Check out the following books that our Women's Center Advisory Board selected as their top suggestions:

Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall
Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. That feminists refuse to prioritize these issues has only exacerbated the age-old problem of both internecine discord and women who rebuff at carrying the title. Moreover, prominent white feminists broadly suffer from their own myopia with regard to how things like race, class, sexual orientation, and ability intersect with gender. How can we stand in solidarity as a movement, Kendall asks, when there is the distinct likelihood that some women are oppressing others?

We Will Not Cancel Us by adrienne maree brown
In We Will Not Cancel Us, movement mediator adrienne maree brown reframes the discussion for us, in a way that points to possible paths beyond our impasse. Most critiques of cancel culture come from outside the milieus that produce it, sometimes even from its targets. Brown explores the question from a Black, queer, and feminist viewpoint that gently asks, how well does this practice serve us? Does it prefigure the sort of world we want to live in? And, if it doesn’t, how do we seek accountability and redress for harm in ways that reflect our values?

You Are Your Best Thing edited by Tarana Tarana Burke and Dr. Brené Brown bring together a dynamic group of Black writers, organizers, artists, academics, and cultural figures to discuss the topics the two have dedicated their lives to understanding and teaching: vulnerability and shame resilience. Contributions by Kiese Laymon, Imani Perry, Laverne Cox, Jason Reynolds, Austin Channing Brown, and more.

Our Work is Everywhere by Syan Rose
Over the past ten years, we have witnessed the rise of queer and trans communities that have defied and challenged those who have historically opposed them. Through bold, symbolic imagery and surrealist, overlapping landscapes, queer illustrator and curator Syan Rose shines a light on the faces and voices of these diverse, amorphous, messy, real, and imagined queer and trans communities. In their own words, queer and trans organizers, artists, healers, comrades, and leaders speak honestly and authentically about their own experiences with power, love, pain, and magic to create a textured and nuanced portrait of queer and trans realities in America.

CSEE Professor Alan Sherman and his colleagues received the Best Paper award in the Computing Education Research Track  at the 2023 ACM SIGCSE Technical Symposium. The symposium is the main ACM conference for computer science educators and has been held annually since 1970.

The paper, Psychometric Evaluation of the Cybersecurity Curriculum Assessment, was based on joint research with collaborators at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Minnesota, Duluth.  It describes the Cybersecurity Curriculum Assessment (CCA) tool used to evaluate students' cybersecurity knowledge after they have completed a multi-course curriculum.

Psychometric Evaluation of the Cybersecurity Curriculum Assessment, Geoffrey L. Herman, Shan Huang, Peter A. Peterson, Linda Oliva, Enis Golaszewski, Alan T. Sherman, in Proceedings of the 54th ACM Technical Symposium on Computer Science Education, 2023.

The paper provides a detailed evaluation of how 193 students answered 25 questions based on different scenarios and identified which questions were better at recognizing the students who understood the underlying concepts best and could apply them to real-world situations.

The research builds on early work on a Cybersecurity Concept Inventory, which was used to assess students' conceptual knowledge of cybersecurity following a first course in the subject.

Interested in learning to write computer-checked math proofs?
Interested in learning an exciting new programming language?

Lean 4 is a new programming language that can be used to write code that's literally bug-free. It enables this because at its core, it is a proof assistant that verifies math proofs. A global community of mathematicians and computer scientists are building a database of formally verified math proofs across the undergraduate curriculum, as well as proofs at the frontiers of modern math. 

This summer, an informal group of mathematicians, computer scientists, physical scientists, and engineers at UMBC will be learning Lean 4. Come join us -- all are welcome! 

We will meet weekly this summer from 1-3 pm EST on Wednesdays, June 28 to August 23 in ILSB 233, as well as online for those not able to attend in person.

What is the focus of your Research?

Investigating the effects and properties of Aerosols, such as brown carbons, present in cloud water.


What are you looking forward to the most about your Research?

I look forward to working together with my fellow research assistants towards a real world, practical goal and continuing to do so throughout the next year.

What was the best part of your Research OR What was the biggest learning moment of your Research ?

So far, one of the best parts of my research experience has been applying the practical skills I have learned in my classes, such as MATLAB, to an actual long-term project. It really helps to take broad concepts and see them in a real world setting.

What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?

If you are interested in research or internships, then be proactive! Even if nothing comes from it, you can only benefit from creating relationships with your professors and networking with potential companies.

Good afternoon CWIT family,


We are currently recruiting through the summer for mentors for the 2023-2024 school year! Mentors can be students who have already participated in the program as mentors, previous mentees who are ready for a leadership role, or other members of CWIT. The responsibilities & expectations of being a mentor are here:


Responsibilities and Expectations

- Commit to being a peer mentor for one full academic year.

- Serve as a mentor to new students by demonstrating a personal interest in their adjustment to UMBC and CWIT while recognizing and accepting the new student's individuality.

- Assist mentees in setting and meeting personal and academic goals.

- Become familiar with your mentees' personal and academic interests as well as future educational and career goals.

- Maintain a friendly, but professional demeanor and relationship with mentees.

- Serve as a leader and a role model for all students by complying with UMBC's conduct and community standards

- Maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA


The compensation for being a CWIT Peer Mentor is different this year from what previous mentors may know; this school year we are offering $150 Retriever Dollars!

Concerning Job Scams Holidays and long weekends attempt to catch users off guard

Over the weekend the Division of Information Technology has gotten reports of several job scams sent to users by email. These scams promise good pay for minimal effort, usually at home on your own schedule. The scams will ask for your information, including:

  • name and full address

  • cell phone number and personal email address

  • in some cases your resume

  • banking or credit card information

  • passport information and/or social security number (SSN)

This information can be used to impersonate you by opening credit in your name, or simply to drain the finances from your current accounts. Users have also reported fake invoices from well known companies, as well as check or money order scams; both meant to trick people to send money directly to the scammers.

If you have received any suspicious emails asking for your personal information, even from someone appearing to be affiliated with UMBC, do not respond. Send the message to security@umbc.edu. We will help to verify the legitimacy of these messages.

When did you do your Internship?

I started in June 2022 as a high school student at Broadneck High School and I am continuing the research as I begin my undergraduate studies at UMBC.


Where does your Research take place?

Marten Lab, Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering, UMBC

What is the focus of your Research?

I primarily focused on screening the entire kinase knockout library to find out more about their respective kinases' involvement with the cell wall biosynthesis and repair.


What are you looking forward to the most about your Research?

I am looking forward to the 3-D printing aspect of my internship, meeting a lot of new people, and living in a new area of the country.

What was the best part of your Research OR What was the biggest learning moment of your Research ?

My favorite part of my research experience directly led to my biggest learning moment throughout my research experience. I most enjoyed organizing, processing, and interpreting my data before sharing it with others. While preparing my data, I had to consider what was important to stress to others in order to create an engaging presentation. By identifying those key features in trying to articulate ideas, new ideas and conclusions were made clear to me. I find that stage so satisfying and formative because I was able to find new meaning in the research I did that guided my future efforts.

What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?

It is crucial for everyone with a future in science to challenge their own thinking; either with in-depth, difficult content, or with unfamiliar content. I implore others to step into areas with the intention to do that.

Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?

I am not yet involved in any clubs or organizations on campus.

What are your goals after graduation?

I would like to attain a PhD in biochemical engineering

I am looking forward to the 3-D printing aspect of my internship, meeting a lot of new people, and living in a new area of the country.

What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?

Fill out all of the internship opportunities sent through the advising groups and go to the career fairs.

What are your goals after graduation?

Pursue chemical engineering within the defense or aerospace industries
