• Dr. Hrabowski spoke at this week’s American Public Health Association Conference in Chicago, as well as the CyberMaryland Conference and the Southwest Baltimore Economic Forum’s monthly meeting.
• Hrabowski also co-authored an editorial in the Seattle Times with Yolanda Watson Spiva, president and CEO of the College Success Foundation, on preparing low-income students for college success.
• Marie desJardins, computer science, spoke to Quartz about physicist Steven Hawking’s recent remark that “women should remain a mystery,” and how attitudes like this hinder women from pursuing careers in artificial intelligence research.
• Govind Rao, chemical and biochemical engineering, has headed a project that will allow soldiers in combat to manufacture life-saving medications in a matter of hours using a “portable briefcase-sized kit.”
• Dennis Coates, economics, warns us about overestimating the economic growth a professional football franchise might bring to Los Angeles.
• Lisa Gray, Assistant Director of Student Life for Cultural and Spiritual Diversity, was on The Marc Steiner Show to talk about empowering young girls through social justice education.
• Rennetta Tull, Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Student Professional Development and Postdoctoral Affairs, is one of three finalists for the 2015 GEDC Airbus Diversity Award.
• Ellen Hemmerly, bwtech@UMBC, talks about why cyber companies are prime targets for mergers and acquisitions.
• Maurice Berger, visual arts, talks about the “Modern Art and the Birth of American Television” exhibit at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.
• Women’s soccer has made it to their third straight America East Championship season after defeating Stony Book 1-0 on Sunday.
• Women’s swimming and diving bested George Washington University 138.5-120.5 at the Aquatic Complex last Saturday, while the men’s team beat GW 132-115.
• The swimming and diving teams also released their 2015-16 hype video this week, and you can watch it here.
• Men’s soccer edged Drexel 1-0 Tuesday.

• Dennis Coates and Brad Humphries, economics, have found that sports stadiums depress local wages for workers in other entertainment-related fields.
• The play Kerrmoor, written by Susan McCully, theatre, directed by Eve Muson, theatre, and produced by Baltimore’s own Interrobang and Strand Theatre Companies, will premiere as part of the Women’s Voices Theater Festival on October 29.
• Rebecca Adelman, media & communication studies, comments on the now-iconic image of Aylan Kurdi, the three-year-old Syrian refugee who drowned off the coast of Turkey, and examines why this particular image from the crisis in Syria invoked such a visceral response where others did not.
• John Rennie Short, public policy, argues that our fire policies are “worsening the damage and increasing the cost” of the wildfires in the Western United States.
• Technical.ly writes on Baltimore’s burgeoning startup culture, and profiles two bwtech@UMBC companies, Fearless Solutions and PaRaBal, that plan to move downtown from the research park later this year.
• UMBC Men’s Soccer edged out a 3-2 win over George Washington.

• UMBC researchers are partnering with UMass Amherst and Williams College on a project that aims to improve electricity use based on meter data.
• Many lawmakers are pushing for fair wages for NFL cheerleaders, but Dennis Coates, economics, has a few points for them to consider.
• Huebots, a game designed by UMBC undergrads, is now available on Steam.
• Don Norris, public policy, says that it was Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s “race to lose” for re-election, and that her decision to bow out changes everything.
• Joshua Enszer, a former lecturer in chemical engineering at UMBC, has joined the University of Delaware’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as an assistant professor of instruction.
• Yvette Mozie-Ross, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Planning, praises the federal College Scorecard.
• UMBC Volleyball was featured in the America East Volleyball Weekly Honors, and has wins over Morgan State and Fordham under their belts as the season gets under way.
• Men’s Lacrosse will be participating in the Fourth Annual Capital Lacrosse Invitational on Sunday, October 11 at the Landon School in Bethesda, joining Cornell, Penn State, and Loyola University Maryland.
• Women’s Cross Country placed second in last weekend’s Wolfie Invitational at Stony Brook University.

• Steve Sharkey ‘06, M.P.P. public policy, current head of Baltimore City’s Department of General Services, has been featured on the Baltimore Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” list.
• Dennis Coates, economics, supports Baltimore City Council President Jack Young’s plan to sell the city-owned Baltimore Convention Center Hilton hotel.
• Medhi Benna, Center for Space Science and Technology, is lead author on a paper confirming neon in the moon’s exosphere.
• Lynn Cazabon, visual arts, has placed second in the Trawick Prize competition, held annually by the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District to honor artists from Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Jason Hughes ’15, M.F.A. intermedia and digital arts, claimed third prize.
