    <div class="html-content"><p><span>This is the latest in food-related </span><span>achievements</span><span> from TUM's </span><a href="http://ias.cs.tum.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Intelligent Autonomous Systems Group</a><span>, which is part of the </span><a href="http://www.willowgarage.com/pages/pr2/pr2-community" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">PR2 Beta Program</a><span>. <Title>Four Robots Begin Historic Swim Across Pacific</Title>

    On 17 November 2011 four <a href="http://liquidr.com/technology/wave-glider-concept/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Wave Gliders</a> left San Francisco for a 60,000 kilometer journey across the Pacific Ocean. The self-propelled robots, built by <a href="http://liquidr.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Liquid Robotics</a>, will travel together to Hawaii, then split into pairs, one pair heading to Japan, the other to Australia. Waves will power their propulsion systems and the sun will power the sensors that will be measuring things like water salinity, temperature, clarity, and oxygen content; collecting weather data, and gathering information on wave features and currents.<div><br></div>

    <p>UMBC Professor <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Sherman" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Alan Sherman</a>, UMBC alumnus Rick Carback (Ph.D. 2010) and many former and current UMBC students helped to develop <a href="https://scantegrity.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Scantegrity</a>, an an open source election verification technology for optical scan voting systems. In 2009, their Scantegrity II voting system was used in the election of the mayor and city council members of Takoma Park, Maryland. This was an historic first time any end-to-end voter verifiable voting system with ballot privacy has been used in a binding governmental election.</p>
    <p>This week, absentee voters in Takoma Park, Maryland will have the option to cast their votes for mayor and city council using a new Internet voting system called <a href="http://scantegrity.org/wiki/index.php/Remotegrity_Frequently_Asked_Questions#What_is_Remotegrity.3F" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Remotegrity</a> which uses the same approach of generating privacy preserving confirmation numbers that allow each voter to verify her vote is counted and anyone to verify that all the votes were counted correctly.  Dr. Carback has played a significant role in helping Takoma Park adopt and use Scantegrity and Remotegrity in the municipal elections.</p>
    
    <p>Internet voting has been used to elect government officials before (for example, in Switzerland, Estonia, and Norway), but what is new here is that voters mail in paper ballots and use the Internet to independently verify that their votes have been received by the city and recorded correctly. Anyone can check online that the recorded votes were tallied correctly.</p>
    <p>Dr. Filip Zagorski, computer scientist at The George Washington University, explains ÒThrough the hybrid use of paper ballots and Internet verification, Remotegrity combines the best of both worlds to provide a very high degree of security even against malware and insider attack.Ó Portions of the underlying research in cryptography and secure server design were supported by the National Science Foundation and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.</p>
    <p>Voters who have requested to vote by mail receive a ballot which they mark and mail in, but they can also verify their vote on-line in the Remotegrity system, without revealing how they voted. In future elections, the same online procedure may cast votes and physical mailing of paper ballots may be optional or omitted.</p>
    <p>The city will also use the Scantegrity voting system for voters who cast their ballot in person, as it did in 2009. The integrated Scantegrity and Remotegrity systems offer full end-to-end voter-verifiability, in which voters casting ballots from home or in person can verify that their votes were correctly cast, collected, and counted.</p>
    <p>Additionally, this year, the city will provide an audio interface for marking ballots. The interface, named Audiotegrity, developed by researchers at The George Washington University, will enable voters with difficulty marking paper ballots to mark ballots independently using an electronic interface. Mr. Noel Runyan, a usability and accessibility expert, provided pro bono design advice to the Audiotegrity team.</p>
    <p>With a grant from the federal Election Assistance Commission, and support from the non-profit Voting Systems Institute, researchers from UMBC will survey voters and election officials as well as conduct focus groups around their experiences using these new voting systems.</p>

We have divided the IT service lifecycle into the five phases of requirements, discovery, negotiation, composition, and consumption. We detail each phase and describe the high level ontologies that we have developed to describe them. Our research complements previous work on ontologies for service descriptions in that it goes beyond simple matchmaking and is focused on supporting negotiation for the particulars of IT services.</div>

Thanks to the internet, we now live—more and more—in public. More than 750 million people (and half of all Americans) use Facebook, where we share a billion times a day. The collective voice of Twitter echoes instantly 100 million times daily, from Tahrir Square to the Mall of America, on subjects that range from democratic reform to unfolding natural disasters to celebrity gossip. </div>

    <p>This is part one of a three part series on the keynote presentation by Sebastian Thrun and Chris Urmson on self-driving cars at the 2011 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems.</p>
    <p>Most of us use a car every day. But unlike airplanes, which have been flying on autopilots for decades, cars are still driven manually - just the way they were driven 100 years ago. This talk introduces the transformative concept of a self-driving car. Following early research in the 1990 in Germany and the US, and more recently the DARPA Challenges, this technology has now been advanced to a point where it is within reach of commercial realizations that may provide benefits to pretty much anyone who drives a car. At the core of this progress is a new generation of cutting-edge artificial intelligence, which enables a self-driving car to understand its environment and to interact with other traffic.</p>
    <p>The speaker discusses the Google Self-Driving Car project, in which a fleet of self-driving cars navigated more than 160,000 miles on public roads in California and Nevada, including the downtowns of San Francisco and Los Angeles. The speaker also discusses some of the societal implications of this new technology.</p>

    <p><span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell_Labs" title="Bell Labs" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Bell Labs</a>, frustrated by the size and complexity of Multics but not the aims, slowly pulled out of the project. At the time, Ritchie says "What we wanted to preserve was not just a good environment in which to do programming, but a system around which a fellowship could form. <Title>Charles Babbage's Difference Engine #2</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Charles Babbage (1791-1871), computer pioneer, designed the first automatic computing engines. Augusta Ada King was an English writer who worked with Charles Babbage's designs and wrote what is recognized as the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine. Unfortunately the designs for  Difference Engine #2 were never realized while either was alive.  <div><br></div>
    <div>The first complete Babbage Engine was completed in London in 2002, 153 years after it was designed. Difference Engine No. 2, built faithfully to the original drawings, consists of 8,000 parts, weighs five tons, and measures 11 feet long. <div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>In London, during the summer of 1821, Charles Babbage, inventor and mathematician, is poring over a set of astronomical tables calculated by hand. Finding error after error he finally exclaims 'I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam'. His appeal to machinery, in one of the most resonant utterances of the 19th century, was the start of a new era of automatic computation.

    <div>It was not only the grindingly tedious labor of verifying a sea of figures that exasperated Babbage, but their daunting unreliability. Engineering, astronomy, construction, finance, banking and insurance depended on printed tables for calculation. Ships navigating by the stars relied on printed tables to find their position at sea. The stakes were high. Capital and life were thought to be at risk. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Babbage embarked on an ambitious venture to design and build mechanical calculating engines to eliminate the risk of human error in the production of printed tables. The 'unerring certainty of machinery' would solve the problem of human fallibility. His work on the engines led him from mechanized arithmetic to the entirely new realm of automatic computation.  Tabular errors provided a practical stimulus. But this was not his only motive. He also saw his engines as a new technology of mathematics.
    Babbage himself failed to build a complete calculating engine and his designs remained an historical curiosity for over 150 years.

    <div>Finally, in 2002, the first full-size Babbage Engine (Difference Engine No. 2), built faithfully to the original designs, was completed at the Science Museum in London, the culmination of a seventeen year project. The Engine consists of 8,000 parts, weighs 5 tons and measures eleven feet long and seven feet high. It works as Babbage intended, and brings to a close an anguished chapter in the prehistory of computing.
