UMBC’s Jack Suess to receive 2020 EDUCAUSE Leadership Award

---

UMBC Vice President for Information Technology Jack Suess will soon receive one of the highest national recognitions offered to professionals in his field: the EDUCAUSE Leadership Award. 

EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association that focuses on information technology (IT) in higher education and includes more than 2,300 member colleges, universities, and groups. Suess ‘81, mathematics, M.S. ‘94, information systems, will receive the award during the EDUCAUSE Annual Conference, which will be held virtually this month. 

“This is a tremendous honor for me. Given that my entire career has been at UMBC, it also is testament to the innovative and collaborative culture of the UMBC community,” Suess says. “In particular, I want to highlight the technology leadership of my Division of Information Technology colleagues. Through all of their efforts, UMBC is looked at as a model for the use of technology in higher education.”

This course will utilize films, television programs and theoretical, historical, and analytic readings to focus on the ways in which LGBTQ people and queer issues have been represented historically in film and television, and how issues of homosexuality intersect with issues of race and gender. Using material from before and after the modern LGBTQ rights movement, we will explore such themes and stereotypes as sissies, mannish lesbians, cross dressing/drag, AIDS, transgender, bisexuality, and others.  Recommended Preparation GWST 100, GWST 200, or permission of instructor.

Title of your research project: Characterizing the effects of ferritin on ovarian cell migration in Drosophila melanogaster. 

Describe your project:

My research focuses on the roles of  Ferritin  in cell migration of migratory cells known as border cells in drosophila melanogaster. Ferritin helps to store iron in a non-toxic form in cells and my project focuses on investigating how the ferritin protein complex affects cell migration as well as exploring what transcription factor binding sites are present within the ferritin genes locus to understand how it may be regulated in fruit flies. 

Who is your mentor(s) for your project?

My mentor is Dr. Michelle Starz-Gaiano from the Biological sciences department. I found my mentor while I was taking her class (cell biology) and I chose to work with her because I was fascinated and interested in cell and developmental biology processes and I believed I would be able to learn a lot by working in her lab which I am.  

How did you become interested in this project?

I became interested in this project because I was curious about cell migration and underlying biological processes that regulate it, and the role of ferritin was unique and fascinating to me and to  learn about in cell migration. 

What has been the hardest part of your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher? 

The most unexpected thing about being a researcher would be being able to think  and work independently. The hardest part of my research would be being able to interpret and expand on results that were not expected and also to be able to improve the way I come up with questions to explore. 

What has been the most rewarding part?

The most rewarding part is when everything comes together nicely and I understand how it relates to the bigger picture. There is a sense of accomplishment that  motivates me to take on more tasks with my project. 

How will you disseminate your research?

I will be presenting at URCAD in April. I will also be presenting at the USM conference as well as ABRCMS this year. 

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research? 

Be open, passionate, and actively involved in your project. Also if you have difficulties finding a mentor, keep trying, and stay open to opportunities. 

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to become a biomedical scientist. 

This class examines the politics of human rights and cultural representations of gender violence in contemporary Latin American history. Focusing on specific moments of state-sponsored violence in Latin America, the class will explore broader issues relating to Western and Third World discourses on human rights, feminism and gender relations. Students taking this course will gain an understanding of the histories of the region, the relationship between universal human rights, nationalism, political violence and contemporary gender issues. Recommended Preparation GWST 100  or GLBL 100

This course introduces students to Arab and Muslim experiences in the U.S. via the study of literature, film, and art created by Arab and Muslim Americans. The course takes a historical approach and looks at texts that concern major historical events in Arab and Muslim American history. It will discuss how Arab and Muslim artists and writers are responding to and refusing racism and Orientalism while challenging gendered, sexual, and cultural norms within their communities. Recommended Preparation GWST 100 or AMST 200 or GLBL 100
