Do you know a UMBC student who is a writing rock star? A student who loves connecting with people and telling their stories? A student who isn’t afraid to dive in head first to a fast-paced marketing team?

The UMBC Alumni & Development Communications team is looking to hire that student. We’re excited to offer a hands-on, paid internship for the spring semester. Our interns get real-world experience conducting interviews, writing for online and print publications, and promoting events–the kind of skills that are sought after in the professional world.

Communications and Marketing Internship, Spring 2015
The Alumni & Development Communications and Marketing team is seeking an intern. This position is responsible for reporting and writing short stories for the UMBC Alumni and UMBC Giving blogs, as well as helping to compile Class Notes entries for UMBC Magazine. The ideal candidate will be a UMBC student pursuing a major in English, Media and Communication Studies or related area, and have an interest in working in the fields of journalism, marketing, or communications after graduating. The candidate should be a responsible person and a clear writer who feels comfortable contacting alumni or donors, and who holds high personal standards for accuracy.

This position will report to the offices in the UMBC Alumni House 8-15 hours per week for the Spring 2015 semester. To apply, submit a resume, cover letter, and 3-5 writing samples (you may include short form, but at least 2 must be long form). Applications may be directed to purvis@umbc.edu.

UMBC’s fiscal year ended on June 30, 2014. As we pause to reflect on accomplishments of last year, we’d like to thank the generous alumni, faculty, staff, family, and friends who make our great work possible. Because of Retriever Believers like you, our students have fantastic opportunities here at UMBC.

Throughout this fiscal year, our alumni – including 456 first-time donors – pulled together to give back $396,415, surpassing the goal for alumni by over $46,000. Parents of our students and alumni donated $143,521.02, and our wonderful faculty and staff contributed $81,399.46. Thanks to every gift, big and small, UMBC received $621,335.48, which is over $55,000 more than the fiscal year for 2013.

This March, while most college students were enjoying freedom from the classroom or even sunny days on the beach, a number of UMBC students instead chose to spend their week off from school in service learning experiences through Alternative Spring Break (ASB).

These week-long service trips introduce students to the broad range of challenges our society faces and teach them how they can help change things for the better. Thanks to donors like you, our students were volunteering and serving for projects and organizations like:

Your gifts ensured that students could take advantage of these life-changing education opportunities, so thank you! They truly will carry these memories and lessons throughout their lives.

“My ASB experience was truly memorable. I loved seeing that small actions can make an impact and I had the best time working with other students in the program,” says student Erin Wells who went on the A Better Impact trip. “I have grown so much from just one week, thank you for this opportunity.”
