Intern of the Week: Michael Washington

<Tagline>Check out Michael's Social Media Internship</Tagline>

Name: Michael Washington

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: UMBC Career Center

Position Title: Social Media Intern

Major or Program: Media & Communications

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: 2022-2023 Academic year

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

I’ve been the social media intern for the career center. It’s been a nice opportunity to help my fellow students find their interests in their career opportunities. My job has been to manage the center’s social media platforms, so through posts, messages, stories, and other digital marketing techniques I help spread the word about job opportunities and resources being offered.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I regularly met with my career advisor in my Junior year, sharing my experiences as a photographer and video producer. Over the summer, she told me that there was opening for the social media position, so I emailed the contact responsible for hiring. I sent my resume and received a recommendation from my advisor and soon after I received an interview.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

My past Career Advisor gave me a lot of support and helped me find this position.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

The internship has given me the opportunity to create new marketing strategies, while also seeing the effectiveness of my work. Since joining the team, I’ve helped attract hundreds of new followers, help the center achieve its highest levels of engagement, and had a lot of fun while doing it.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Yes. While my work has help produce great increases in engagement, my favorite thing is that more students are becoming aware of the potential and opportunities. Creating original content that inspires students to take an interest in their careers and make solid connections is what I’m most proud of.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Just apply. Sometimes you won’t get the job you were looking for on the first try. Just keep applying.

Have fun and take lots of risks.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

The career center has great career peers and advisors who can make the career search process more manageable. My advisor Kacie Lawrence was my advisor when I worked at OCA Mocha as the video intern. That has been my favorite position so far, and through that experience she helped me find this one.

URCAD Sneak Peek: Polina Kassir

Polina Kassir
Mentor: Rachel Brewster, Biological Sciences

Oxygen’s critical role in ATP synthesis makes ischemia (lack of oxygen delivery) a potentially fatal injury. Zebrafish embryos, however, can survive nearly fifty hours in a zero-oxygen (anoxic) environment by entering a state of metabolic suppression characterized by metabolic arrest of ATP-demanding processes, such as ion pumping driven by the Na+-K+-ATPase (NKA). The Brewster Lab has previously shown that the N-myc Downstream Regulated Gene 1 (NDRG1) mediates NKA downregulation in the embryonic kidney and ionocytes; I demonstrated that this response is reversible and hence adaptive. Here, I explore the question of whether Ndrg1a promotes the return of membrane NKA levels upon re-oxygenation, using the proximity ligation assay (PLA) to detect whether these proteins interact in situ. My preliminary data reveal that the PLA signal intensifies in the anterior kidney and ionocytes with increasing time post re-oxygenation, which is consistent with a potential role for Ndrg1a as a versatile adapter protein and environmental oxygen sensor. Identification of the subcellular compartments where these proteins interact will further our understanding of the role of Ndrg1a in hypoxia adaptation. Overall, this research may lead to novel therapeutic approaches for the mitigation of hypoxic and reoxygenation injuries.

Joint work with Tirth Patel, Dr. Charles Nicholas, and Dr. Edward Raff

We introduce AVScan2Vec, a sequence-to-sequence autoencoder that can ingest AV scan data, extract semantic meaning, and produce meaningful feature vectors for malware. AVScan2Vec is able to bypass several limitations of prior malware feature-extraction methods, while simultaneously showing noteworthy improvement in several relevant ML tasks. Our implementation of AVScan2Vec in combination with Dynamic Continuous Indexing is especially potent, enabling 10 nearest-neighbor lookup queries in ~16ms on a dataset containing over seven million malware samples. Automation has become increasingly more vital to the field of malware analysis due to manual effort being slow and costly. To improve common tasks such as classification, clustering, and nearest-neighbor lookup of malware, improving malware feature extraction has been a significant research focus. Many approaches rely on features that can only be obtained using prolonged analysis. Due to the enormous quantity and variety of malware, however, applying these feature extraction techniques to a production-size malware corpus would be infeasible. Other, more scalable feature-extraction methods are hindered by static obfuscation, restricted to a single file format, and/or limited in their capacity to identify higher-level malware features. Our work explores the under-recognized potential of antivirus (AV) scan data, which is relatively cheap to acquire and contains rich features.

After the introduction was the survivor speak-out. The speak-out is the heart and soul of Take Back the Night. Survivors are encouraged to come up and share their story with the crowd before the march throughout campus. As a survivor, sharing your story at TBTN allows you to acknowledge your experience with others who believe and support you.

We then moved on to the march portion of the night, where we got loud and chanted in support of victims of sexual violence. We Believe You, an activist group dedicated to ending sexual violence, led the march, the survivor circle of care, and a private discussion in the Women’s Center following the march.

The survivor circle is a new addition to Take Back the Night. At the peak of the march, everyone formed a circle around True Grit. Survivors were invited to the middle of the circle, while supporters chanted the refrain, “We see you. We believe you. You matter.” After the survival circle, the march back to Main Street commenced.

After the march, community members got back together for some craftivism! This part of the night is intended to provide space for reflection, creative expression, and community-building between survivors and supporters alike.
