Abstract:

The production of synthetic zeolites for use as catalysts and adsorbents is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Zeolites are materials having molecule-scale pores that enable catalytic applications in petroleum refining, automotive emissions treatment, and biomass processing. Zeolites frequently catalyze chemical reactions in water, as is the case when producing renewable fuels and chemicals from biomass. The interactions of water molecules with the zeolite catalysts are incredibly complex, but it is important to understand how these systems behave so that zeolites can be optimized for application-based performance. Unfortunately, existing computational modeling tools struggle to both accurately and efficiently predict how complex chemical mixtures interact with zeolite catalytic active sites. This project will develop simulation techniques that will enable orders-of-magnitude improvements over current approaches, thereby generating fundamental knowledge of how water interacts with zeolite catalyst active sites. Symbolic regression, a machine learning tool for identifying equations that represent a given dataset, will also be explored for describing fundamental interactions between acids and bases. Community-based learning and outreach activities are planned to engage high school students in symbolic regression for math, science, and machine learning.

This project will advance Monte Carlo simulation methods to enable efficient sampling of water adsorption in acidic zeolites. Specific aims include 1) introducing Monte Carlo moves for directly sampling protonation states of water clusters in zeolites, 2) demonstrating simulations of competitive adsorption of water and alkanes using literature force fields, and 3) generating interatomic potentials for acid-base interactions by using symbolic regression to learn equations from quantum chemistry calculations. The anticipated outcomes will lay the groundwork for simulations of competitive chemisorption in porous materials with active sites, as well as discover new equations for simply characterizing potential energy surfaces of acid-base interactions.

Major or Program: Master of Professional Studies in Data Science

    Current Class Level: Master's Student

    Work Term: Summer 2021 - Fall 2021

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

Day to day tasks include data wrangling, data enrichment using a plethora of other platforms, data analysis, ML modeling and data visualization. I also work with the Sales and Marketing team to create data science related content for the platform to increase visibility and platform engagement.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I was studying DATA 604 under Prof. Charles Givre. He informed us of internship openings in his company i.e., DataDistillr. I applied for the position as soon as I heard of the opportunity. He conducted an interview and then I was hired.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Everyone at my organization is super helpful and super smart. Everyday was a learning experience in itself while being fun all the while.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Although I have much to learn, I feel I am able to find unique and valuable insights from data to help clients and charities find potential donors for fundraisers, marathons, peer-to-peer campaigns, dinners, etc. I was able to help make the world a better place by reaching out to those who would willingly take action to help make it better.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Be willing to learn and do not shy away from experimenting. Keep a to-do list to keep track of your time and effort. Make sure to network within the organization by sending messages at intervals to keep in touch (Don't be nervous, no one bites. Just send messages to say hi, keep it simple). Ask for tasks to be done if you are not given any. Think of ways to contribute and start executing, don't wait.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

I loved how considerate everyone that I contacted from the Career Center was. I liked the training they gave during the internship, it helped me navigate my way around the organization and also helped me be more assertive. The Career Center's constant reminders of the task completion helped me keep on track with my progress and complete the assignments on time.

Being an international student, it was difficult for me to find an internship and for this reason, I am grateful that DataDistillr trusted in me. I have learned how to conduct data analysis and machine learning modeling while being able to conduct meetings with clients on a one-on-one basis. DataDistillr offered me a permanent position and I accepted the offer. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to growing in my career through DataDistillr.

COVID-19 Testing Instructions for Students

<Tagline>Plan ahead to complete your required entry test</Tagline>

    Dear Mechanical Engineering Students,

As you get ready for your first day of classes, please make a plan to complete your entry test. Remember, all community members are required to test the first day they return to campus, regardless of vaccination status.

Note: This information is primarily for commuter students. Residential students will test when they move into their rooms but should plan ahead by downloading and registering the app.

Instructions

1. We recommend that you take an at-home rapid test before you come to campus (within 24 hours).

2. Testing on-campus requires the use of a mobile app. Please review these instructions, download and register now, BEFORE you come to campus to test. If you need technical assistance, email mgscanner@umbc.edu.

3. Watch this video on how to take the test.

4. Plan to test as soon as you arrive on campus, before 11 a.m. if possible.

5. When you come to campus, plan to pick up a vial and swab at:

Temporary Location

The Retriever Activities Center (RAC)

January 31 - February 2

8:30 a.m. - 9 p.m. (technical assistance also available 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.)

Permanent Locations

The UMBC police station - Open 24/7

The Center for Well-Being - 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The University Center 3rd floor vestibule - 7 a.m. - 11 p.m.

For residential students only: your community desk.

5. If you are testing at one of self-serve sites, find an isolated or distanced place to complete your swab. This may be your car or somewhere outside. Return your completed test to the drop box at each location. Do NOT test at the pick up and drop off locations as you may expose others.

6. If you need help, visit the RAC between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday - Wednesday, for technical assistance.

Frequently asked questions:

Can I be on campus while I am waiting for my results?

Yes. Once you complete your test, you may remain on campus to complete your day wearing an appropriate mask and maintaining physical distance as much as possible. We are relying on masking and distancing protocols to reduce on campus transmission while we await your test results. Given the shortage of testing in Maryland, we felt this was the fairest way to require an entry test.

How long will it take to receive my results?

UMBC cannot check on the status of individual tests. In general, it can take up to three business days to receive your results. Testing results from on-campus tests will be posted to your COVID Compliance Card in your myUMBC profile.

Is testing on campus safe?

We do believe testing on campus is safe, as long as community members follow instructions, pick up their kits, and swab in a location that is distanced from others. For the first week of classes, we are making additional testing and technical assistance available in the RAC (Monday - Wednesday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.), in order to reduce any potential crowding at testing sites. In addition, it will be helpful to have most employees complete testing next week, before students return.

What if I recently tested positive? Should I test?

You are not required to test as you may continue to test positive for up to 90 days. You will need to report your result in order to be exempted from entry testing. Information on how to do this and when you can return to campus is available here.

Please email covid19@umbc.edu if you have any questions.
