjamuri</strong>, associate professor of computer science and electrical engineering. </p>

    <p><strong>Lesley Hernandez</strong> ’25, biochemistry, will use the GRFP to support her doctoral studies in biomedical science at the University of Michigan. At UMBC, she studied HIV replication with <strong>Michael Summers</strong>, professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Both Ferguson and Hernandez are Meyerhoff Scholars, and Hernandez also <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/art-of-scientists/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">balances her science with a passion for Latin dance</a>. </p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Peter Allen Wilschke</strong> ’24, economics and political science, is heading to graduate school after completing a two-year research assistant position at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, DC. His research at UMBC on the complex relationships between political factors and fiscal policy <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/peter-wilschke-celebrates-national-research-accomplishments/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">garnered national attention</a>.</p>

    <p><strong>Sydney Braithwaite</strong>, who completed her bachelor’s in forensic chemistry at Towson University, will bring her fellowship to UMBC for graduate study with <strong>Lee Blaney</strong>, professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering. <strong>Meredith Morse</strong> ’25, chemical engineering; <strong>Shefra Shah</strong> ’24, biochemistry and molecular biology; and <strong>Terra Miley</strong> ’25, chemical engineering, are all conducting doctoral work at the University of Delaware; <strong>Salman Mirza</strong> ’25, mechanical engineering, is pursuing a Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University.</p>

    <p>The substantial fellowship provides three years of financial support, including an annual living stipend and funds for tuition and fees, and the recipients can take their fellowship to any institution in the U.S. That flexibility makes it easier for students to pursue exactly the research they are passionate about with faculty who share their enthusiasm, regardless of the level of resources available at the host institution. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>These eight fellowships are a testament to the drive and talent of UMBC’s graduates as they take on new challenges along their research journeys. Each is in a strong position to make their mark on scientific discovery and innovation across the country.</p>

<Title>Finding the harmony within art and science</Title>

    <p>At UMBC, undergraduate students are redefining the boundaries of scientific and artistic pursuits. From a chemical engineer who graces the stage with his cello to a bioinformatician who paints and a biochemist who ignites the dance floor with Latin rhythms, these scholars thrive in an environment that celebrates their diverse passions. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>This spring, several U-RISE Scholars—the National Institutes of Heath’s Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement—shared their multidisciplinary interests with <strong>Jacqueline King</strong>, associate director of the U-RISE program, and <strong>Mariano Sto. Domingo</strong>, associate director of research and evaluation within the Meyerhoff Scholars Program. As a result, King and Sto. Domingo started researching how the arts and science blend in these students’ lives, and presented their findings at an academic conference this spring. What they learned was that here, rigorous research and creative expression intertwine, fostering a vibrant community where students explore every dimension of their talents.</p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Ajeetha Aruchandran</strong>, a seniorbioinformatics and computational biology major, studies how the neural tube—a precursor to the spinal cord—forms in zebrafish embryos with <strong><a href="https://brewsterlab.umbc.edu/meet-the-lab/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Rachel Brewster</a></strong>, professor of biological sciences.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The development of the embryos, which are transparent, “is a very visual process,” Aruchandran says. Her artistic skills have allowed her to generate beautiful and accurate diagrams that communicate her research, she says. “When you’re not able to communicate science well, then the meaning is lost. So I think my art has really strengthened that aspect of my science. The connection has surprised and delighted me, because for a long time I thought my science and my art had to be separate.”</p>

    <p>Aruchandran began with drawing, but has transitioned to painting. “There’s something so special about the freeness of a brushstroke,” she says. The two pursuits “create balance in my life, because when I need more structure, I have research and the scientific method, but when I need to feel more free, I have my art.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Rhythm and harmony</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Lesley Hernandez</strong>, a senior majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology, is hunting for factors that regulate how viruses like HIV multiply in cells with <strong><a href="http://www.hhmi.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Michael Summers</a></strong>, University Distinguished Professor of Cchemistry and Bbiochemistry. The ultimate goal is to disrupt the viruses’ replication. She also loves to dance. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“My family is from the Dominican Republic, so I grew up surrounded by music and movement. I decided to embrace that part of my culture at UMBC by joining the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/umbc_hlsu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Latin Dance Club</a>, where I could perform and share my love for dance with others,” Hernandez says. “I love incorporating dance into the workspace by sharing a laugh with my peers and dancing between experiments.  It fosters stronger connections and creates an enjoyable work environment.”</p>

    <p>And, when the science gets intense, “I can go to my dance class and come back with a refreshed mind,” Hernandez says. Her attention to detail benefits both her science and her dance. Being “a calculated person” helps her pick up rhythmically complex dance moves more quickly, for example. Both activities also require creativity, whether in trouble-shooting an experiment that’s not working or coming up with new dance routines.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>In the Summers lab, “We are all really into science, but what is fun for you outside of that? Everyone in my lab has their own outlet, and that is encouraged,” Hernandez says.   </p>
    
    
    
    <p>For<strong> Daisy Parry</strong>, a senior majoring in biological sciences, that outlet is singing. “I’ve had a lot of interests that have come and gone, but singing has been a constant thread throughout my life. It’s very important and very centering to me,” Parry says. Her music minor has created dedicated times that provide a respite from the demands of science, she says.</p>

    <p>Parry is a member of The Stilettos, an all-woman a cappella group at UMBC, and her church choir. She arranges songs for The Stilettos to perform, which permits taking some creative license with the original work. “I like changing up the rhythms and dynamics to add depth to the music, and I think’s encouraged me to think a bit outside the box with my science, too, in terms of trying new experimental techniques.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>For now, her work on cell migration in fruit fly embryos with <strong><a href="https://starzlab.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Michelle Starz-Gaiano</a></strong>, professor of biological sciences, her classes, and her music keep her busy, but Parry is looking forward to pursuing a master’s in public health after UMBC. She emphasizes how the concept of harmony—so central to music—carries over to the kind of work she wants to do. Factors such as research, clinical care, public policy, economics, the environment, and how they intersect are all relevant to public health outcomes, she explains.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>‘It makes me whole’</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Ella Reinders</strong>, a junior biological sciences major, also likes to tackle projects—scientific or artistic—from many angles. Watercolor and acrylic paints, sketching and drawing, handicrafts, sewing, and ballet have all captured her interest. “There are all different kinds of random things that I think are fun,” Reinders says.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>In the lab, “I am able to come up with different ways of thinking about something because I’ve taken so many different approaches,” she says. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Reinders does behavioral research with <strong><a href="https://legateslab.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Tara LeGates</a></strong>, assistant professor of biological sciences. The lab needed a new piece of equipment, but it was too expensive to buy off the shelf. “So I decided, why not create our own?” Reinders recalls. </p>

    <p>She sketched it out, learned how to render it on the computer, how to 3D print it at the UMBC library, and then how to wire it. “And now I’ve actually been using it, and it works,” she says. “It was really exciting. I love turning something from my brain into something that I’m actually holding.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>There is also direct overlap between Reinders’ science and her art. “I’ve done imaging of neurons, and being able to turn them into this piece of artwork that you want to hang on your wall is really exciting. Moving through life with both scientific and artistic interests just makes everything more interesting and feels like a way to express all sides of myself.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>For<strong> Joshua Dayie</strong>, a senior chemical engineering major, both discipline and creativity are required for his research and his art—playing the cello. “You really have to strike a balance between them to make any meaningful progress,” he says. Practicing cello requires hours of repetition, until technical passages flow out of his fingers from muscle memory alone. In the lab, sometimes experiments must be repeated many times before they’re successful—that’s the discipline. </p>

    <p>Dayie applies that discipline to his research with <strong><a href="https://martenlab.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Mark Marten</a></strong>, professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering, on characterizing signaling pathways in fungi that activate in response to environmental stressors. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Then comes the creativity. Only after someone masters the fundamentals can they explore nuance in the tone or emotion conveyed on the cello, Dayie says. Similarly, in science “a lot of the innovation that you generate is really only meaningful after you’ve spent a lot of time understanding the core scientific concepts behind everything.”  </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I think that’s been the most surprising thing: The creativity that comes from a very sound foundation of discipline is something that is translatable pretty much anywhere,” Dayie reflects. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>As an added bonus, “Music has been a really nice outlet for me to use a different part of my brain, just to express myself in a different way,” he adds. “I feel like it makes me a little bit more whole.”</p>

<Title>Retrievers learn the art and heart of cooking Salvadoran food at True Grit&#8217;s Test Kitchen</Title>

    <p>“Recipes are like an address to a homeland, but they’re also very personal to your own story,” said Karla T. Vasquez, author of <a href="https://salvisoul.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>The SalviSoul Cookbook</em></a>, in True Grit’s Test Kitchen. <strong>Celia Bonilla</strong>, a business technology administration sophomore, grinned and nodded—the addresses for her own recipes come from El Salvador and Maryland. Bonilla joined other UMBC students earlier this fall for the “More than Pupusas” cooking demonstration, sponsored by the Dresher Center for the Humanities, to learn how to cook Salvadoran street food.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Bonilla sat at one of two tables set with brown butcher paper with her classmates, <strong>Stephania Fonseca</strong>, a social work sophomore, and <strong>Jeffrey Molina Soriano</strong>, a computer science junior. They also have roots in Maryland and El Salvador. “Pastelitos [pah-steh-lee-tos] means little pie and it’s the Salvadoran version of empanadas [em-pah-nah-dahs],” said Vasquez. “Empanadas are well known all over Latin America. Greeks, Italians, and other Europeans make meat pies, too.”</p>

    <p>Like many Salvadoran students at UMBC, their journeys to UMBC are as complex as the ingredients they use for this meal. “Sometimes Hispanic Heritage Month events portray Latinx culture as a monolith, often focusing on the Caribbean or Mexican American experience,” said <strong>Courtney C. Hobson</strong> ’10, M.A. ’14, history, program manager at the <a href="https://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">James T. and Virginia M. Dresher Center for the Humanities</a>. “I grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where a significant part of the Latinx immigrant community comes from Central America, specifically El Salvador. Many of our Latinx students have roots in Central America—I wanted to organize an event that celebrated the rich culture they represent.”</p>

    <p>“I came here when I was six years old from El Salvador,” said Bonilla, who attended the event as part of an assignment for the <a href="https://mlli.umbc.edu/spanish-courses/#:~:text=SPAN%20304-,Spanish%20for%20Heritage%20Spanish%20Speakers,-I%20%C2%A0(Exclusively%20for" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Spanish for Heritage Spanish Speakers</a> class. Students must participate in two on-campus and two off-campus cultural events that celebrate Hispanic/Latinx culture. While Bonilla is familiar with campus events as the parent of a UMBC alum <strong>Jasmine Esmeralda Bonilla</strong> ’21, chemical engineering, this event felt different. “This class gives me a chance to learn more about my culture and language by engaging with people from various countries and age groups.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Culinary traditions</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Most students at the event said they had eaten pupusas (puh-poo-suhz) at home or at a restaurant. This flat corn flour cake, stuffed with cheese, beans, and sometimes meat is the national dish of El Salvador. “I have an aunt who is from El Salvador. She taught my mom, and then my mom taught me how to make pupusas with my sister,” said Fonseca. “My dad is from El Salvador, and my mom is from Mexico. We learned to make pupusas together as a family. So it became a typical food from my home.”</p>

    <p>As students kneaded the dough into a palm-sized disc, filled it with sautéed mushrooms, and pinched the edges to seal the pastelitos, they also shared what food meant to them in the context of their family and student life. A clear theme emerged, culinary traditions can extend beyond the kitchen. “We have the Philly pretzel factory. I’ve never been able to find a soft pretzel as good as the Philly Pretzel Factory,” said <strong>Ashley Gutshall</strong> about her hometown of Royersford, Pennsylvania. Gutshall, a history and Spanish sophomore, shares, “It’s our family tradition to get Philly soft pretzels after doctor’s appointments.”</p>

    <p>Snack routines also create taste memories. “I was born in El Salvador during the Civil War [1980-1992] but was raised in Los Angeles. I would often fantasize about the routines my family would have had if they had been able to stay in their homeland,” said Vasquez, as she cooked down strawberries that she used to sweeten a large container of water filled with chan seeds—similar to chia seeds in texture and nutrition. “Fresco de chan satisfied that question for me because it’s a drink students have after school,” said Vasquez. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Food as a cultural bridge</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Dishes are a fingerprint of a family’s traditions and tastes that can also serve as a timeline marking the evolution of ingredients locally and globally. “When my mom hears of these new trending food ingredients like chia seeds or quinoa,” says Vasquez, “she argues that they have been used in El Salvador and Central American communities for a long time.” </p>

    <p>Whether savory or sweet, the names of foods and spices across Latin America, and the dishes they inspire, are rooted in indigenous, African, and European languages and culinary traditions often fused to create unique dishes with local variations. Vasquez noted that achiote [ah-chee-oh-teh], the spice used to season and enhance the yellow color of the corn flour dough for the pastelitos, is a Nahuat word. Nahuat is a widely spoken indigenous language in Mexico and Central America. The rich legacy of Salvadoran food is seldom recognized alongside Western cuisine, even though many of its ingredients are sourced from the Global South—reinforcing cultural divisions. The Dresher Center’s “More than Pupusas” cooking event aimed to bridge this gap and celebrate the cultural footprint of Salvadoran cuisine.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I interviewed more than 100 women while I’ve been working on this project. It’s taken me nine years,” says Vasquez about her recent release, <em>The SalviSoul Cookbook</em>. “I wanted to make sure that we’re giving credit where credit is due.” </p>

    <p>The tasters and aspiring chefs were grateful to be part of the long tradition of communities brought together across borders and time to learn, cook, and share a meal with new and old friends. <Title>Retrievers learn the art and heart of cooking Salvadoran food at True Grit&#8217;s Test Kitchen</Title>

    <p>“Recipes are like an address to a homeland, but they’re also very personal to your own story,” said Karla T. Vasquez, author of <a href="https://salvisoul.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><em>The SalviSoul Cookbook</em></a>, in True Grit’s Test Kitchen. <strong>Celia Bonilla</strong>, a business technology administration sophomore, grinned and nodded—the addresses for her own recipes come from El Salvador and Maryland. Bonilla joined other UMBC students earlier this fall for the “More than Pupusas” cooking demonstration, sponsored by the Dresher Center for the Humanities, to learn how to cook Salvadoran street food.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Bonilla sat at one of two tables set with brown butcher paper with her classmates, <strong>Stephania Fonseca</strong>, a social work sophomore, and <strong>Jeffrey Molina Soriano</strong>, a computer science junior. They also have roots in Maryland and El Salvador. “Pastelitos [pah-steh-lee-tos] means little pie and it’s the Salvadoran version of empanadas [em-pah-nah-dahs],” said Vasquez. “Empanadas are well known all over Latin America. Greeks, Italians, and other Europeans make meat pies, too.”</p>

    <p>Like many Salvadoran students at UMBC, their journeys to UMBC are as complex as the ingredients they use for this meal. “Sometimes Hispanic Heritage Month events portray Latinx culture as a monolith, often focusing on the Caribbean or Mexican American experience,” said <strong>Courtney C. Hobson</strong> ’10, M.A. ’14, history, program manager at the <a href="https://dreshercenter.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">James T. and Virginia M. Dresher Center for the Humanities</a>. “I grew up in Prince George’s County, Maryland, where a significant part of the Latinx immigrant community comes from Central America, specifically El Salvador. Many of our Latinx students have roots in Central America—I wanted to organize an event that celebrated the rich culture they represent.”</p>

    <p>“I came here when I was six years old from El Salvador,” said Bonilla, who attended the event as part of an assignment for the <a href="https://mlli.umbc.edu/spanish-courses/#:~:text=SPAN%20304-,Spanish%20for%20Heritage%20Spanish%20Speakers,-I%20%C2%A0(Exclusively%20for" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Spanish for Heritage Spanish Speakers</a> class. Students must participate in two on-campus and two off-campus cultural events that celebrate Hispanic/Latinx culture. While Bonilla is familiar with campus events as the parent of a UMBC alum <strong>Jasmine Esmeralda Bonilla</strong> ’21, chemical engineering, this event felt different. “This class gives me a chance to learn more about my culture and language by engaging with people from various countries and age groups.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Culinary traditions</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Most students at the event said they had eaten pupusas (puh-poo-suhz) at home or at a restaurant. This flat corn flour cake, stuffed with cheese, beans, and sometimes meat is the national dish of El Salvador. “I have an aunt who is from El Salvador. She taught my mom, and then my mom taught me how to make pupusas with my sister,” said Fonseca. “My dad is from El Salvador, and my mom is from Mexico. We learned to make pupusas together as a family. So it became a typical food from my home.”</p>

    <p>As students kneaded the dough into a palm-sized disc, filled it with sautéed mushrooms, and pinched the edges to seal the pastelitos, they also shared what food meant to them in the context of their family and student life. A clear theme emerged, culinary traditions can extend beyond the kitchen. “We have the Philly pretzel factory. I’ve never been able to find a soft pretzel as good as the Philly Pretzel Factory,” said <strong>Ashley Gutshall</strong> about her hometown of Royersford, Pennsylvania. Gutshall, a history and Spanish sophomore, shares, “It’s our family tradition to get Philly soft pretzels after doctor’s appointments.”</p>

    <p>Snack routines also create taste memories. “I was born in El Salvador during the Civil War [1980-1992] but was raised in Los Angeles. I would often fantasize about the routines my family would have had if they had been able to stay in their homeland,” said Vasquez, as she cooked down strawberries that she used to sweeten a large container of water filled with chan seeds—similar to chia seeds in texture and nutrition. “Fresco de chan satisfied that question for me because it’s a drink students have after school,” said Vasquez. </p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Food as a cultural bridge</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Dishes are a fingerprint of a family’s traditions and tastes that can also serve as a timeline marking the evolution of ingredients locally and globally. “When my mom hears of these new trending food ingredients like chia seeds or quinoa,” says Vasquez, “she argues that they have been used in El Salvador and Central American communities for a long time.” </p>

    <p>Whether savory or sweet, the names of foods and spices across Latin America, and the dishes they inspire, are rooted in indigenous, African, and European languages and culinary traditions often fused to create unique dishes with local variations. Vasquez noted that achiote [ah-chee-oh-teh], the spice used to season and enhance the yellow color of the corn flour dough for the pastelitos, is a Nahuat word. Nahuat is a widely spoken indigenous language in Mexico and Central America. The rich legacy of Salvadoran food is seldom recognized alongside Western cuisine, even though many of its ingredients are sourced from the Global South—reinforcing cultural divisions. The Dresher Center’s “More than Pupusas” cooking event aimed to bridge this gap and celebrate the cultural footprint of Salvadoran cuisine.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I interviewed more than 100 women while I’ve been working on this project. It’s taken me nine years,” says Vasquez about her recent release, <em>The SalviSoul Cookbook</em>. “I wanted to make sure that we’re giving credit where credit is due.” </p>

    <p>The tasters and aspiring chefs were grateful to be part of the long tradition of communities brought together across borders and time to learn, cook, and share a meal with new and old friends. <Title>Retrievers are upping their research game in the 2024-25 Fulbright U.S. Student Program cohort</Title>

    <p>At the height of COVID-19, <strong>Nicole Attram</strong> developed severe lower back pain which impeded her mobility and flexibility. While physical therapy helped mitigate the symptoms, the cause is still unknown. That experience determined the course of her career. After graduating from UMBC in 2023, Attram, mechanical engineering, received a 2024 – 2025 Fulbright U.S. Student award to study in Milan, Italy, in a master’s program in international healthcare management, economics, and policy specializing in pharmaceuticals and medical technology at the <a href="https://www.sdabocconi.it/en/specialized-master-full-time-executive/mihmep" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SDA Bocconi School of Management</a>.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“This experience has inspired my interest in orthopedic biomechanics, particularly prosthetics, and exoskeletons, to help restore autonomy to individuals with lifelong mobility challenges,” shares Attram on her <a href="https://www.nicoleattram.com/about" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">website</a>. “I aim to conduct research at the intersection of systemic racism, healthcare policy, and orthopedic biomechanics to offer holistic care and assistive technology to underserved communities.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Each year, more than 10,000 students apply to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program with just over 2,000 selected from hundreds of colleges and universities across the U.S. In the last decade, <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/tag/fulbright/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC students and alumni have received</a> more than 85 Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for research and teaching placements in <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-mentors-support-a-record-number-of-fulbright-student-award-semifinalists/#:~:text=Being%20capable%20of%20big%20things" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Africa</a>, <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/a-journey-of-growth-retriever-fulbright/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Asia and the Pacific</a>, the <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-2022-fulbright-student-scholars/#:~:text=do%20it%20too.%E2%80%9D-,Intercultural%20understanding%20in%20medicine,-Maryam%20Elhabashy%20%E2%80%9921" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Middle East</a>, <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-2022-fulbright-student-scholars/#:~:text=Latine%20teachers%20needed" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">South America</a>, and <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/after-covid-halted-global-travel-umbcs-newest-fulbright-scholars-begin-their-journeys/#:~:text=Answering%20big%20questions" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Europe</a>.     <p>Attram’s mentor <strong>Maria C. Sanchez</strong>, director of the Grand Challenge Scholars Program, professor of the practice, and director of the Engineering and Computing Education Program, says, “Nicole always displayed the motivation, perseverance, and inquisitiveness of a successful researcher. She also demonstrated a high level of global awareness that was refreshing to see in a non-international undergraduate student.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4>Advancing global research</h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Attram is among eight recent graduates and alumni in UMBC’s 2024 – 2025 Fulbright U.S. Student Program class who are sharing their knowledge and building community around the world by earning a master’s degree, conducting research, or teaching English. This year is especially significant, as six of eight awards are research-focused, marking the highest number of research awards in UMBC’s Fulbright history. Students seeking research awards must develop a proposal in coordination with potential advisers in the universities and laboratories where they want to study as part of their application. Graduate degree awards require submitting both Fulbright and graduate school applications.</p>

<Title>UMBC chemical engineering student intern finds purpose giving patients hope</Title>

    <p>A few weeks into her summer internship with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, rising senior <strong>Ortisemoyowa “Moyo” Ikomi</strong>, <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">chemical engineering</a>, attended an event celebrating a milestone in the company’s construction of a <a href="https://www.astrazeneca-us.com/media/press-releases/2024/astrazeneca-expands-us-manufacturing-footprint-to-accelerate-ambitions-in-next-generation-cell-therapy-discovery-and-development.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">new drug manufacturing plant</a> in Rockville, Maryland. During the event, the organizers played a video featuring a young girl whose seemingly terminal cancer was cured with immunotherapy drugs—the same type of drugs that would be manufactured in the new facility.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“This girl was in hospice care, at home with her family who thought they might just have to wait for her life to end, and this drug gave her a new lease on life. It drove home for me how important this work is, and how I would love to keep working in the pharmaceutical industry,” says Ikomi.</p>

    <p>Ikomi landed her internship with AstraZeneca after talking with a company representative at the <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/the-2024-career-fair/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC Career Fair</a>. She worked on the company’s management of the planned Rockville plant, investigating a software tool that could track construction progress.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It’s not traditional chemical engineering, more within the realm of project management of large-scale engineering projects. I’m definitely enjoying it,” Ikomi says. “I’ve learned so much during the internship. The experience has made me think I’d like to continue working in the engineering project management sphere.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Ikomi credits the UMBC Career Center with supporting her throughout her internship application process—consulting with her on application timelines, uncovering resources for finding job openings, and offering tips for honing her resume and interviewing skills. “They offer an invaluable service,” she says. “Even more students could benefit from using them.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Ikomi, who came to UMBC from Lagos, Nigeria, says she arrived thinking she wanted to be a scientific researcher. When she realized basic research wasn’t the best fit for her, faculty and fellow students listened as she talked through her dilemma and offered advice on other options. She found that her true passions lay in shepherding discoveries from the lab to the wider world, where they could directly impact people’s lives.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Since that celebration event at AstraZeneca, Ikomi says she often thinks back to the video of the young girl who was cured of cancer. “When I think of this internship as a whole, my mind always goes to that experience. That moment crystallized that this type of work is what I want to dedicate my career to.” </p>

<Title>UMBC-run program will support twice as many tech internships this summer</Title>

    <p>An innovative internship program run through UMBC that helps Maryland support growing technology businesses while also retaining talented college graduates in the region is set to more than double over the next year, thanks to a $700,000 budget investment from Governor Wes Moore and the Maryland General Assembly. The funding increase is effective July 1, making it available for the summer internship season and allowing for a growing number of employers to immediately take advantage of this proven and effective workforce development program. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Launched and administered by UMBC, the <a href="https://mtip.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland Technology Internship Program</a> (MTIP) offers financial assistance to technology-based businesses across the state to enable them to hire more interns from colleges. To date, students from 34 Maryland colleges and universities have been placed in more than 1,000 technical internships, primarily in smaller businesses, across biohealth and life sciences, engineering, IT/software solutions, cybersecurity, and manufacturing. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Through programs like MTIP, UMBC is driving economic development in our state, which fulfills our mission as an anchor university,” said UMBC President <strong>Valerie Sheares Ashby</strong>. “I want to thank Delegate Rosenberg for helping bring MTIP to fruition as well as Governor Moore for his leadership in making this MTIP expansion possible.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>MTIP was made possible as a result of House Bill 1317, 2014 legislation sponsored by state Del. Samuel I. “Sandy” Rosenberg, who has continued to work with UMBC and the University System of Maryland to shape the program. Originally aimed at smaller businesses, MTIP was expanded through subsequent legislation to larger technology companies as well as state and local agencies. MTIP first received funding in the FY 2019 budget, and the first <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-connects-insightful-students-with-growing-companies-through-the-maryland-technology-internship-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MTIP-supported interns</a> began working in the fall of 2018. This new funding, on top of the current base budget of $365,000, will make MTIP a $1 million-a-year regional growth initiative.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Among the many MTIP success stories is <strong>Courtney Cavin </strong>’22, M.S. ’23, chemical engineering, who turned an internship into a successful career with <a href="https://astekdx.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Astek Diagnostics</a>, a medical device company based in Halethorpe, Maryland. Astek CEO <strong><a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/tackling-disparities-related-to-healthcare-and-care-access/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Mustafa Al-Adhami</a></strong>, M.S. ’15, Ph.D. ’20, mechanical engineering, describes how MTIP interns grow—and grow the companies where they work.</p>

    <p>“I came into the office during Courtney Cavin’s first week and sketched out a concept for testing urine for UTI,” said Al-Adhami. “At that point, Astek Diagnostics was just the two of us. Two years later, we’ve developed our first Alpha cartridge and she is Astek’s chief product officer.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“We are accepting applications for summer internships now and are ready to immediately scale up,” said <strong>Jen Spencer Heilman</strong>, UMBC program director for workforce initiatives, noting that the popular program often has a waitlist of interested companies. “We currently average about 160 internships a year. This new funding will allow us to increase matching funds to employers and support more than 300 students across the state each year. Historically, we’ve had to turn away a number of employers due to reaching funding capacity. We are thrilled for this opportunity to expand our support to more companies.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Heilman said she looks forward to the program’s partnership with <a href="https://upsurgebaltimore.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UpSurge Baltimore</a> and the <a href="https://www.eda.gov/funding/programs/regional-technology-and-innovation-hubs/2023/Baltimore-Tech-Hub" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Baltimore Tech Hub Consortium</a> as an ecosystem builder for Baltimore tech. <Title>UMBC students receive prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for fifth consecutive year</Title>

    <p>For the fifth consecutive year, multiple UMBC students have been awarded a Barry Goldwater Scholarship. <strong>Gabriel Otubu</strong> ’25, biochemistry, <strong>Nathaniel Glover</strong> ’25, chemical engineering, and <strong>Samuel Barnett</strong> ’25, biochemistry, were recently named among the 2024 Goldwater Scholars recipients, joining UMBC’s growing list of students to receive this prestigious research scholarship. Since 2005, 31 UMBC students have been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The goal of the <a href="https://goldwaterscholarship.gov/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation</a> includes ensuring that the “U.S. is producing the number of highly-qualified professionals the nation needs” in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Otubu, Barnett, and Glover are among the 438 recipients of this year’s scholarship, the largest number of scholars ever supported in a single year in the program’s history. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“UMBC’s continued success with the recent Goldwater recipients is a direct result of the strong faculty mentoring that our students receive,” says <strong>April Householder</strong> ’95, visual and performing arts, UMBC’s director of undergraduate research and prestigious scholarships. “This is also a reflection of the incredible support programs and staff that UMBC makes available to students, helping them go the extra mile.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h4><strong>Supported by multiple scholars programs</strong></h4>

    <p>As an undergraduate research fellow in biology professor <a href="https://brewsterlab.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Rachel Brewster</strong>’s lab</a>, Gabriel Otubu is investigating the role of the Ndrg1b gene in neurulation—the process of forming a neural tube that takes a hollow shape that differentiates into the brain and spinal cord—and how it affects other genes. This research, Otubu says, is aiming to understand the genetic risk factors associated with specific congenital disorders, such as spina bifida, with a goal of finding treatment options for these disorders. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Otubu, a <a href="https://meyerhoff.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Scholar</a> who plans on pursuing an M.D./Ph.D., shares that with Brewster’s guidance, “I learned that the M.D./Ph.D [route] was possible for me, as well as the possibility of being able to have a commitment to helping people in the clinic and also doing research to support that.” He is also an <a href="https://urise.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Undergraduate Research Training Initiative for Student Enhancement</a> (U-RISE) Scholar, an experience he says inspired him to pursue a career in research because he was able to be supported by like-minded people. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“One of the most important things about getting the Goldwater Scholarship is the motivation it gives me to be the best researcher I can be,” says Otubu. “It’s great to get that recognition that I’m really committed to research and using my platform to help other people from diverse backgrounds become interested in research.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Nathaniel Glover, a fellow Meyerhoff Scholar, says that receiving the Goldwater scholarship will “open up a lot of opportunities for me to be a competitive grad school applicant.” His Goldwater proposal included the research he worked on to develop a dual-phase steel that can combat hydrogen embrittlement, the mechanical damage of metal due to the penetration of hydrogen, which causes a reduction in ductility. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Glover worked in the lab of C. Cem Taşan, associate professor of metallurgy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as an MIT Summer Research Program participant in 2023. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>The program, he shares, “was very helpful in teaching me how to write about my research, which was extremely beneficial in the Goldwater application process. Taşan and my research mentor, Dr. Kyung-Shik Kim, were instrumental in developing my research in this project, introducing me to the science behind it, and working with me throughout my work in the project. I learned how to write and portray my research in a way that’s well communicated, interesting, and educational.”</p>

    <h4><strong>Developing into a researcher</strong></h4>
    
    
    
    <p>Samuel Barnett’s journey in becoming a Goldwater Scholar began during his time as a student at Howard Community College (HCC). Barnett, who transferred to UMBC last fall, was able to take advantage of the updated eligibility requirements for prospective scholarship applicants. The 2024 application cycle amended its eligibility criteria allowing transfer students to be nominated by the school they are currently enrolled in or by the school they matriculated from. With the help of the HCC research department and Householder, Barnett was nominated by HCC to receive the scholarship. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>With this recent change, Householder shares that “cross-institutional collaborations like these are opening new pathways between UMBC and its transfer institutions [while] providing an additional layer of support to transfer students who come to UMBC with a strong research background, like Sam.”</p>

    <p>Barnett worked with his mentor Joseph Sparenberg, professor of chemistry at HCC, on a project that uses a species of yeast, <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae,</em> to model a type of cancer in humans that occurs from mutations in the KRAS gene. The model, which is still in the proof of concept stage, visualizes a live cell to see pathways and tumor growth in real-time. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Barnett nearly called it quits with his academic journey upon enrolling at HCC, saying that he “had no motivation to continue on with my education.” After participating in HCC’s research program, Barnett found a renewed sense of purpose and took his research interests to the next level. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Before transferring to UMBC, Barnett took part in the <a href="https://stembuild.umbc.edu/build-summer-research/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">BUILD a Bridge to STEM</a> internship program, a component of <a href="https://stembuild.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">STEM BUILD at UMBC</a>, which he says was vital for “my development in this Goldwater process.” During the internship, Barnett worked with <strong>Maria Cambraia</strong> <strong>Guimaro</strong>, assistant director of research and international affairs in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, who he says played a significant role in his research journey at UMBC.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“It was extremely empowering to know that as a community college student, I could experience research there and also win a prestigious award for it,” adds Barnett. “I now have a collection of wonderful mentors throughout my research journey that’s helped to shape who I am today.” </p>

    <p>As waves of students swarmed the Retriever Activity Center last week, senior <strong>Micah Polsky</strong> of the UMBC Crafting Club quietly stood knitting a pale blue merino wool sock with three tiny needles. Behind Polsky, on a presentation board the UMBC Crafters made to lure prospective new club members, was pinned the mate to the sock in progress.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Knitting is a lot of trial and error and a surprising amount of math…but it can be very relaxing or very stimulating depending on the kinds of projects you make,” says Polsky, an environmental science major. Together with club president <strong>Emily Bolt</strong> (a senior chemical engineering major and avid embroiderer), they talked yarns and technique with students shopping for new clubs and organizations to join at this year’s Involvement Fest.</p>

    <p>Beyond a meet and greet, and far beyond posters and tchotchke giveaways, iFest is a key moment for students looking to meet new people and try something new. An estimated 2,000 students attended this year’s event, according to <strong>Tori Ciorra</strong>, assistant director for student organizations. With <a href="https://umbc.edu/life-on-campus/clubs-activities/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">more than 200 UMBC clubs</a> representing everything from career pathways to religion, to service, recreation, sports, and more—not to mention an open door for students to create new orgs of their own—there is something for everyone to enjoy.</p>

    <p>“Involvement Fest is an exciting opportunity for new and returning students to join a student organization and find a community where they can foster new relationships and experiences. Each organization is incredibly unique and creates a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved outside of the classroom,” said Ciorra, who was pleased to see the crowds of interested students. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I am always in awe of the organizations that our students have created, and watching the creative ways they market their organization. Hearing leaders talk about the number of sign-ups they received and their excitement for the year is extremely rewarding and sets a wonderful tone for the rest of the year.” </p>

    <h2><strong>A smorgasbord of choices</strong></h2>
    
    
    
    <p>Surveying one of two huge rooms of club displays, first-year computer science student <strong>Emma Popoko</strong> flipped through the event program to pinpoint tables she especially wanted to visit. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Film club could be interesting. And I’m definitely interested in the African Student Association because I’m African…and possibly the <a href="https://www.nsbe.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Society of Black Engineers</a>,” she said. Her added motivation to be there? “So I don’t just stay in my dorm all day. I can interact with people and get a feel for the place and feel like I’m part of the community and not just here for classes.”</p>

Fowler, a transfer student, helped re-name the group recently to be more inclusive.  “I love the idea that I can change the world, so being able to have a tangible change on something like a university…it does mean a lot to me,” said Fowler.
    
    
    
    <p>Sophomore <strong>Ayan Chaudry</strong>, a biology major, joined a couple of clubs in his first year at UMBC, but came to iFest specifically looking for something new—possibly a pre-med fraternity. Taking part in student organizations—especially as a commuter student—made his first year feel “less lonely.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I know some people like to just go home and back and forth to school, but I feel like if you stay on campus a bit longer…there’s more to it than just studying,” he said.</p>

    <p>As folks passed the table for The Garden, a physical gardening space on campus that also grows food for Retriever Essentials and other partners, club president and senior biology/psychology major <strong>Eli Gooding</strong> handed out lollipops and made a solid case for why getting one’s hands dirty—while growing veggies, that is—is such a great form of self-care.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“For me, gardening is really therapeutic and it’s how I relieve stress,” said Gooding. “It’s really good to have a hobby.”</p>
