CWIT's Danyelle Ireland is named 2021 national Rising Star

The National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students has named Dr. Danyelle Tauryce Ireland, associate director of CWIT and research assistant professor of Engineering & Computing Education, a 2021 Transfer Champion Rising Star. The award honors her years of mentoring and advocating for UMBC transfer students in information technology and engineering fields.

“My professional background has been in K-12 education and some of my first experiences supporting students in higher education have been with the Transfer Scholars in IT and Engineering (T-SITE) program at UMBC,” says Ireland. “I identify as an educational scholar-practitioner, so to be recognized for my impact in service of students, and to have a former T-SITE Scholar contribute to the nomination process, was especially validating.”

As UMBC faculty prepare for spring, they are reflecting on lessons learned from a primarily online fall 2020 semester. In UMBC’s College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT), this means honoring teaching fellows and teaching assistants for their role in making sure courses met student needs.

“I think anybody’s goal, in any sort of class, is to provide the highest quality, most optimal experience to our students,” said Dr. Jamie Gurganus, instructor in the mechanical engineering department and COEIT’s associate director of engineering education initiatives. Along with colleagues across the university, she worked through the summer and fall to help faculty provide students with “safe, thriving online environments” to learn.

Kellogg Foundation on January 17th, 2017 and has been celebrated every year since. The goal of the day is to promote racial healing and equity through collective action. As a Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Campus Center, we are honoring the day by welcoming you to join our letter writing campaign regarding the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Congressional Resolution, also known as S. Con. Res. 50.  Introduced by Senator Cory Booker, this concurrent resolution calls for the establishment of a United States Commission on Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT). 

Through our letter writing campaign, we encourage you to voice your thoughts on the TRHT resolution by writing letters to your senators. During the first hour of the event, you will have the chance to learn more about the resolution as well as the TRHT work that is happening on campus and in the surrounding community. The last 30 minutes will be an optional space for you to work through the thoughts and experiences that you would like to include in your letter with the facilitators.

The Women's Center's Returning Women Students Scholarships Application for 2021-22 is available now via ScholarshipRetriever to undergraduate students who meet the eligibility requirements. 


The deadline for submission via ScholarshipRetriever is Friday, April 9, 2020. 


This common application which is called Women's Center: Returning Women Students 2021-2022 in ScholarshipRetiever enables eligible students to apply for more than one of the Returning Women Students Scholarships with just one submission. Please note that this opportunity to apply will only appear in ScholarshipRetriever to students who meet the scholarship qualifications. The five available scholarships via the Returning Women Student Scholarship Application are:
  • Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship & The UMBC Scholarship for Mature Students 
  • Jodi Mister/Charlotte W. Newcombe Scholarship
  • AEGON Scholarship
  • The Richard & Roselyn Bryson Neville Memorial Fund for Returning Women Scholarship
  • The Rosalie Tydings Business and Professional Women’s Scholarship

Undergraduate students of any gender over the age of 25 and with at least 60 credits and 2.5 GPA may be eligible. Students must be completing their first undergraduate degree. 
If a student does not meet these requirements, the scholarship opportunity will not appear on ScholarshipRetriever. Students who have not completed the FAFSA will not see the opportunity in ScholarshipRetriever. Students who wish to still be considered despite not meeting these requirements should contact the Women's Center directly. This encouragement to reach out directly to the Women's Center extends to students who have extenuating circumstances (i.e. students who are DACA/undocumented) that may prevent them from completing the FAFSA.

Students who are selected to be scholars are required to participate in the Returning Women Students Scholars + Affiliates program. For more information about the program, visit our website and be sure to attend an information session.

Applicants are highly encouraged to attend an info session before submitting their application. For students who cannot attend a session live, a recording of the 2/22 session will be made available to those who request it.
