Intern of the Week: Maddie Greul

<Tagline>Check out Maddie's internship with Northrop Grumman</Tagline>

Name: Maddie Gruel

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Northrop Grumman (Internship)

Position Title: Manufacturing Engineer Intern

Major or Program: Mechanical Engineering

Current Class Level: Senior

Work Term: Summer 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

"My internship at Northrop Grumman was/is (I’m still interning here part time) an unforgettable experience. To be able to work for a company that does such substantial work for the military is quite an honor. It’s amazing going to work every day and knowing your making a true impact on warfighters' lives!

One task that was consistently day to day was a few meetings which helped give me an insight as to how a production team works together through all the different roles.

However, my day to day at Northrop was always a little different each day which is something I loved. The specific goal of the projects I would tackle would be to increase production through the process of researching issues and coming up with the best solution to resolve them."

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard of the position in late January and applied in early February. The interview process was throughout the months of February and March and by April I had received an offer!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

The people I work with! Everyone is so kind and really wants to see you succeed and reach your goals!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I have made an impact through my work by always coming to work ready to give a 100% effort every day. Knowing I came to work every day with this mindset and seeing myself come up with solutions that helped increase production and gained me recognition made me feel my work was truly impactful and helping warfighters!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Get out of your comfort zone, this is the time to take risks and try something new!

UMBC is proud to announce the projects selected to receive grants in the 2021-2022 rounds of the Hrabowski Fund for Innovation competition.

IMPLEMENTATION & RESEARCH AWARD (Spring 2022)

Feasibility of Anonymous Grading for Reducing Performance Discrepancies across Student Demographics (Implementation and Research Grant) — A multidisciplinary team led by Dr. Neha Raikar (Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering) will build an anonymous grading tool for in-class paper exams and quizzes. This tool will allow the team to test its hypotheses that anonymous grading can lead to reduction, if not elimination, of implicit bias during grading and improve the fairness perception amongst students, especially underrepresented minority students. The grading methods used for exams and quizzes are central to determining student rank, letter grade, and GPA. Unfortunately, grading by a teaching assistant or an instructor may suffer from implicit bias while grading, which can have a detrimental effect on student morale and performance. The team plans to collect data on anonymous grading in six Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering and Computer Science and Electrical Engineering classes, collect feedback from students, and perform statistical analysis on that data and historical data.

The Hrabowski Fund for Innovation exemplifies UMBC's commitment to investing in faculty initiatives that fuel creativity and enterprise and also create opportunities for student engagement.

Proposals for the next round of Hrabowski Fund for Innovation grants are due by October 28, 2022. For more information and to apply, visit UMBC's Faculty Development Center website.
