Dr. Welty leads Baltimore-centered consortium, $2.3M grant

American cities face environmental challenges that are exacerbated by climate change, from air and water quality issues to flooding and heat. Low-income neighborhoods and areas that were previously subject to racial redlining often experience these effects more intensely.
A new program supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) has funded Urban Integrated Field Laboratories in three American cities (including Baltimore) to generate resilience-enhancing solutions to urban climate challenges in collaboration with community organizations. The Baltimore-centered consortium, named the Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative (BSEC), will receive $24.5 million through the program. UMBC will receive $2.3 million of this larger grant.
Leading UMBC’s work on the project is
Claire Welty, professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering (
CBEE) and director of the Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education (
CUERE). Johns Hopkins University leads the overall project, which also includes collaborators at the Pennsylvania State University, Morgan State University, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Drexel University, and the University of Virginia.
“This Baltimore Social-Environmental Collaborative is an important program during a critical time for our region, for our state, and for our planet,” says Karl V. Steiner, vice president for research at UMBC. “I am pleased that Baltimore was selected to serve as a representative metropolitan area for the climate challenges faced by many mid-sized industrial cities across the U.S.”

With the deluge of data in the modern world, machine learning has become a mainstay of industry and science. Machine learning algorithms aim to find underlying relationships hidden in a task that agree with prior knowledge and best generalize to unseen data making as few assumptions about the nature of the data as possible. In cases where several tasks are expected to share underlying structure, multitask learning aims to identify and exploit this shared structure to benefit all tasks. In functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), for example, datasets collected from a group of subjects can be separated into statistically independent sources by joint processing to yield improved performance over what can be achieved considering each dataset alone. In other applications, such as recommender systems, tasks and the corresponding datasets may arrive sequentially over time. This introduces further challenges associated with online processing and modeling of the joint structure in an efficient manner -- key issues toward lifelong learning. Furthermore, where linear models are insufficient to adequately describe underlying task relations, it is desirable to capitalize on rich nonlinear function spaces to develop machine learning algorithms.
In this work, multitask learning is developed and applied to various machine learning problems. In unsupervised statistical learning, an independent vector analysis algorithm is developed based on a flexible, yet simple, family of distributions termed the complex-valued multivariate generalized Gaussian distribution. In lifelong supervised and reinforcement learning, kernel dictionary learning is used to capture the joint structure of streaming tasks in rich reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. A sparsification technique is utilized to mitigate the effects of growing computational and storage complexity typical of kernel methods without sacrificing convergence guarantees. This approach is further generalized to tasks where the data emanate from different sources, or views, yielding a kernel lifelong multitask multiview learning algorithm. To affirm the effectiveness of the algorithms developed, experiments based on synthetic as well as real-world datasets are performed. The convergence of the developed supervised lifelong learning algorithms is also rigorously established.

Where was your internship?
Genentech at Hillsboro Individualized Therapies in Hillsboro, Oregon
What is the focus of your research/internship?
Technology transfer of purification processes for cell and gene therapies. Revati performed technical evaluations of various chromatography and filtration methods through experiment planning, data collection & analysis.
Revati was one of the winners for the Intern Project Showcase at Genentech + Roche.
A total of 10 winners were selected amongst 300 interns in four different categories (research, operations, commercial, business, etc.) through a voting process across all locations in the US. She received first prize in the 'Operations and Quality' category, and was rewarded with a cash prize.
All participants were required to make a poster and a presentation, along with a short video for explaining the experiments and our overall experience during the 3-day event.
What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?
While it's very tough to crack an internship or a job, I do recommend not settling on the work profile that you receive. When you find what you love to do, most of the professional growth follows evidently.
Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?
Vice President of CBEE GSO.
What are your goals after graduation?
Work as a purification development scientist (downstream processing) in industry.
