<Title>Meyerhoff Scholars Program celebrates 500th Ph.D.</Title>

    <p>This spring, the <a href="https://meyerhoff.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Scholars Program</a> at UMBC celebrates a landmark achievement: 500 program graduates have earned a Ph.D.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The milestone highlights the program’s success as the nation’s original model for increasing diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Grounded in high expectations and robust support, Meyerhoff Scholars consistently go on to excel in top graduate programs and lead in academia, industry, and government while mentoring the next generation. UMBC has maintained its position as the national leader in producing <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-leads-nation-in-producing-african-american-undergraduates-who-pursue-m-d-ph-d-s/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Black M.D./Ph.D. graduates</a>: Between 2014 and 2024, UMBC alumni accounted for 15 percent of all such dual-degree recipients nationwide, far outpacing any other institution. UMBC is also the leader in graduating Black students who <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-graduates-more-black-students-who-go-on-to-earn-doctorates-in-natural-sciences-and-engineering-than-any-u-s-college/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">go on to earn Ph.D.s</a> in the life sciences, math and computer sciences, and engineering.</p>

    <p><strong>Joseph Washington</strong> ’97, mechanical engineering, a member of the fourth Meyerhoff cohort (M4), embodies this trajectory. A first-generation college student, he initially considered trade school after a knee injury derailed his plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. The Meyerhoff scholarship changed his path. In particular, Selection Weekend for admitted Meyerhoff Scholars and Summer Bridge, intensive group programming prior to the scholars’ first UMBC semester, affirmed his identity and potential: “The most important message I internalized from the Meyerhoff program was that I can be Black and intelligent,” he recalls.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Washington earned a master’s degree before returning to UMBC for his Ph.D. Today, he serves as an assistant teaching professor at UMBC at the Universities at Shady Grove. He mentors students informally, advises the UMBC chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and creates space for Meyerhoff Scholars to discuss graduate school and careers. “UMBC has always felt like home,” he says. “I would not be here if not for the Meyerhoff Scholars Program.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h2><strong>A family tradition</strong></h2>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Sadella Santos</strong> ’12, chemical engineering, M20, and her sister <strong>Melissa</strong> <strong>Santos</strong> ’12, chemical engineering, M19, also credit the program with shaping their journeys. Sadella, a senior scientist at <a href="https://www.exponent.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Exponent, Inc.</a> with a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, values the emphasis on community. “Academic success is a collective effort, rather than individual competition,” she says. “At work, I champion the message that diverse perspectives are necessary to drive scientific progress.” She pays it forward by reviewing abstracts for the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) and hosting lab visits to expose high school students to possible careers.</p>

    <p>Melissa, who earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering followed by a J.D., applies problem-solving and adaptability skills honed through Meyerhoff to her legal career. She recently participated in a panel for McNair Scholars on summer research experiences. “Community and network are important,” she notes. “Surround yourself with people who will support you but also challenge you to grow.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Meyerhoff scholars often refer to themselves as family—and that’s especially true for the Santoses. <strong>Justin Santos</strong> ’17, biochemistry and molecular biology, M25, is the third scholar in the family. He is completing his M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience at Emory University this spring and will begin residency in emergency medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. He mentors students pursuing clinical-scientist careers and assists with ABRCMS abstract reviews. “High-quality, comprehensive mentorship” was invaluable to him, and he works to provide that same guidance to others.</p>
    
    
    
    <h2><strong>Reaching back to pay it forward</strong></h2>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Naomi Mburu</strong> ’18, M26, chemical engineering, was <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbcs-naomi-mburu-receives-first-rhodes-scholarship-in-school-history/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC’s first Rhodes Scholar</a>, attending Oxford University on one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scholarships. She earned a D.Phil. in engineering science from the University of Oxford and today serves as lead analyst at <a href="https://fas.energy/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Fusion Advisory Services</a>, providing analysis of the fusion industry to a wide range of stakeholders. Meyerhoff pushed her beyond her comfort zone into leadership roles and strengthened her public speaking and networking skills, she says. She now reviews scholarship essays for UMBC students and organizes summer internships to bring diverse talent into the fusion energy field. “Supporting the next generation is so important,” she says. “I have only come this far myself with the help of my own mentors.”</p>

    <p>These alumni illustrate the program’s lasting influence. Meyerhoff Scholars do not simply succeed—they reach back, creating opportunities and building communities for current students and early-career researchers. The model’s impact now extends even further: universities including Penn State, UNC-Chapel Hill, UC Berkeley, Stony Brook, and others have adapted key elements of the Meyerhoff approach with support from funders such as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and Simons Foundation. The Howard Hughes Medical Institutehas also been a long-term supporter of Meyerhoff and its replications.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>With more than 2,200 undergraduates supported to date and a national reputation for producing leaders committed to diversity in STEM, the 500th Ph.D. stands as compelling proof of the Meyerhoff model’s effectiveness. As alumni advance in their fields and invest in those who follow, the Meyerhoff Scholars Program continues to change lives one by one, transforming the face of American science through excellence, community, and a powerful ripple effect that will benefit generations to come.</p>

<Title>Eight Retrievers awarded prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowships</Title>

    <p>Eight UMBC students and alumni have been awarded the prestigious 2026 <a href="https://www.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/grfp-nsf-graduate-research-fellowship-program" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship</a> (GRFP), a highly competitive honor that supports outstanding graduate students in STEM disciplines. This year’s large cohort of Retriever recipients demonstrates the university’s commitment to fostering research excellence and preparing students to become leaders in their fields.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>The recipients are already making waves with their work. <strong>Caly Ferguson</strong> ’26, mechanical engineering, was recently named to the <a href="https://umbc.edu/quick-posts/ferguson-nsbe-25-under-25/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Society of Black Engineers’ “25 Under 25” list</a> and received the <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/goldwater-scholarships-2025/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Barry Goldwater Scholarship</a> in 2025. He has been working on developing an affordable and dextrous <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/where-bright-ideas-come-to-life/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">prosthetic forearm and hand</a> with <strong>Ramana Vinjamuri</strong>, associate professor of computer science and electrical engineering. </p>

    <p><strong>Lesley Hernandez</strong> ’25, biochemistry, will use the GRFP to support her doctoral studies in biomedical science at the University of Michigan. At UMBC, she studied HIV replication with <strong>Michael Summers</strong>, professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Both Ferguson and Hernandez are Meyerhoff Scholars, and Hernandez also <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/art-of-scientists/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">balances her science with a passion for Latin dance</a>. </p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Peter Allen Wilschke</strong> ’24, economics and political science, is heading to graduate school after completing a two-year research assistant position at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington, DC. His research at UMBC on the complex relationships between political factors and fiscal policy <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/peter-wilschke-celebrates-national-research-accomplishments/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">garnered national attention</a>.</p>

    <p><strong>Sydney Braithwaite</strong>, who completed her bachelor’s in forensic chemistry at Towson University, will bring her fellowship to UMBC for graduate study with <strong>Lee Blaney</strong>, professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering. <strong>Meredith Morse</strong> ’25, chemical engineering; <strong>Shefra Shah</strong> ’24, biochemistry and molecular biology; and <strong>Terra Miley</strong> ’25, chemical engineering, are all conducting doctoral work at the University of Delaware; <strong>Salman Mirza</strong> ’25, mechanical engineering, is pursuing a Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University.</p>

    <p>The substantial fellowship provides three years of financial support, including an annual living stipend and funds for tuition and fees, and the recipients can take their fellowship to any institution in the U.S. That flexibility makes it easier for students to pursue exactly the research they are passionate about with faculty who share their enthusiasm, regardless of the level of resources available at the host institution. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>These eight fellowships are a testament to the drive and talent of UMBC’s graduates as they take on new challenges along their research journeys. Each is in a strong position to make their mark on scientific discovery and innovation across the country.</p>

<Title>Senior Caly Ferguson recognized with National Society of Black Engineers&#8217; &#8216;25 Under 25&#8217; award</Title>

    <p>Mechanical engineering senior <strong>Caly Ferguson</strong> will be honored with a “25 Under 25” award at the <a href="https://convention.nsbe.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">upcoming meeting of the National Society of Black Engineers</a> (NSBE), held March 18 – 22 in Baltimore. The award recognizes exceptional students and young professionals under the age of 25 who are making a measurable impact in science and technology fields through leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community advancement. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Ferguson is a Meyerhoff Scholar and current president of the UMBC chapter of NSBE. Last year he was one of three UMBC students <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/goldwater-scholarships-2025/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">recognized with the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship</a>, established to promote a strong STEM workforce in the U.S. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Since his first year at UMBC, Ferguson has worked in the lab of <a href="https://vinjamurilab.cs.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Ramana Vinjamuri</strong></a>, an associate professor of computer science and electrical engineering, on a project to develop a prosthetic forearm and hand. The device employs machine learning to interpret electrical signals from the nerves in the arm and translate them into desired movements of the prosthetic hand. <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/where-bright-ideas-come-to-life/#caly-ferguson" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Ferguson is interested in a career developing biomedical devices</a>—in particular making them more affordable so that more people can benefit from them. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I am truly blessed to be considered as one of the awardees for this esteemed honor,” Ferguson says. “I feel as though God, my family, my friends, and all of my mentors and colleagues have played such integral roles in my successes over the past years.”</p>

    <p>Ferguson says being a part of the NSBE community has positively shaped his career trajectory and he plans to stay involved with the society after graduation. He is running for a regional executive board position with the organization at this year’s annual meeting.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>“One of the things I am most proud of is seeing the consistent growth of the organization on campus throughout my undergraduate career,” he says. “I know that this student org will continue to rise and achieve amazing feats after I graduate from UMBC.”</p>

<Title>Meet a Retriever&#8212;Garvey Chu, mechanical engineering student at UMBC-Shady Grove</Title>

    <h4>Q: Briefly introduce yourself. What’s one essential thing you’d want another Retriever to know about you? </h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>My current area of study is <a href="https://shadygrove.umbc.edu/program/mechanical-engineering/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mechanical engineering and I attend the Shady Grove campus</a>. Outside of that, I enjoy going to the gym or just playing sports like golf and basketball. Currently I am in the final weeks of my undergraduate degree.</p>

    <h4>Q: Tell us about the support you’ve gotten as a student, or someone in the community who has inspired you or supported you, and how they did it.</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A:</strong> The advisors at Shady Grove have been great. And, I feel that the professors at Shady Grove have played a significant role in introducing me to new fields and aspects of engineering. Specifically, Prof. <strong>[Adam] Bridendolph</strong> and Dr. <strong>[Joseph] Washington</strong> have shared their personal experiences in areas that I was previously unaware of. Professor Bridendolph has expertise in the automation side of engineering, while Dr. Washington specializes in biomechanics. Both of them have really opened my eyes to new possible areas in my future career.</p>
    
    
    
    <h4>Q: What brought you to UMBC in the first place?</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A:</strong> I came to UMBC because they offered mechanical engineering and also because the convenience of the Shady Grove campus, which was really close to my home. I also heard that the professors in the STEM programs were very good.</p>

    <h4>Q: Tell us about what excites you about your academic program, what you hope to do after graduation. </h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A:</strong> I’m excited about having the ability to design machines or products. And, I really enjoyed the senior capstone project, where the team was tasked with developing an automated sortation machine. Not only myself, but the team members had limited exposure to many of the components the system consisted of such as pneumatics, PLC programming, and wiring. It was a totally new experience for us. Because of our selected project, we even had the opportunity to visit a technical college that had a department specializing in automation in West Virginia. I really enjoyed that visit. After graduation, I’m hoping to work in a field related to the automotive industry, satellites, or defense. </p>

<Title>UMBC-run program will support twice as many tech internships this summer</Title>

    <p>An innovative internship program run through UMBC that helps Maryland support growing technology businesses while also retaining talented college graduates in the region is set to more than double over the next year, thanks to a $700,000 budget investment from Governor Wes Moore and the Maryland General Assembly. The funding increase is effective July 1, making it available for the summer internship season and allowing for a growing number of employers to immediately take advantage of this proven and effective workforce development program. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Launched and administered by UMBC, the <a href="https://mtip.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland Technology Internship Program</a> (MTIP) offers financial assistance to technology-based businesses across the state to enable them to hire more interns from colleges. To date, students from 34 Maryland colleges and universities have been placed in more than 1,000 technical internships, primarily in smaller businesses, across biohealth and life sciences, engineering, IT/software solutions, cybersecurity, and manufacturing. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Through programs like MTIP, UMBC is driving economic development in our state, which fulfills our mission as an anchor university,” said UMBC President <strong>Valerie Sheares Ashby</strong>. “I want to thank Delegate Rosenberg for helping bring MTIP to fruition as well as Governor Moore for his leadership in making this MTIP expansion possible.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>MTIP was made possible as a result of House Bill 1317, 2014 legislation sponsored by state Del. Samuel I. “Sandy” Rosenberg, who has continued to work with UMBC and the University System of Maryland to shape the program. Originally aimed at smaller businesses, MTIP was expanded through subsequent legislation to larger technology companies as well as state and local agencies. MTIP first received funding in the FY 2019 budget, and the first <a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/umbc-connects-insightful-students-with-growing-companies-through-the-maryland-technology-internship-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MTIP-supported interns</a> began working in the fall of 2018. This new funding, on top of the current base budget of $365,000, will make MTIP a $1 million-a-year regional growth initiative.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Among the many MTIP success stories is <strong>Courtney Cavin </strong>’22, M.S. ’23, chemical engineering, who turned an internship into a successful career with <a href="https://astekdx.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Astek Diagnostics</a>, a medical device company based in Halethorpe, Maryland. Astek CEO <strong><a href="https://umbc.edu/stories/tackling-disparities-related-to-healthcare-and-care-access/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Mustafa Al-Adhami</a></strong>, M.S. ’15, Ph.D. ’20, mechanical engineering, describes how MTIP interns grow—and grow the companies where they work.</p>

    <p>“I came into the office during Courtney Cavin’s first week and sketched out a concept for testing urine for UTI,” said Al-Adhami. “At that point, Astek Diagnostics was just the two of us. Two years later, we’ve developed our first Alpha cartridge and she is Astek’s chief product officer.” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“We are accepting applications for summer internships now and are ready to immediately scale up,” said <strong>Jen Spencer Heilman</strong>, UMBC program director for workforce initiatives, noting that the popular program often has a waitlist of interested companies. “We currently average about 160 internships a year. This new funding will allow us to increase matching funds to employers and support more than 300 students across the state each year. Historically, we’ve had to turn away a number of employers due to reaching funding capacity. We are thrilled for this opportunity to expand our support to more companies.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Heilman said she looks forward to the program’s partnership with <a href="https://upsurgebaltimore.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UpSurge Baltimore</a> and the <a href="https://www.eda.gov/funding/programs/regional-technology-and-innovation-hubs/2023/Baltimore-Tech-Hub" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Baltimore Tech Hub Consortium</a> as an ecosystem builder for Baltimore tech. <Title>Meet a Retriever&#8212;Monroe Kennedy, III, &#8217;12, mechanical engineering professor at Stanford University</Title>

    <h6><em><strong>Meet </strong>Monroe Kennedy, III<strong>, a Meyerhoff Scholar (M20) who earned his B.S. in mechanical engineering from UMBC in 2012 before earning his M.S. in robotics and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and applied mechanics from the University of Pennsylvania. Monroe is now an assistant professor in the <a href="https://me.stanford.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">mechanical engineering department </a>at Stanford University. His work is in collaborative robotics, building systems capable of extending robotic autonomy to scenarios where robots work closely around humans and must anticipate their needs to be effective teammates. Outside of his role as a professor, Monroe serves as a national director for <a href="https://blackinrobotics.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Black in Robotics</a>, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing diversity within the field of robotics.     <h4>Q: What brought you to UMBC?</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>I came to UMBC for its mechanical engineering program and the <a href="https://meyerhoff.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Scholars Program</a>. I had a passion for invention and design and UMBC was the perfect place to gain knowledge so I could have an impactful career. During high school, I was taking courses at a community college, and one instructor was aware of the Meyerhoff program and nominated me—I am so grateful for that initial introduction.</p>

    <h4>Q: What do you love about your academic program?</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>I love mechanical engineering. When I first joined UMBC, the movie <em>Iron Man</em> had just come out and there was a screening on the Quad. I remember thinking “I want to do that!” Tony Stark was the only hero whose superpower was truly achievable—his ability to innovate and invent.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest engineering disciplines. If you follow the Ph.D. “academic tree,” you will find many of the first mechanical engineers had advisors in more fundamental sciences. Because it is a fundamental engineering discipline it covers many areas from controls, dynamics, design, fluids, vibrations, and so much more.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>An individual who learns to embrace the diversity of subjects within mechanical engineering learns to think about problems and solutions holistically and brings solutions from every sub-field to solve problems in the most elegant way possible. As a roboticist, a lot of my work is endowing my robots with a form of “intelligence,” but often we find ourselves wishing our robot had an additional physical feature, and as mechanical engineers, it is not difficult for us to make such concepts a reality very quickly.</p>

    <h4>Q: Tell us about someone in the community who has inspired you or supported you, and how they did it.</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>While at UMBC I was very fortunate to be able to work in Professor <strong>J. Vanderlei Martins</strong>‘ LACO (Laboratory for Aerosol and Cloud Optics) lab. Professor Martins was an amazing advisor who was able to use my limited experience at the time to contribute to a very impactful project involving designing the de-orbiting system for a picosatellite. Being given an opportunity to work on something that traveled to space was a key element in my ultimate trajectory, and I am very grateful to Professor Martins for his support and mentorship.</p>

    <h4>Q: Tell us about your HOW.</h4>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>A: </strong>The Meyerhoff community played a very big role in my career. Through the program, I was coached on applying for internships and graduate school. Additionally, having the support of professors like J. Vanderlei Martins, working in his laboratory, and receiving his recommendation was crucial to my academic trajectory.</p>

    <p><strong>A: </strong>I am an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department with a courtesy appointment in computer science at Stanford University. <Title>The Hospitality of UMBC&#8217;s Student Clubs</Title>

    <p>As a new semester gets underway (make sure to visit <a href="https://welcomeweek.umbc.edu/involvement-fest/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Involvement Fest</a>, September 9), these and dozens of other student organizations readily welcome Retrievers who may not assume that the club is for them. Not surprisingly, UMBC clubs and orgs thrive when new perspectives show up.</p>

    <p>When <strong>Quinlan Murphy ’21, political science</strong>, served as president of Philosophers Anonymous, the council of majors for philosophy students, he was determined to make the club feel like home to any interested student. This includes inviting discussions about Hannah Arendt’s warning against the preconditions for totalitarianism to attending online art tours as museums opened their doors virtually during the pandemic. Another of the club’s goals, he says, was to make the department’s physical space in the Performing Arts &amp; Humanities Building a welcoming place for students in between classes. “We wanted to create a little bit of a domestic vibe, so students felt invited into the building—we wanted a tangible space for them to feel at home,” says Murphy, who also obtained a certificate in philosophy. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Known better as PhilAnon, the group traditionally meets at noon on Tuesdays to allow students to present ideas—their own or others—and then follow a group discussion. “We want people to discuss these ideas outside of class with a little bit less formality, without assignments, without quizzes or tests,” says Murphy. The group also invites other majors and departments to participate, giving talks on bioethics or the hard sciences to discuss the ethical and philosophical corollaries of their academic expertise. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“Philosophy majors and other members are people who are going to go on to work in the humanities or academics,” says Murphy, “and a critical part of performing that job is being able to present ideas effectively and quickly, and then also having those ideas be criticized and poked by others.”</p>

    <p>Murphy, as a non-traditionally aged student and a commuter, has high hopes for PhilAnon and other clubs on campus. “I certainly think that the more involvement people have in school, the better college will be—it’s not just about grades and tests and essays. It’s also about growing as a person. And I think that requires interacting with your classmates outside of the classroom.”</p>

    <h2>Pull up a <em>silla </em>(chair)</h2>
    
    
    
    <p>One of <strong>Sheila Yeboah ’23, biological sciences</strong>, favorite memories of the last semester is playing online pictionary on Webex with the Spanish Conversation Club. “The combination of the members’ poor drawing skills and the wealth of Spanish synonyms made the game extra difficult,” laughs Yeboah, but she adds that the easy-going nature of the club’s president <strong>James Angle </strong>and the other executive officers makes the student org a relaxed place to learn and have fun.</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Yeboah says that previously her struggle with Spanish was having opportunities to speak it, and the low pressure of the conversation club was exactly what she needed. Yeboah, who is minoring in Spanish, joined the Spanish Conversation Club last semester when they were meeting virtually. “This club is primarily focused on forming friendships and practicing communication,” says Yeboah. “If you are a person that is a little more reserved, like me, it’s a very welcoming environment and you’re not going to feel like you can’t fit in.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Angle ’22, modern languages and linguistics, became club president his sophomore year when the club had a vacuum of leadership. He and his friend <strong>Kyndall Hardwick ’22, English</strong>, the vice president, aim to make everyone feel welcome. “So many people get scared away because they think ‘I don’t know enough Spanish at that high level,’” says Angle, “but it could literally be your first day of Spanish class and we’d say ‘Come in.’” </p>
    
    
    
    <p>Angle, who recently started taking Russian classes, knows that the hardest part of language learning can be getting comfortable speaking. “That’s the biggest battle,” he says, “but come play some fun games with us and get comfortable speaking Spanish while enjoying yourself.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h2>Building connections </h2>

    <p>At previous Involvement Fests, some students have balked at joining the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), says current president<strong> Kaitlynn Lilly</strong>, who is not an engineering major. Lilly, who is studying mathematics and physics, says that she and other club leaders emphasize that the space is accessible for anyone who “wants to empower women and move society forward,” says Lilly. “It’s a mix between creating a community of people who support women in STEM and also providing opportunities to meet with companies, practice professional development, and also be social.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>This three-fold goal is the intentional result of Lilly and others on the executive board asking themselves what the purpose of their community was. “We didn’t always have a third of our meetings mixed between social, professional development, and career,” says Lilly, a <a href="https://umbc.edu/umbc-students-set-new-record-in-prestigious-goldwater-scholarships-for-stem-research/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">2021 Goldwater Scholar</a>. “We made a very conscious decision last year to do that because we used to have a company present to us at every single meeting. And it was really hard for club members to really form that community.”</p>
    
    
    
    <p>Before the pandemic, says Lilly, the group was already hosting hybrid meetings to broaden the horizons of what companies they could invite to present. SWE will keep the hybrid format going forward for the convenience of people who commute or people who can’t make the meeting time. </p>
    
    
    
    <p><strong>Jessica Adams ’22, mechanical engineering</strong>, is starting her fourth year as a SWE member and her first as a leader. As the public relations chair, she’s eager to see the group grow its membership. “As we get a wider range of perspectives in our club, it allows us to learn about other people’s backgrounds so that we can understand where other people are coming from,” says Adams. “These interactions will make each of us a better candidate for any sort of jobs or internships we apply for in the future.”</p>
    
    
    
    <h2>Find your space</h2>
    
    
    
    <p>Murphy, who graduated last spring but hopes to stay connected to PhilAnon virtually, unsurprisingly sees students’ extracurricular involvement through the lens of what is morally and ethically good. </p>
    
    
    
    <p>“I think students should see their time at UMBC as an opportunity for social and personal growth and not just like a job training program,” he says. “They should be able to ask hard questions and explore ideas informally. I think it’s really critical that there’s these spaces for people to have these conversations away from professors and with their peers.”</p>

<Title>Alumni Awards 2017: Marc Zupan, Department of Mechanical Engineering</Title>

Today, meet <strong>Marc Zupan, </strong>associate professor and graduate program director of UMBC’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, and this year’s Outstanding Faculty Award winner.</em></p>
    <p><span>In just over 14 years at UMBC, </span><strong>Marc Zupan, </strong><span>associate professor and graduate program director in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has become known as a connection-maker. He connects students with internships, job opportunities, and graduate programs. He’s made international connections with Portugal’s </span><span>Universidade do Porto</span><span> through the Global Engineering Program. And he’s made connections across disciplines, bridging the gap between STEM and the humanities by incorporating elements of both into his own teaching.  </span><strong>Asynith Palmer ’06, English, </strong><span>a writer</span> <span>who worked with Zupan to secure funding and design the curriculum for the Global Engineering Program, says it’s his genuine interest in his students’ lives and experiences that makes him the kind of teacher and mentor that he is. “Marc…trains his creativity on helping his students,” she writes. “In fact, he feels energized by meeting with them, learning their interests, suggesting — or creating — possibilities for internships and research, and watching them thrive.” As a researcher, Dr. Zupan focuses on characterizing the behavior of and modeling materials across length scales. He earned his master’s and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in solid mechanics of materials and completed his undergraduate work at the University of Dayton. He came to UMBC after a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge MicroMechanics Centre in the U.K., he is a visiting professor at the </span><span>Universidade do Porto, Portugal</span><span> and was an active abroad Fulbright Scholar from 2012 to 2013 at the </span><span>Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto</span><span>.</span></p>

    <p><strong>Why did you decide to attend UMBC? </strong><span>I considered many factors before I [chose] UMBC. First, I like small colleges and because I intended to be an engineer, the only available in-state school for me was UMBC. Also, UMBC offered me several scholarships which made me even more interested [in] attending UMBC.</span></p>
    <p><strong>What’s been the most amazing discovery you’ve made so far as a student here? </strong><span>The most amazing discovery that I found as a student is [that the faculty] at UMBC really care about students’ success, [especially] for undergraduate students.</span></p>

<Title>The Fast Lane</Title>

    <img width="150" height="150" src="https://umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/s14_klausmeieringarage-150x150.jpg" alt="" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><p>Thirty-eight weekends a year, <strong>John Klausmeier ’04, mechanical engineering,</strong> gets a trackside view to NASCAR’s fiercest races, carefully watching a high performance Chevrolet SS that he has tuned sweep into the curves at nearly 200 miles per hour.</p>
    <p>Growing up, Klausmeier loved diving underneath the hoods of automobiles to find ways to make them go faster. That interest (and his time at UMBC) helped him find a career in which he travels the country’s NASCAR circuit as a lead race engineer for one of the sport’s most successful drivers – Danica Patrick – and her #10 car.</p>
    <p>Klausmeier found his passion for automobiles and how they work at his parents’ repair shop in Perry Hall. The shop was where he tinkered with carburetors and other components to figure how they worked, and how they could work better.</p>
    <p>When it came time for college, “I felt that studying engineering would be a catalyst for merging something I had as a hobby into a career,” he says.</p>

    <p>UMBC’s mechanical engineering program was a perfect place for Klausmeier to accelerate into a career in the highly competitive world of NASCAR. “I was able to gear my course work at UMBC to what I saw would help me in the industry,” he recalls. The degree gave Klausmeier a solid grounding in physics, engineering and materials science that he has applied to all aspects of automotive performance.</p>
    <p>In addition to the science, there was the software. At UMBC Klausmeier was able to train on the same software that the pit crews themselves use to monitor their fast-moving machines. The university was also an access point to an invaluable internship with NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s race team.</p>
    <p>In fact, Klausmeier’s internship led directly to a job as an aerodynamics engineer with Earnhardt after he graduated in 2004. He moved to Charlotte, N.C. – a city that many of the NASCAR racing teams call home.</p>
    <p>Klausmeier is one of the youngest lead race engineers in NASCAR, working for Stewart-Haas Racing, run by famed NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. Though Stewart-Haas maintains four teams, Klausmeier works primarily with Patrick – one of the most successful and visible drivers on the circuit and the only woman to win an IndyCar Series race – the 2008 Indy Japan 300.</p>
    <p>As lead race engineer, John tweaks the performance of Patrick’s No. 10 car, filling out a playbook using lessons learned from trial runs, wind tunnel tests and many computational simulations. Drivers are only allowed so much time to test run a car on a track, so a lot of work must be done modeling the vehicle’s behavior using a computer.</p>
    <p>As a sport, NASCAR has its roots in drivers running moonshine through back country roads, and today’s drivers still seek any edge to stay just a little ahead of each other – if not the law.</p>
    <p>“The competition has evolved,” Klausmeier observes. “You have to get to the end result a lot quicker. It’s very engineering driven.”</p>
    <p>Stewart-Haas keeps a private airplane to transport the car and the team to the next race. Each week brings a different track, with different characteristics that stress the automobile. “We’re always faced with a different problem,” says Klausmeier. “There is so much competition it is basically like having an exam every week that you have to be prepared for.”</p>
    <p>On race day, Klausmeier is a cool head in the noise and color, taking in the feedback both from Patrick behind the wheel and from what the car sensors are showing. Should the shocks or struts be adjusted? How many tires should be changed out at the next pit-stop? How much fuel should be added?</p>
    <p>Klausmeier adds that UMBC also gave him a solid work ethic along with this expertise. Both qualities – and his passion for the sport – have prepared him well for the demanding life of a traveling race car team.</p>
    <p>“If you have a good technical background and have a good hands-on approach, you’ll do well in this sport,” he says.</p>
