As part of the “What’s in Your Academic Toolkit?” event held on Sunday, August 29, 2021, Dean Keith J Bowman along with COEIT faculty and staff welcomed nearly 400 students in the newly renovated Retriever Activity Center for the first in-person event since 2019. Shaniah Reece ‘23, information systems, reflected on her experiences as a UMBC student, CWIT Scholar, and Grand Challenge Scholar.
COEIT faculty have developed compelling new programs and recruited top students from Maryland and around the world, says Bowman. Representatives from each of the academic departments in the College, spoke with students about the various programs and tracks available to pursue. Marc Zupan, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Mark Marten, professor and chair of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering; Karuna Joshi, associate professor of information systems; Jeremy Dixon, senior lecturer of computer science, and electrical engineering; and Gary Carter, professor of computer science, and electrical engineering, spoke about some of the career and academic paths that students can pursue with the opportunities that are available at UMBC.
Cathy Bielawski, assistant dean of undergraduate student services in COEIT, talked about resources available to students at UMBC, including the Academic Success Center and the Computing Success Center.
