COEIT Advisors are available for Walk In Advising on the following dates and times:

The sign in sheet for Walk In Advising is located on the table between ITE 203 and ITE 204.
Walk in Advising is available to current Pre-Majors who need advising clearance, help with their Summer or Fall schedule, or have general questions.
Full majors are welcome to attend walk in advising if they need schedule help or have general questions, but faculty advisors must provide advising clearance.

Spring 2024 Registration Reminder
All Students can Register Winter and Spring!
All current students without holds are now eligible to register for Spring 2024 courses.
If you have not yet registered, have received advising clearance, and have no holds on your account you should register ASAP.
If you have not yet received advising clearance, please look below for directions on how to receive clearance. You can receive advising clearance even if you have other holds.
COEIT Pre-Majors at the Catonsville campus should schedule an appointment here.
Pre-majors are all first semester students (freshmen and transfer) and all students who have not yet passed their gateway.
First semester students attending the Shady Grove
campus should schedule an appointment here.
All COEIT students who have passed their gateway, are not
first semester transfer students, and have been updated to the full major will
be advised by faculty in the department. Faculty advisors are listed in
your myUMBC Profile.

Paid Summer Research Experience - international!!New Post
Are you ready to take your engineering career international
** application deadline 11/24 **
The
iPRISM program is an international paid research experience open to
3rd- and 4th-year undergraduate students. Although organized by Penn
State University Park, the program is seeking applicants from UMBC,
a partner institution in this National Science Foundation sponsored
program. Applicants are sought from the College of Engineering and
Information Technology.
The program builds on the strong partnership between the Penn State Center for
Living Multifunctional Materials Systems and the University of Freiburg
livMatS Center of
Excellence in Germany. Dr. Paris von Lockette (Professor, Mechanical
Engineering, UMBC) also has ongoing collaborations with both Penn State
and Freiburg that bring this opportunity to UMBC COEIT students.
The program leads would like to encourage underrepresented minorities in STEM to apply. The application closes on November 24th, 2023.
The
iPRISM program (6/2/2024-7/31/2024) is a fully paid summer research
internship at the University of Freiburg centered on engineered living
materials research. The selected undergraduate students will receive a
competitive stipend for their stay as well as a per diem to cover food
and incidentals, with both travel and lodging also covered by the
program. We have local University of Freiburg mentors and hosts, as well
as an iPRISM graduate student mentor to mentor the iPRISM cohort on
various research skills.

What is LaTeX?
LaTeX
is a great way to professionally write your science, or anything else
really! It gives you far more options in terms of both what you can
type, and the options you have to display it on your paper! From tons
of options on writing math and equations easily, you can number and
label anything you want to reference later, create tables, diagrams, and
more!
This is not only a great way to write up
your lab reports, but its also an industry standard for writing research
papers, publications, and creating research posters across STEM fields.
Introduction Seminar:
This
seminar will be held by Chris Bispels (PME Vice President) and is
intended as an introduction to LaTeX. If you want to get from never
having used LaTeX to doing your weekly homework, lab reports, writeups,
resumes, or research papers in LaTeX this is the place to start! We
will cover all the basics, with a focus on creating a document with
equations, tables, and images integrated into writing. There will be an
emphasis on answering your questions and making sure you become
comfortable with the fundamentals of LaTeX. Towards the end, we will
introduce the LaTeX package TikZ and some of its basic capabilities in
preparation to the second seminar in this series.
Especially helpful for those in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Science, and Chemistry and related Majors.
Advanced Seminar:
This
seminar will be held by Dr. Rostamian and is intended as an
introduction to using the package TikZ in LaTeX. If you want to expand
your LaTeX repertoire, especially if you want to be able to create
visuals, this is the place for seminar for you! We will learn the
framework of TikZ, which can be applied to a broad set of purposes, from
making graphs to creating state diagrams, even complex geometric
visualizations.
Especially helpful for those
looking to add visualizations to their writeups, including Mathematics,
Statistics, Physics, and Chemistry related majors.
What is "Learn to Write Science Beautifully"?
Across
two one hour seminars, you can go from never having opened a .tex file
to be able to complete your assignments, lab reports, research papers,
and anything else you want to make in this great document preparation
program. Even those experienced in LaTeX will have plenty to learn,
especially in the second seminar (TikZ Technical Diagrams) which will be
hosted by Dr. Rostamian and will dive in-depth on how to create
intricate and complex pictures through TikZ.
We recommend
anyone who plans to attend the second seminar to attend the first one,
as we will introduce TikZ in more detail then may be provided in the
second.

Individual Course Withdrawal/ S/U Deadline Nov 8th
Students can still Withdraw or Change to S/U Grading
Wednesday, November 8th is the deadline to withdraw from individual courses or change any course to
S/U grading for the Fall semester.
Withdrawn courses and courses utilizing S/U grading count as attempts but do not impact your GPA.
Withdrawing from individual courses can be done via the Schedule and Registration system in myUMBC. S/U grading requires the submission of a Help Ticket. Information about S/U grading and the link to submit the Help Ticket can be found
here.
If withdrawing from one or more courses will bring you to less than full time status (12 credits) there may be impacts in other areas such as
scholarship,
financial aid, and
on-campus housing. Questions about those areas should be directed to the appropriate office.
Students can withdraw from the entire semester though the last day of classes, December 13th. Full semester withdrawals can have serious impacts on other areas and should always be discussed with an advisor.

Important Spring Registration Information!
Please read carefully.
Spring Registration for undergraduate
students will start October 31st- November 17th. Students must have advising clearance in order to register for Spring 2024 courses. Your
specific date will be based on the number of credits you have earned. Students
should plan to meet with an advisor a few weeks before their earliest
registration time.
