    <p>The European project <a href="http://www.sartre-project.eu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">SARTRE</a> focuses on an alternative to single, completely autonomous vehicles such as those developed at <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2010/10/what-were-driving-at.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Google</a> by <a href="http://www.robotspodcast.com/podcast/2007/09/talking-robots-probabilistic-robotics-and-the-darpa-challenges/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Sebastian Thrun</a> or those of the autonomous taxi developed by the <a href="http://www.autonomos.inf.fu-berlin.de/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">AutoNOMOS Project</a> or by the <a href="http://www.autonomos.inf.fu-berlin.de/technology/made-in-germany" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MadeInGermany </a>project, both by <a title="Raul Rojas" href="http://www.robotspodcast.com/podcast/2010/11/robots-autonomous-vehicles/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Raúl Rojas</a>. Instead, SARTRE develops road trains - convoys of vehicles that autonomously follow a lead vehicle driven by a professional driver.</p>
    <p>Such vehicle platoons function much like an improved version of adaptive cruise control, matching a car's movements to the distance, speed, and the direction of the car in front. Once in a platoon, this allows drivers to relax and do other things like reading or even taking a nap while the platoon drives toward its long distance destination.</p>
    <p>SARTRE has now shown what this could look like in a real-world demonstration of a single autonomous car following a human-driven test vehicle in highway conditions.</p>

Most of these are outside the US, but there are 79 <a href="http://www.eduroamus.org/eduroam_us_institutions" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">eduroam sites in the US</a>, including (in the mid-atlantic ares) UMCP, UMUC, UMB, Morgan State, Georgetown, UPenn, Temple, Drexel, Swarthmore, Princeton, UVA, PSU and Pitt.  Just look for the wifi access point named eduroam.</div>

    <div class="html-content">The device doesn't look like much: a caterpillar-sized assembly of metal rings and strips resembling something you might find buried in a home-workshop drawer. But the technology behind it, and the long-range possibilities it represents, are quite remarkable.
    
    The little device is called a milli-motein — a name melding its millimeter-sized components and a motorized design inspired by proteins, which naturally fold themselves into incredibly complex shapes. This minuscule robot may be a harbinger of future devices that could fold themselves up into almost any shape imaginable. 
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The device was conceived by Neil Gershenfeld, head of MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms, visiting scientist Ara Knaian and graduate student Kenneth Cheung, and is described in a paper presented recently at the 2012 Intelligent Robots and Systems conference. Its key feature, Gershenfeld says: "It's effectively a one-dimensional robot that can be made in a continuous strip, without conventionally moving parts, and then folded into arbitrary shapes."

<Title>61-year-old computer rebooted, works</Title>

    <div>The Witch, as the machine is known, has been restored to clattering and flashing life in a three-year effort.  In its heyday in the 1950s the machine was the workhorse of the UK's atomic energy research programme.  A happy accident led to its discovery in a municipal storeroom where it had languished for 15 years.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The machine will make its official public debut at a special ceremony at The National Museum of Computing (TNMOC) in Bletchley Park on 20 November. Attending the unveiling will be some of its creators as well as staff that used it and students who cut their programming teeth on the machine.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Design and construction work on the machine began in 1949 and it was built to aid scientists working at the UK's Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell in Oxfordshire. The 2.5 tonne machine was created to ease the burden on scientists by doing electronically the calculations that previously were done using adding machines.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The machine cranked through the boring calculations atomic scientists once had to do The machine first ran in 1951 and was known as the Harwell Dekatron - so named for the valves it used as a memory store. Although slow - the machine took up to 10 seconds to multiply two numbers - it proved very reliable and often cranked up 80 hours of running time in a week.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>By 1957 the machine was being outstripped by faster, smaller computers and it was handed over to the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College (more recently Wolverhampton University) where it was used to teach programming and began to be called the Witch (Wolverhampton Instrument for Teaching Computation from Harwell).</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>In 1973 it was donated to Birmingham's Museum of Science and Industry and was on show for 24 years until 1997 when the museum closed and the machine was dismantled and put into storage.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>By chance Kevin Murrell, one of the TNMOC's trustees, spotted the control panel of the Witch in a photograph taken by another computer conservationist who had been in the municipal store seeking components for a different machine.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Mr Murrell said that as a "geeky teenager" he had regularly seen the Witch during many trips to the museum and instantly recognised its parts in the background of the photograph.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>On subsequent trips to the storage facility the various parts of the Witch were found, retrieved and then taken to the museum at Bletchley where restoration began.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>The restoration effort was led by conservationist Delwyn Holroyd who said it was "pretty dirty" when the machine first arrived at Bletchley. Remarkably, he said, it had not suffered too much physical damage and the restoration team has been at pains to replace as little as possible. The vast majority of the parts on the machine, including its 480 relays and 828 Dekatron tubes, are entirely original, he said. </div>

    <p>A free screening of the new film <a href="http://www.turingfilm.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Codebreaker</a> will be shown on Thursday, November 29 at 5:30pm in <a href="http://events.jhu.edu/HodsonHall" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Hodson Auditorium</a> at johns Hopkins University. The screening will be followed by a reception and question and answer session with the film's executive producer, Patrick Sammon.</p>
    <p>Codebreaker tells the remarkable and tragic story of one of the 20th century's most important people. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Alan Turing</a> set in motion the digital revolution and his World War II codebreaking helped turn the tide of war. This maverick British genius is one of the most important scientists ever, yet few people have heard his name, know his story, or understand his legacy. Historians say by breaking the Nazis' Naval <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enigma_machine" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Enigma</a> code, Turing helped shorten the Second World War by two years, saving millions of lives. As the founding father of computer science and artificial intelligence, Alan Turing envisioned our digital world long before anyone else. Built on a solid historical foundation of true events, Turing is our storyteller as he defiantly searches for answers.     <div>Stanford University biology professor Deborah Gordon loves ants. She's got pictures of them on her walls, sculptures of them on her desk, and about 8 000 live ants running around her lab. She's been studying them for more than 20 years. Recently, when she came to understand how colonies of harvester ants regulate foraging, that is, how they decide how fast to send out ant to gather food, she thought that the ant algorithm could apply to other types of networks.

    <div class="html-content">In this video, the Pet-Proto, a predecessor to DARPA's Atlas robot, is confronted with obstacles similar to those robots might face in the <a href="http://www.darpa.mil/Our_Work/TTO/Programs/DARPA_Robotics_Challenge.aspx" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">DARPA Robotics Challenge</a> (DRC). To maneuver over and around the obstacles, the robot exercises capabilities including autonomous decision-making, dismounted mobility and dexterity. The DARPA Robotics Challenge will test these and other capabilities in a series of tasks that will simulate conditions in a dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environment. Teams participating in Tracks B and C of the DRC will compete for access to a modified version of the Atlas robot for use in the 2013 and 2014 live disaster-response challenge events. </div>

    The night sky is filled with many stars and looking through a telescope reveals even more of them.  In an infinite universe, there should to be star in every direction you look. <div><br></div>
    <div>That the night-time sky is mostly dark is known as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olbers'_paradox" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Olbers' paradox</a>.  This short video does a good job of explaining why we experience darkness at night.</div>

<Title>SmoothLife: a continuous version of Conway's Game of Life</Title>

    <div class="html-content">SmoothLife is a family of rules created by Stephan Rafler. It was designed as a continuous version of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway's_Game_of_Life" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Conway's Game of Life</a> - using floating point values instead of integers. This rule is SmoothLifeL which supports many interesting phenomena such as gliders that can travel in any direction, rotating pairs of gliders, wickstretchers and the appearance of elastic tension in the 'cords' that join the blobs. <div><ul>
