The first 3 BXB Fests have been fabulous! We’re excited for the upcoming
Baltimore by Baltimore festival on Saturday, September 3rd from 12pm-8pm (link) This month’s BxB will have a
special focus on supporting our young creatives in Baltimore. The Five Pillars of Hip Hop theme will feature amazing local talent, makers, and entrepreneurs brought to us by Media Rhythm Institute. This will be the 4th event in our 6 month festival series and it is exactly the kind of creative, inclusive, locally-sourced celebration of homegrown Baltimore talent and culture that we hoped for in

What are you doing this Labor Day Weekend? First and foremost, mark your calendars, spread the word and plan to Come to the Baltimore Inner Harbor on Saturday Sept 3rd between 12-8pm to enjoy, connect, and celebrate at BxB.
But that’s not all…We need Volunteers to help us out during the event too! We’re happy to be partnering with Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore (the Festival organizers) and hope you’ll consider jumping in and joining us to make the festival a big success! Please check out the info below and follow up asap. Drop me a line if you have questions...
What: Volunteer at Baltimore by Baltimore (volunteers will help us with survey outreach, and with other Waterfront Partnership event coordination needs)
When: Saturday Sept 3rd. (Choose a two hour time frame 12-2pm / 2-4pm / 4-6pm / or 6-8pm for your volunteer shift; and you’ll also be able to walk around and enjoy the festival too).
Benefits: Volunteers will get a free Baltimore by Baltimore tee shirt and other WFP swag…AND you’ll have the satisfaction of enjoying and supporting Baltimore by Baltimore as we Reimagine the Harbor together!
Parking note: We want to make it easy...Volunteers can park at 204 E Lombard street, at the Arrow Garage, on the right side of Lombard. When you exit the garage you will show them the ticket we provide you. No need to grab it before you park, you will only show this when you are leaving.
I’ll be there enjoying the day and proudly sporting a BXB festival shirt too…Hope to see you Saturday at Baltimore By Baltimore!

NSA Codebreaker Challenge Technical Talk

NSA will hold a 2022 Codebreaker Challenge Technical Talk online at 6:00pm ET on Thursday, September 1. You'll meet the team and get an overview of the challenge this year. Join the talk using this MS Teams link.
The annual NSA
Codebreaker Challenge consists of a series of tasks for students that are worth a varying amount of points based on their difficulty. Schools are ranked according to the total number of points accumulated by their students. Solutions may be submitted at any time during the challenge, which ends early in January, 2023.
Each task in this year's challenge will require a range of skills. It starts with easy tasks but advances to harder ones, so it's a great learning experience even if you are know little about cybersecurity. To solve all of the tasks, you will need to call upon your technical expertise, your intuition, and your common sense.
Getting started is easy. Go to the challenge
webpage, create an account and identify yourself as a student, instructor, or alumnus of UMBC. After you've verified your email address, you will get an invitation to join the
Codebreaker Discord server. Joining will earn you (and UMBC) your first point!
As you work on the problems, you can
track how UMBC is doing on the leaderboard. Of the more than 340 schools currently registered, UMBC is #2 in terms of the number of its participants, but only #45 in based on its score.

Women's Center Fall '22 Hours, Services + Resources
Welcome back, we hope to see you soon!
Women's Center Fall 2022 Hours of Operation:
Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will start welcoming community members into our physical space!
In order to protect our collective health, we encourage social distancing while in the lounge space, and may enforce capacity limits for larger events. In addition, we ask that community members continue to wear masks in our spaces.
Our Fall Hours are:
Mondays through Thursdays: 11am - 5pm
Fridays: 11am - 4pm
While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714.
Individualized Support Meetings:
Women's Center professional staff are available for individual meetings and support which we can provide in-person or via phone or video chat. Drop by or to schedule an appointment, email womenscenter@umbc.edu or call 410-455-2714.

Undergraduate Summer Internship : Ecolab, Nalco Water
Mary Nolan, '23 chemical engineering
Mary Nolan, '23 chemical engineering
Internship experience
This summer, Mary interned full-time at Ecolab and worked as an Engineering Technical Sales intern for their water treatment company, Nalco Water. Mary learned about boilers, cooling towers, and wastewater systems, and about the chemicals and techniques used to treat them. Mary worked in their Food and Beverage Manufacturing division and had the opportunity to visit plants all over Central Pennsylvania testing and treating water. Also, Mary created projects to save water, that once implemented, will save over 5 million gallons a year for just one site!
What advice would you give to students interested in internships?
"Take every opportunity to learn more about companies and internship programs. I found this internship through a recruiting event at a SWE conference and learning more about the company and getting to know the people working there allowed me to have this awesome experience"
What are your plans after graduation?
"To continue to work in the industry to save water and improve the environment"

Student Virtual Parking Permits Now Available
Hey Commuter Students, Important Information!
Student Virtual Parking Permits Now Available!
Dear Students,
UMBC virtual parking permits are now available for all new and returning students. All students are required to activate a new virtual on-campus parking permit each August. Please do not sign up for a visitor account; UMBC does not issue parking permits for visitors.
- New Students: Please go to the UMBC Parking Services Portal, register your vehicle(s), and activate your virtual permit.
- Returning Students: Please go to the UMBC Parking Services Portal to review your account for any outstanding fines, verify/update your vehicle information, and activate your new virtual permit.
Parking enforcement will begin on August 31; those who park on campus without a valid permit will be issued a citation.
Registering your vehicle is not the same as getting a permit. Once vehicles are registered, please click on the "Get Permit" button. Parking permits must be renewed every August prior to the start of the new academic year. You may register up to three vehicles. However, you may only have one vehicle on campus at a time. Once you have registered your vehicle, please click on the "Get Permit" button. Failure to complete this step means no permit has been issued to you and as a result, you may be issued a citation.
Parking Permit Overview
Student parking permits are assigned as follows:
- Zone A (red): Commuter students
- Zone B (green): Walker Avenue apartment residents
- Zone C (gold): Residential students (second year and higher)
- Zone F (orange): First-year residential students are eligible for an "F" permit and are required to park in the Satellite Lot on South Rolling Road during the hours of 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday - Friday. UMBC Transit will provide shuttle service to and from the Satellite Lot.
