Marshall Scholar Joshua Slaughter
Seeks to advance equity in personalized medicine
Joshua Slaughter ‘22, M30, has received the Marshall Scholarship, becoming the second student in UMBC history and the first in 29 years to be selected for the prestigious award. Slaughter is one 41 American students selected this year from institutions across the country for the Marshall Scholarship, which supports graduate study at institutions in the United Kingdom. He was also a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship.
Slaughter, who is earning his degree in computer engineering, will pursue his Ph.D. in informatics at the University of Edinburgh. His goal is to advance equity in the developing field of personalized medicine.

Women's Center Winter 2021-2022 Hours of Operation:
Through the winter, the Women's Center staff will be working remotely and in-person. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at
womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714. Staff will generally be most available between the hours of 10am - 4pm. We appreciate your patience in our response to your email or returning your phone call.
December 14th to December 17th: Reduced Hours
On Study Day (Tuesday, 12/14), 12/15, and 12/16, the Women's Center lounge will be open from 10 am to 5 pm. On 12/17, the Women's Center will be open from 10 am to 4 pm.
January 3rd to January 28th: Remote Services Only
During the January term, Women's Center staff will be working remotely and our lounge will be closed. Staff are still available to support the UMBC community - please reach out to a staff member directly or through our shared email or phone.
This is an update to our hours based on the recent guidance provided by University leadership.
Spring semester hours will resume 1/31.
The Women's Center lactation room continues to be available by reservation. For details, contact us at

Individualized Support Meetings:
Women's Center professional staff are available for individual meetings and support which we can provide via phone or video chat and in some cases in-person; to schedule an appointment, email
womenscenter@umbc.edu or call 410-455-2714. If you are already working with a specific staff member and need to set up additional meetings, feel free to reach out to the staff member you have been working with directly (via email or even g-chat!).

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.
Reality AI is an audio signal processing company that provides solutions to the clients using Artificial Intelligence and Tiny ML. Reality AI offers AI-driven technology to help you find the most cost-effective instrumentation, components, and placement - and to build, optimize and deploy ML models in your product’s firmware.
In my journey at the company, I have assisted in collecting and curating the sound data that can be used to train the models on. After the data is in good shape and ready to go in the pipeline, I have trained models to classify or to perform anomaly detection. Along with being in the technical team, I have been in the customer success team and interacted with clients to know their expectations, deliver the results, assisting them in the future plans and strategies they could follow to meet the goal and discuss future steps.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I applied to the position in mid-July through UMBCworks. I heard back from the company in mid-August, and the interview was scheduled.
What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?
Due to the type of work I do, I have to go to the office onsite. The most exciting thing is I get to meet the team members and my manager with whom I work closely. I enjoy a lot, to test the models in action and see how it actually performs. I enjoy this part of my work the most.
How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I have curated the data that is used by the automobile industry, health industry, personal and safety industry. The data I collect and segment goes in the ML conduit and helps in providing the best results. The solutions are used by various clients that in real life make use of it. This makes their life easier and smoother.
What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
My guidance to other aspiring students would be to build your network and communicate with more people. Work on your resume and seek help from the Career Center if needed. Look out for the positions available and modify your resume to the expectations of the position. Be prepared for an interview as the opportunity may come to your door anytime.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will be an overnight power outage by UMBC Facilities Management planned for The Center for Well-Being starting at 6pm, today December 7th. i3b's Gathering Space will close at 5:45pm. We will reopen at our regular Fall semester hours tomorrow, December 8th. We apologize for the inconvenience.
