Quantitative Reasoning: Measurement and Skills Lab

This interdisciplinary science laboratory course will expose students to
different science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
disciplines through a series of modules and projects centered on the common
theme of measurement. All projects require mastering basic quantitative
skills, high-order reasoning, and the practical use of laboratory
measurement tools.

This course is also designed to prepare students for upper level laboratory
and research-based courses by providing them with a foundation for
understanding the scientific process and improving their scientific writing
skills.

Prior to your appointment:
1.    Please review your scheduling options by looking over the schedule of classes, available starting on October 26th, on the UMBC website HERE.
2.    Review your degree audit – major and general education/foundation requirements, so that you are aware of the courses still needed to complete your degree requirements. Learn more about your degree audit HERE.
3.    Review the sample 4-year plan for your major to determine where you are in the recommended sequence of courses. HERE
4.    Check the Gateway requirements for your major and determine where you are in relation to the completion of this requirement. HERE
5.    Come prepared to your appointment with a list of courses you intend to take in Spring 2016.

After your advising appointment, you will have clearance to register for classes. However, you will not be able to register until your assigned registration time. Your registration time is the earliest date and time that you may register for classes. For information about registration times, please go HERE, or check the banner on the top of your myUMBC page. If you have not attended an advising appointment, you will not be able to register when your registration time occurs.

If you have a hold on your account, it is still important that you sign up for an advising appointment. Meeting with an advisor in advance of registration means that you will not have to worry about getting advising clearance once your hold is lifted.

The Generac tractor trailer that will provide the demonstration/learning experience is set up as a small classroom (16-seats) with hands-on demonstrations of generator operations. Interested students and faculty are welcome to attend.

The demonstration will simulate a power outage; demonstrate parallel generator operation and control; explain software capabilities for monitoring and control; explain features of the 600 kW bi-fuel generator (natural gas and diesel fuel); and provide an overview of power solutions available from Generac.

The demonstration will occur on Friday, October 30, 2015, in Lot 26 behind the TRC Building. The Generac tractor trailer is scheduled to arrive at 12:30 PM. A second demonstration will take place at 1:30pm.

All students must meet with an advisor to receive registration clearance for spring classes. Your registration date will be posted in myUMBC at the top of the page. In order to register on this date, you must meet with an advisor prior to this date to get registration clearance. Students do not need special clearance to register for winter classes. Winter registration opens for all students on October 26th.

Please read the instructions below for information about how to sign up for your advising appointment. There are different instructions depending on whether you have completed the gateway requirements for your major. Please read through this entire message.

If you are currently enrolled in LRC 99, MATH 106, or do not have a math placement, you will be advised by the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising in the Academic Services Building.

Prior to your appointment:
1.    Please review your scheduling options by looking over the schedule of classes, available starting on October 26th, on the UMBC website HERE.
2.    Review your degree audit – major and general education/foundation requirements, so that you are aware of the courses still needed to complete your degree requirements. Learn more about your degree audit HERE.
3.    Review the sample 4-year plan for your major to determine where you are in the recommended sequence of courses. HERE
4.    Check the Gateway requirements for your major and determine where you are in relation to the completion of this requirement. HERE
5.    Come prepared to your appointment with a list of courses you intend to take in Spring 2016.

After your advising appointment, you will have clearance to register for classes. However, you will not be able to register until your assigned registration time. Your registration time is the earliest date and time that you may register for classes. For information about registration times, please go HERE, or check the banner on the top of your myUMBC page. If you have not attended an advising appointment, you will not be able to register when your registration time occurs.

If you have a hold on your account, it is still important that you sign up for an advising appointment. Meeting with an advisor in advance of registration means that you will not have to worry about getting advising clearance once your hold is lifted.

Computer Engineering and Computer Science
Students majoring in Pre-Computer Science/Computer Science, Pre-Computer Engineering/Computer Engineering who have not completed the gateway requirements must meet with an academic advisor in the office of Undergraduate Student Services in the College of Engineering and Information Technology.  Location:  ITE Building Rooms 202-206.  Phone:  410-455-3096.  Advising staff:  Josh Abrams (josh.abrams@umbc.edu), Anne Arey (annearey@umbc.edu), and Emily Stephens (eastephe@umbc.edu). Students may sign up for an individual appointment or participate in group advising.  Group advising and individual advising require approximately 30 minutes of your time.  Group advising gives you the opportunity to review your registration plans with multiple advisors in a small group setting.  Individual appointments give you the opportunity to meet with an advisor one-on-one.

Please note that you must schedule the appointment online while at the UMBC campus. You will need to select a group or individual appointment. Sign-ups for group advising will begin on October 7th for appointments beginning on October 12th. Students on academic probation are required to sign up for an individual advising appointment. They may not attend group advising.

Computer Engineering and Computer Science students who have completed the gateway will be assigned a faculty advisor.  Faculty assignments are posted outside of ITE 204. Students may also view their advisor information in myUMBC. To access this information, follow these steps:
•    Login to myUMBC
•    Select “Topics”
•    Select “Advising and Student Support”
•    Select “My Advisors”

Please contact your faculty advisor to schedule an advising appointment.
Transfer students in their first semester at UMBC, regardless of gateway status, will need to sign up for an appointment at the link provided above.
