I developed a dashboard for BGE's innovation team, introduced time savings, improved task efficiency, and most importantly, gained new insights into our program. I participated in engaging employee training events and worked hands-on with BGE/Exelon's innovation teams.

I received an email announcement from the UMBC Career Center that BGE was looking for a Spring 21 co-op, and they were specifically interested in undergraduates in my field. I was not planning to co-op during that semester, but I decided to apply anyway.

I enjoyed learning how to use Microsoft Power BI and being able to immediately apply those skills to a real-world project.

I built, and continue to update, a dashboard that my team uses throughout the day. This has improved our process, and even started conversations with BGE's sister utility companies about similar efforts.

Go for it! Be flexible with job descriptions and assignments, don't feel bad for not being an expert overnight, and remember you are there to learn.

Zareen and Ali are dear friends and colleagues of many of us and we know that they work tirelessly to advocate for the rights of people from their country of origin, Afghanistan. Both Zareen and Ali come from an ethnic minority group in Afghanistan, the Hazara, who have been brutally targeted by extremists; Zareen has written extensively on the issue for Ms. Magazine and other outlets.

At the present, Zareen and Ali are working to help bring 8 family members from Pakistan here to Baltimore. These family members have already survived harrowing ordeals to leave Afghanistan. They left Afghanistan with nothing. Zareen and Ali are the main financial supporters of them right now. While Zareen and Ali have been able to get pro-bono legal counsel for these family members, they want to file Humanitarian Parole forms to bring them here to the United states. The fee for each applicant is $575.00. Right now, They need help to cover the fees to file the Humanitarian Parole applications and for them to get visas. Eventually, each of the 8 family members will need a plane ticket to come to Baltimore and some support locally while they get settled and find work. All 8 of the family members are in danger because of their ethnic minority status and several were also being targeted because of aid work they engaged in while in Afghanistan.

The objective of the funded project is to demonstrate a flexible rechargeable Zn battery (RZB) prototype and formulate a comprehensive plan for its commercialization for wearable device applications. Commercially available rechargeable batteries contain toxic, costly, and flammable materials (e.g., Li-based compounds and liquid electrolytes). These materials impose strict packaging requirements (to ensure safety) that result in rigid and bulky batteries of fixed shapes and sizes (e.g., coin cell, cylindrical, and prismatic). The funded project builds on the RZB technology (pioneered in Dr. Madan's lab at UMBC) that exploits abundantly available, non-toxic, and non-flammable materials (Zn for anode, MnO2 for cathode, and chitosan as gel electrolyte) to demonstrate a safe, scalable, and flexible RZB. By demonstrating the unique advantages of safety and design flexibility, which enables larger battery footprint and hence better performance,  Dr. Madan expects to enable RZB commercialization for wearable device applications.

The purpose of the Multicultural Leadership Experience is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify with diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. 

This year's MLE Mini-Series theme is Deconstructing Grit and Greatness! Below you will find the event links to the three sessions we will be offering this semester. Students are welcome to sign-up for any or all available session(s). 

Due to COVID-19 physical distancing restrictions, we are at a limited capacity of 20 seats. Due to this, we highly encourage attendees to register in advance. Doors will open 10 minutes prior to start time, all registrants will have their spot saved until 5 minutes post-start time. In which we will then open available seats to all on a first come first serve basis.

This first session of the mini series will focus on the topic of Reconstructing Resilience, specifically on how it's dictionary definition (i.e. the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness) can create an environment that cultivates toxic positivity, specifically during hardship and/or trauma. Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach in relation to resiliency.

Exploring Empathy and Giving Grace - October 26th, 1pm - 2:15pm
The second session of the mini series will focus on the topic of Exploring Empathy and Giving Grace, specifically on exploring one's emotional intelligence in understanding others, as well as reflecting our own personal needs. Participants will connect their understanding of themselves to their leadership approach by engaging in inter-cultural dialogue and utilizing emotional intelligent capacities.

This third session of the mini series will focus on the topic of Decoding Inclusive Excellence, specifically on questioning what Inclusive Excellence means in the context of UMBC and beyond. Participants will connect their understanding of our campus community and tools learned in order to collectively co-create a new definition for Inclusive Excellence.

Each mini series session will provide participants with:

• connections to campus and resources
• meaning-making through reflection and group discussions
• leadership learning through the lens of multiculturalism, diversity and inclusion
• and opportunities to engage with other students across different areas of campus involvement

**Please note that this is NOT the MLE Cohort program that runs in the spring semester. 

This Friday(9/17) marks the first official meeting of the club! It will be taking place from 1-5pm in ENGR 005A (the GAIM lab). This meeting will introduce everyone to the club and how it will work this year, and kick off our Fall semester game jam.

The game jam itself it will start on Friday and continue until Sunday (9/19). During this time everyone will divide into teams and work to make a functioning prototype of their game. The Saturday and Sunday portions will be online as we will not have access to the GAIM lab on weekends. After the jam ends on Sunday, teams will have until the next Friday meeting to polish their games.

That Friday, everyone will present their prototypes and state if they wish to continue development on their game for the rest of the semester/year (only games with a working prototype will be considered as club games).
