    <p>Starting this May, a series of wildfires in Eastern Canada sent enormous smoke clouds wafting into the U.S., triggering air quality warnings in cities from the Midwest to the Northeast. For days, orange skies backdropped landscapes clouded by acrid air. People who could hunkered inside with the doors and windows shut. Those who had to go out faced itchy eyes, burning throats, and worse.</p>
    <p>As a resident of the Baltimore area—which was blanketed with particularly bad smoke in both early and late June—UMBC Professor <strong><a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/christopher-hennigan/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Chris Hennigan</a></strong> looked at the haze with dismay. But as an environmental engineer who studies air pollution, he had an additional thought: “We were looking at the air quality forecasts, and we thought ‘We have to gather data,’” he says.</p>
    <p>The public found many colorful words to describe the summer’s unwanted smoke: brutal, eerie, dystopian.</p>
    <p>Hennigan and his team have been working to put numbers to the adjectives. On the roof of the engineering building, the researchers installed a squat, white sensor that monitors the levels of tiny particles in the air, particularly those measuring 2.5 micrometers in diameter or less—smaller than most bacteria. Called PM<sub>2.5</sub>, these particles are released in large numbers during fires. They are dangerous to human health because they can work their way into the deepest parts of the lungs and even enter the bloodstream.</p>

    <p>The <a href="https://map.purpleair.com/1/a/b/l/i/lt/mAQI/a0/p604800/cC0#12.9/39.25413/-76.73356" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">sensor</a> showed huge spikes in PM<sub>2.5</sub> when the smoke blew through, on some days reaching levels considered unhealthy for anyone to breathe.</p>
    <p>The researchers also set up equipment to filter particles out of the air. After 24 hours, they collected the filters, which they are storing, neatly labeled, in a refrigerator in Hennigan’s lab.</p>

    <p>The filtered samples will advance at least two ongoing investigations, Hennigan says. In one avenue of inquiry, <strong>Joel Tyson</strong>, Ph.D. ’23, biochemical engineering, is studying how tiny particles can harm human lung cells. Before this year’s smoky summer, Tyson had been studying the toxic effects of particulate matter normally found in the Baltimore air. With the new smoke samples, he will start to investigate whether wildfire smoke particles, per unit, are more toxic than regular urban particulate matter, which comes from sources such as cars and power plants. <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-21708-0" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Some studies</a> have indicated that wildfire particulate matter is indeed more toxic, but more research is needed before any definitive conclusions can be reached.</p>
    <p>In another line of research, Hennigan is also studying how particles in the air, including from smoke, may affect the climate. Undergraduate chemical engineering students <strong>Danielle Larios </strong>’25 and<strong> Luis Rodriguez</strong> ’25 are assisting in the investigations.</p>
    <p>The researchers study how particles of brown-colored carbon-containing material absorb light. Burning vegetation sends large amounts of this <a href="https://www.anl.gov/evs/brown-carbon-aerosols" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">brown carbon</a> into the atmosphere. It’s possible that the particles are trapping significant heat from the sun, accelerating the pace of planetary warming. Such effects are not normally included in global climate models, and better understanding of the process could improve humanity’s ability to predict, and manage, the coming years of climate upheaval.</p>

    <p>Climate change and wildfires are intimately linked. This summer was not only smoky, but also scorching. July marked the hottest month ever recorded, and scientists predict that as the world continues to warm, wildfires will continue to increase in quantity and intensity. “Smokeageddon,” as headlines put it, may become the new normal.</p>
    <p>Hennigan says recent research illuminates how much wildfire smoke has contributed to air pollution trends. He points to <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-02794-0" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">a paper</a> published in September in the scientific journal <em>Nature</em> that estimated that since 2016, wildfire smoke in the contiguous United States has undone around 25% of the progress in air quality made between 2000 and 2016.</p>
    <p>For the researchers in Hennigan’s lab, those effects have been felt personally. </p>
    <p>Rodriguez recalled how in June he had to go out to buy a fresh pack of N95 masks. “The smoke was just awful,” he says. Larios says she felt a burning at the back of her throat in just 15 minutes walking to her car.</p>
    <p>For Tyson, the effects of the smoke were so bad that at one point he struggled to breathe and had to visit the doctor. The episode, he says, drove home the importance of his toxicology research.</p>
    <p>All three note both the complexity of the systems they are studying and the importance of discovering new knowledge that might help society handle the environmental challenges it faces.</p>
    <p>“Our work can have real-world impact, and that’s exciting,” says Larios.</p>

    <div>Representation learning aims at extracting relevant information from data to represent input in a way that is sufficient for performing a task. Specifically, this problem is difficult when the data under consideration is both sequential and discrete such as in natural language processing (NLP). From classical methods like topic modeling to modern transformer-based architectures one seeks to utilize the available information from data or transferable knowledge to learn richer representations. To that end, recent advances in current state-of-the-art models rely on two major strategies. a) Latent Knowledge Gathering , where we encourage a model to recognize semantic and thematically-relevant knowledge contained within the training data. Methods include clustering techniques like topic modeling and document classification. b) Injecting Background Information, where the goal is to exploit structural or representational priors, such as pretrained models or word embeddings to facilitate the training phase. Irrespective of the architecture or task, the training process invariably begins with the encoding of high-dimensional documents into more manageable, low-dimensional latent representations. We advocate for these representations to be optimized to capture and utilize more pertinent information, enhancing their efficacy in various language-based tasks. Considering document classification as an example of semantic analysis, both the encoder and decoder are vital in extracting essential information from inputs, especially when dealing with limited training data. Our extensive experiments assess the capabilities of models across various data regimes, highlighting the importance of efficient representation in handling the situation entity classification task. In thematic analysis, despite notable advancements, many previous studies have overlooked the extraction of valuable word-level information, such as latent thematic topics pertinent to each word. Additionally, the use of auxiliary knowledge has often been confined to basic applications like weight initialization. Some methods have simplified the process by merely appending external knowledge to the input. Nonetheless, the effective utilization of information whether derived directly from the data or leveraged from background knowledge remains a critical factor in document representation. It is essential to ensure that the process of information gathering does not compromise the richness of the original data.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>First, we offer a novel lightweight unsupervised design that shows how to use topic models in conjunction with recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with minimal word-level information loss.  Our approach maintains and uses lower-level representations that previous approaches had discarded, and then it gathers and provides that information to a natural language generation model. We conduct extensive experiments to compare the efficiency of the proposed model with previous proposed architectures. The results demonstrate that retaining and exploiting word topic assignments, previously overlooked, leads to new state-of-the-art performance in thematic analysis.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Second, we consider how background (or side) knowledge can be used to guide model and representation learning of text. This side knowledge can itself be structured, and may often be given categorically. However, the sources of side knowledge can be incomplete, meaning that the side knowledge may be structured, but partially observed. This poses challenges for learning. To handle this, we first focus on incomplete partially observed side knowledge. We propose using a structured, discrete, semi-supervised variational autoencoder framework, which uses provided side knowledge to represent the original input text. This method is intricately designed to use the partially observed knowledge as a guiding tool, without imposing limitations on the training phase. We show that our approach can robustly handle varying levels of side knowledge observation, and leads to consistent performance gains across multiple language modeling and classification metrics.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Ultimately, we delve into scenarios where side knowledge is not just incomplete but also contains noise. In this context, we introduce a universal framework for integrating discrete information, based on the information bottleneck principle. This framework involves a thorough theoretical exploration of how side information can be integrated into model parameters. Our extensive theoretical analysis and empirical studies, including a case study on event modeling, show that our approach not only extends and refines previous methods but also significantly enhances performance. The proposed framework lays a robust theoretical groundwork for future research in this domain.</div>

    <div><strong>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:</strong></div>
    <div>For the 2023-24 school year I am interning with the US Geological Survey through Virtual Student Federal Service.  I have been researching the ecology and geography of National Parks to be shown on the USGS website.  I just recently finished my first write-up on New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and am now beginning Catoctin Mountain Park.  Since the internship is completely virtual, I check in with a mentor every week, who guides me through the writing and research process. </div>

    <div><strong>Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</strong></div>
    <div>I had heard about VSFS through social media and applied over the summer to one of their internships.  There were so many to choose from-lots of opportunities! </div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div><strong>What resources did you use to find your current experience?</strong></div>

    <div><strong>What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?</strong></div>
    <div>I get to research the places I want to travel to and obtain college credit at the same time. </div>

    <div><strong>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</strong></div>
    <div>I hope to educate folks on the little parts of National Parks that go unnoticed, like flora, fauna, rocks, minerals, etc. </div>

    <div><strong>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</strong></div>
    <div>A virtual internship gives you great experiences while still allowing you to focus mainly on your school work.  Do not overlook a virtual internship just because it’s virtual.</div>

    <div>I enjoy getting to work independently to produce information for the public.  Educating the public on the importance of our environment is vital. </div>

    <strong>Abstract:</strong><span>  This talk explores advancements in multimodal retrieval and generation across general and biomedical domains. The first work introduces a multimodal retriever and reader pipeline for vision-based question answering, using image-text queries to retrieve and interpret relevant textual knowledge. The second work simplifies this approach with an efficient end-to-end retrieval model, removing dependencies on intermediate models like object detectors. The final part presents a biomedical-focused multimodal generation model, capable of classifying and explaining labels in images with text prompts. Together, these works demonstrate significant progress in integrating visual and textual data processing in diverse applications.</span><br><br><strong>Bio:</strong><span>  <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/man-luo-a7aa57178/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Dr Man Luo</strong></a> is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic with Dr. Imon Banerjee and Dr. Bhavik Patel. Her research is at the intersection of information retrieval and reading comprehension within natural language processing (NLP) and multimodal domains, to retrieve and utilize external knowledge with efficiency and generalization. Currently she is interested in knowledge retrieval, multimodal understanding, and applications of LLMs and VLMs in biomedical/healthcare applications. She earned her Ph.D. in 2023 from Arizona State University advised by Dr. Chitta Baral, and has collaborated with industrial research labs at Salesforce, Meta, and Google.</span>

    <div>As machine learning systems are increasingly deployed in real-world settings like healthcare, finance, and scientific applications, ensuring their safety and reliability is crucial. However, many state-of-the-art ML models still suffer from issues like poor out-of-distribution generalization, sensitivity to input corruptions, requiring large amounts of data, and inadequate calibration - limiting their robustness and trustworthiness for critical real-world applications.  In this talk, I will first present a broad overview of different safety considerations for modern ML systems. I will then proceed to discuss our recent efforts in making ML models safer from two complementary perspectives - (i) manipulating data and (ii) enriching the model capabilities by developing novel training mechanisms.  I will discuss our work on designing new data augmentation techniques for object detection followed by demonstrating how, in the absence of data from desired target domains of interest, one could leverage pre-trained generative models for efficient synthetic data generation.  Next, I will present a new paradigm of training deep networks called model anchoring and show how one could achieve similar properties to an ensemble but through a single model. I will specifically discuss how model anchoring can significantly enrich the class of hypothesis functions being sampled and demonstrate its effectiveness through its improved performance on several safety benchmarks. I will conclude by highlighting exciting future research directions for producing robust ML models through leveraging multi-modal foundation models.</div>

    <strong><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/kowshik-thopalli/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Kowshik Thopalli </a></strong>is a Machine Learning Scientist and a post-doctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. His research focuses on developing reliable machine learning models that are robust under distribution shifts. He has published papers on a variety of techniques to address model robustness, including domain adaptation, domain generalization, and test-time adaptation using geometric and meta-learning approaches. His expertise also encompasses integrating diverse knowledge sources, such as domain expert guidance and generative models, to improve model data efficiency, accuracy, and resilience to distribution shifts.  He received his Ph.D. in 2023 from Arizona State University.</div>

    <div>We present an automatic tool for binding formal network protocol specifications to their underlying cryptographic contexts, eliminating harmful protocol interactions, including Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attacks. Operating in the strand space model, our tool takes as input an arbitrary two-party protocol specification, infers a cryptographic context from the protocol terms, and outputs a specification for an improved protocol that is the composition of the input protocol and our novel context-exchange protocol.  Our context-exchange protocol binds cryptographic values to a unique session, using a Merkle hash tree to represent context.  Our tool applies the following operations on context: initialize, append, sign, and verify. For each input protocol specification, our tool outputs context-equivalence security goals, which we then verify using the Cryptographic Protocol Shapes Analyzer (CPSA). To our knowledge, our tool is the first of its kind. It represents a significant step towards eliminating attacks resulting from unwanted protocol interactions, which are the cause for most known structural weaknesses in protocols.
