Women's Center Fall 2020 Hours of Operation:
The Women's Center continues to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday throughout the fall semester. We encourage campus community members to contact us through email at womenscenter@umbc.edu or via phone at 410-455-2714. Staff will generally be most available between the hours of 10am-4pm. We appreciate your patience in our response to your email or returning your phone call.

The Women's Center lounge space will remain closed until further notice. Just think, our new couches are going to feel even more comfy once we get to use them together again! 

The Women's Center lactation room is available by reservation only. For details on how to make a reservation please visit this post about Fall 2020 reservations. 

Individualized Support Meetings:
Women's Center professional staff are available for individual meetings and support which we can provide via phone or video chat; to schedule an appointment, email womenscenter@umbc.edu or call 410-455-2714. If you are already working with a specific staff member and need to set up additional meetings, feel free to reach out to the staff member you have been working with directly (via email or even g-chat!).

Women's Center Fall 2020 Program/Events:
The Women's Center is offering a range of programming and events virtually throughout the fall semester. All of our discussion-based groups (Between Women, Spectrum, We Believe You, and Women of Color Collective) will be meeting virtually. The Brave Space Forum series and programming for Returning Women Students/Adult Learners will be offered on a monthly basis.

For a full list of programming and events, we encourage community members to join our myUMBC page and check out the events page. Access links to our programs or events will either be available through the myUMBC event post or via email to members signed-up for our discussion-based programs list-servs. If you'd like to be added to a specific discussion-based group list-serv, email us at womenscenter@umbc.edu.

UMBC Together:
Throughout this time, community building, care, and support remain central to our mission even though the way we deliver those services look different right now. We know that, even though most of us are not learning or working on campus, our students, faculty, and staff will continue needing support and community -- and the Women's Center hopes to continue doing what we do best to strengthen this campus!

Hi everyone and welcome to a new school year!


Whether you are a new student or a returning member, we are excited to work with you! Online classes and clubs can be difficult but we are doing our best to make sure our organization is ready to go. Any student can join regardless of major or experience- our project is interdisciplinary and you’ll learn by doing (with help & guidance of course).


To start, we have some important information and updates:


  • We are moving our communication platform to Discord. Previously we have used Google Hangouts for our weekly meetings and Groupme for our updates- now both will be on Discord for ease of use. From our poll last semester, Discord was a preferred platform and it has many useful functions that will be an improvement. The Discord also has channels for casual conversation so that students can meet and talk to each other easily, since we are not able to in person.The link to join is here: https://discord.gg/cg4sKGC

  • For our water supply system project, we will be focusing on the design phase this semester. We are finalizing which chlorinator & metering system to implement and will be working on the technical design report. We also are establishing an partnership with a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Costa Rica, so if you are interested in international communication and/or speak Spanish we will be doing work in this area as well.

This school year looks different for many people so parents are exploring creative ways to provide the support they need for their families. The Career Center can attest to this as we are experiencing an increase in requests for home based positions such as tutors and nannies. To apply to these positions, search "Misc. Household Opportunities" in UMBCworks.

We feel that these may be great opportunities for students, however  we want to be sure that you find the one that is the right fit for you. Please be aware that because these positions are home based, and not an established employer, UMBC’s Career Center is limited in their ability to thoroughly research the individuals posting these opportunities.  Below are several things that you should do when considering application to one of these positions:

  • Do not be afraid to ask a lot of questions and be sure that you understand all that will be  expected of you if you are selected to fill the position.

  • Learn about the children, such as what they like to do for fun and how the parents would like you to handle challenging situations that may arise. Make sure the parents' answers to your questions feel like a good fit for your personality and your tutoring or nanny style.

  • Be sure you feel 100% comfortable with working in a home environment and the people that you will be working for.  UMBC is unable to do this part for you so it is important to make sure that everything feels right. If at any time it does not, simply decline the offer. 

  • If at any time something feels off or fishy, please report it to the Career Center immediately.

Welcome to the fall 2020 semester at UMBC! We’re excited to welcome you back even though these extraordinary times create unique challenges for many of us. We want to provide you with information about how to protect yourself, support the health and safety of our campus community, and reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 at UMBC and beyond. We also write to share UMBC’s community expectations during the transition back to campus.

All students who will be attending face-to-face classes and/or living or working on campus this fall are required to complete the Return to Campus COVID Awareness training by August 27, 2020. To access the training, please use the following instructions:

If you are having any issues accessing the training, please follow the instructions located at this FAQ page to self-enroll in the Return to Campus COVID Awareness.

At the end of module 5, you will be asked to acknowledge and sign the Retriever Community Agreement making a personal commitment to precautions and actions required in order to minimize the potential spread of COVID-19 on our campus and beyond.

If you do not complete the training and sign the Retriever Community Agreement by August 27 you will be required to take classes online and/or live off campus until circumstances allow for a return to campus.

Additional information on all of the requirements for students approved to return to campus, including information on COVID-19 testing options and daily symptom tracking, is available on the Retrievers Return Roadmap site.

We will not be issuing permits this fall. We will announce policies regarding permits for the Spring later in the Fall Semester.
 
2. If we don't have a permit, can we park anywhere?
Faculty/Staff/Students will be permitted to park in any legal space on campus. We will only be enforcing posted signs and safety violations. Visitor spaces will count as legal spaces.
 
3. Can Freshmen Residents park on campus?
Due to the limited number of vehicles on campus, Freshmen may park on the main campus. A determination about the Spring Semester will be made later this year.
 
4. Do you have to pay to park in visitor parking lots? 
We will not be enforcing pay to park lots this fall. As a result, visitor spaces will simply be legal spaces open to anyone. Please note, visitor's must be approved to be on campus this fall.
 
5. If we don't have permits, do we still need to register our vehicle's?
Yes, registering your vehicles is essential. Not only will it prepare you for a return to permits but it will also provide us with your contact information in case of an emergency. Additionally, due to Covid-19 protocols, we need to monitor who is on campus at all times for your safety.
 
6. Where are your electric charging stations and how long can we park at one?
We have 10 charging stations in the Walker Avenue Garage, 7 in Lot 9 and 2 in the Stadium Lot. We do ask that you limit yourself to 4 hours at a station.
 
7. I bought daily permits. Will they expire before I can use them?
No, your daily permits are good through 2025.

Varsha Pudi is a Sondheim Scholar and a member of the Honors College, majoring in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and Psychology ('23).

Title of research: Human Brain Biomarkers

Mentor: Dr.Marisel Villafañe Delgado, JHU

Description of the research project: I have been working as a research intern with the CIRCUIT Program at The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory on the Human Brain Biomarkers project. We have been using graph theory and other advanced analytic tools to assess macro-scale brain connections in human connectomes. One of the key ambitions of neuroimaging-based pain biomarker research is to augment patient and clinician reporting of clinically relevant phenomena with neural measures for prediction, prognosis, and detection of pain.

How much time do you put into this work?
The program is a unique cohort-based research experience where 
we work full-time (40 hours a week) during the summer and work 
the following two semesters (15 hours a week) where we get 
research credit.
 
What academic background did you have before you started?
I have an academic background in Biology, Chemistry, and Python coding. 

How did you learn what you needed to know to be successful in this project?
I have found that taking initiative to discover more about my interests has been essential in helping me succeed. 

What was the hardest part about your research? 
The hardest part about my research is when we have technical issues that need to be debugged which is difficult, virtually.  

What was the most unexpected thing?
One of the most unexpected things is how open-ended research is and how much say students have in the direction we take for the project. 

How does this research experience relate to your work in other classes?
My computer science and biology classes have been very helpful. The computer science class helped with giving me a foundation in python for this project. My biology classes have given me a more real-world application perspective to the project. 

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?  
Even if you do not think you are the most qualified applicant, sometimes putting yourself out there and trying can make all the difference. 

What are your career goals?
My career goals are to go to medical school once I have graduated 
from UMBC.

Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP) – a recruitment and referral program that connects federal and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated college students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workplace through summer or permanent jobs.

To be eligible for the WRP, candidates must be current, full-time undergraduate or graduate students with a disability, or have graduated within *one year of the release of the database each December. Candidates must be U.S. citizens.

*Since it may take time to fully assess the impact of COVID-19 on WRP hiring, WRP will provide recent graduates with disabilities an additional year of eligibility to participate in this fall’s application period and the 2021 database.  This means that all recent graduates that applied to WRP in fall 2019 are eligible to apply again this fall.  Recent graduates who graduated on or after April 1, 2018 will be eligible to apply this fall, along with current degree-seeking students with disabilities. 

 All candidates, whether they applied last year or not, must complete a new application this fall on the WRP website so that WRP can ensure that employers have access to an up-to-date resume, transcript, and application for every applicant.  

Applications for students from participating WRP schools will open on August 24, 2020 and close October 14, 2020. It is required that all candidates complete their application and upload required documents by October 16, 2020.

WRP has switched to an informational interview process for candidates. The interview period this year will take place from October 26-November 18, 2020. All interviews will be conducted remotely, in most cases by phone.
