<Title>Fall 2012 Mechanical Engineering Co-ops with Emerson</Title>

    <div class="html-content">Kop-Flex, operating since 1926, is a division of the Emerson Electric Co. which manufactures flexible rotating couplings for industrial applications. Located just 9 miles from UMBC near BWI, Kop-Flex offers students the opportunity to gain experience in mechanical design and manufacturing. Kop-Flex offers excellent opportunities for advancement, currently 7 of 13 engineers are former co-ops. <br><br>Co-ops will work closely with Product Engineers &amp; mentors in the design of mechanical couplings. They will apply engineering knowledge to perform stress analysis, calculate coupling mass elastic data, produce coupling drawings, develop new and innovative products, and manage engineering projects. Project management may provide opportunities to interact with VP’s, managers, and customers. They will have the opportunity to interact with global employees and customers.<br><br>Research &amp; Development – Support new product development and product improvement projects. Support product development engineers with design of experiments, implementing testing, and development of productivity tools.<br><br>Mill Product – Support design engineers with the design of heavy industrial couplings for steel mills, paper mills, and mining equipment. Support product development to improve coupling designs for heavy industrial couplings. <br><br>High Performance – Support engineers with the design of turbomachinery couplings for gas turbines, compressors, motors, and generators.  Support product development to improve coupling designs for turbomachinery couplings. <br><br>Required Credentials:<br><br>Mechanical engineering students, preferably 3rd year students willing to work F/T and take a semester off.  Will accept students part-time who can commit to at least 25 hrs per week.<br><br>Applications will be reviewed as they are received - apply early for best consideration.<br><br>Requested Skills:<br><br>Preferably co-ops have an understanding of mechanical design, stress analysis, materials, and vibration analysis.     array of services to seniors, generally to those over the age of 75. 
    Care segments are commonly divided into four categories: independent 
    living, assisted living, memory care and nursing care. Nursing care has 
    typically been provided in an institutional-style setting, though there 
    is a growing movement toward more home-like surroundings. The other care
     segments are typically provided in a multifamily setting.
    <p><br></p>
    <p>Seniors housing and care properties also including continuing care 
    retirement communities (CCRCs), which typically offer all care segments,
     including independent living, assisted living and nursing care.</p>
    <p>In the United States, there currently are approximately 21,100 
    investment-grade seniors housing and care properties containing nearly 
    2.8 million units. “Investment grade” is defined as those age-restricted
     properties with at least 25 units/beds that charge market rates for the
     housing and services offered. The total market capitalization of this 
    investment-grade seniors housing and care property market is estimated 
    between $230 billion and $260 billion.</p>

<Title>Josiah Dykstra and Han Dong awarded for best Computer Science research</Title>

    <p><a href="http://www.csee.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/headshot.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img alt="" src="http://www.csee.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/headshot.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a>Congratulations to CSEE graduate students <span><strong>Josiah Dykstra</strong> (Computer Science, Ph.D.) and <strong>Han Dong</strong> (Computer Science, M.S.) for winning the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) Department's 2011-2012 awards for best research by a Ph.D. student and best research by an M.S. student, respectively. </span></p>
    <p>Winners were chosen based on the scientific merit (significance, originality, notriviality, correctness) and the writing style of their research papers.</p>
    <p>Josiah's (pictured left) research, entitled "Acquiring Forensic Evidence from Infrastructure-as-a-Service Cloud Computing: Exploring and Evaluating Tools, Trust, and Techniques", deals with digital forensics for cloud computing, including frameworks, tools, and legal analysis to facilitate forensic investigations of remote Infrastructure-as-a-Service clouds.     <p>Han's (pictured right) research, entitled "Cross-Platform OpenCL Code and Performance Portability for CPU and GPU Architectures Investigated with a Climate and Weather Physics Model", investigates the portability of OpenCL across CPU and GPU architectures in terms of code and performance via a</p>
    <p><a href="http://www.csee.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/HanDongcropped.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img alt="" src="http://www.csee.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/HanDongcropped.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a>representative NASA GEOS-5 climate and weather physics model. Han discovered that OpenCL's vector-oriented programming paradigm assists compilers with implicit vectorization and creates significant performance gains.
