Here’s who (and how much snow) made the news this week:

• In case you hadn’t heard, it snowed a lot in Baltimore this past weekend, and UMBC was one of many schools affected by the record accumulation. Residential students were able to move in Wednesday, and spring semester classes began Thursday.
• Baltimore Sun columnist Dan Rodricks has some ideas on how the city might deal with future blizzards, and he references a conversation with Don Norris, public policy, about the pros and cons of regional governance.
• Kimberly Moffitt, American studies, discussed the influence of present events on this year’s Black History Month commemorations in and around the Baltimore area with the Sun. “If you think about it, history is occurring daily, right? So yesterday is history,” she says.
• Dr. Hrabowski granted an extensive interview to University Business for a story chronicling UMBC’s rise as a research institution committed to inclusive excellence.

• Times Higher Education has named UMBC one of the top universities in the world for the fourth year in a row.
• President Freeman Hrabowski will speak at Clemson University on October 14 as part of the school’s Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Month, and deliver the keynote address at the Illinois Principals Association’s 44th Annual Education Leaders Fall Conference & Exhibition on October 18
• Dr. Hrabowski has also been named one of the 20 “Most Interesting College Presidents” by TheBestSchools.org
• UMBC graduates Pell Grant-eligible students at a rate of 61%, but Diane Lee, vice provost and dean of undergraduate education, says “[it’s] still nowhere near we need it to be.”
• UMBC has begun a three-year, $2 million partnership with the Naval Academy for cybersecurity research
• UMBC, along with Spelman College and several other nonprofits and institutions of higher education, is involved in the National Academic STEM Collaborative, a project that aims to support minority girls and women in STEM fields.
• Don Norris, public policy, speaks on Governor Larry Hogan urging Marylanders to apply for tax refunds they may be eligible for.
• Kate Brown, history, will speak at the University of Tennessee on October 13 as part of its annual lecture series on modern European history.
• Anne Sarah Rubin, history, is a keynote speaker at this week’s “Gender, Memory, and War in the Anglo-American World” conference at the University of Mississippi.
• Sherelle Walker of the UMBC women’s volleyball team is featured in the York (Pa.) Daily Record.
• Destinee Morris scored her second goal of the year against Albany, helping the Retriever women’s soccer team to a 1-1 double overtime tie.
• In men’s soccer news, senior forward Darius Madison and freshman midfielder Patrick Jean-Gilles earned the America East Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.

• We’re number 41! On GrubHub’s list of the most caffeinated schools in the country, that is. Makes you wonder if we should be drinking more or less coffee…
• UMBC researchers are partnering with UMass Amherst and Williams College on a project that aims to improve electricity use based on meter data.
• Many lawmakers are pushing for fair wages for NFL cheerleaders, but Dennis Coates, economics, has a few points for them to consider.
• Huebots, a game designed by UMBC undergrads, is now available on Steam.
• Don Norris, public policy, says that it was Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s “race to lose” for re-election, and that her decision to bow out changes everything.
• Joshua Enszer, a former lecturer in chemical engineering at UMBC, has joined the University of Delaware’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as an assistant professor of instruction.
• Yvette Mozie-Ross, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Planning, praises the federal College Scorecard.
• UMBC Volleyball was featured in the America East Volleyball Weekly Honors, and has wins over Morgan State and Fordham under their belts as the season gets under way.
• Men’s Lacrosse will be participating in the Fourth Annual Capital Lacrosse Invitational on Sunday, October 11 at the Landon School in Bethesda, joining Cornell, Penn State, and Loyola University Maryland.
• Women’s Cross Country placed second in last weekend’s Wolfie Invitational at Stony Brook University.
