This full-day conference will focus on the unique needs of international students in their internship and job search process in the United States. Topics will include H-1B and permanent resident statuses, negotiating for these statuses with potential employers, advice on getting the most out of your job search, and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from experts, alumni, students, and employers to make sure they are fully prepared to meet their career goals in the United States.

Renewable scholarships for chemistry-related disciplines
The ACS Scholars Program is more than just a scholarship, it’s a network of passionate chemical professionals who want to help and support future chemists during a crucial time in their lives.
The ACS Scholars Program is a community that is dedicated in supporting underrepresented minority students from high school seniors to undergraduate students who want to enter fields in the chemical sciences. Scholars are selected based on academic standing, financial need, career objective, leadership skills, and involvement in school activities and community service.
Encourage your students to apply for an opportunity to be among the:
- 300 + Scholar Alumni who have completed a Ph.D. program. Of those, more than 45 have joined university faculty.
- More than 50% of ACS Scholar Alumni chose to pursue advanced degrees, and half of those have completed or in progress towards a doctoral degree.
- 90% of ACS Scholars earn baccalaureate degrees with 80% in the chemical sciences.

2020 Summer Research Programs in NYC
The deadline to apply for the 2020 undergraduate summer research programs is February 2. These 10-week programs begin on June 1 and end on August 7, 2020.

These five programs include:
These programs are open to current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who may be interested in pursuing research at the interface of biomedicine, chemistry, computational biology, and engineering for a summer research experience.
This is a great opportunity for students to learn new skills, to increase their scientific knowledge, and to engage in exciting experiences while exploring their career interests.
Participants will:
- Interact with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students
- Attend a weekly luncheon seminar series of presentation by faculty
- Attend a weekly luncheon seminar series of presentations by faculty
- Attend a professional development workshops
- Receive a stipend of $6,000 for the summer, with housing available

Volunteer at Saint Agnes Hospital in Spring 2020

Interested in volunteering in a hospital environment? Want to be part of a supportive team?
Saint Agnes Hospital is looking for volunteers this spring. Meet with their Volunteer Coordinator to hear about the supporting role you could play, and learn about volunteer opportunities.
PLEASE NOTE: Volunteering with Saint Agnes Hospital is a 60-hour commitment for the semester. Please review your academic schedule to make sure you have a plan to meet this requirement. Hours must be completed within the semester you volunteer. There will be no flexibility in this requirement.
All screenings must be completed quickly and volunteers should be ready to start no later than the first or second week of February 2020!
Your Check List:
- Stop by the Shriver Center to pick up a Saint Agnes Volunteer Application and return the completed application to the Shriver Center (along with your letter of recommendation). The Shriver Center will forward the application to the Volunteer Coordinator at SAH. Only complete applications will be forwarded (with the exception of the Physician Release Form).
- Contact Michelle Slafkosky at: mslafkos@ascension.org to confirm receipt of your application and to schedule an interview/initial meeting.
- Once you are all set to volunteer, contact the Shriver Center for enrollment in the 096 Practicum for the spring semester. If upper-level elective credits are needed, we can also enroll you in SOCY 396 (learn more during your 096 practicum meeting).

UMBC’s 24th Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day will be held on April 22, 2020. Apply to present your research or creative work by February 14, 2020.
All current undergraduates who have conducted research, scholarship or creative work in the last year may apply to present their results at URCAD. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits and performances, and film. Mentors, fellow students, friends, family members, high school teachers and students, graduate school recruiters, and the general public are invited to attend.
Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated with other programs.
Students who have received Undergraduate Research Awards for the previous year will present their findings. The UMBC Review, UMBC’s annual peer-reviewed research journal, which features academic papers written by UMBC undergraduates, makes its debut at this event- stop by and get your copy! Come hear the alumni keynote speaker talk about their experiences after UMBC, and how being an undergraduate researcher benefited them.
UMBC is unique in providing this opportunity for undergraduate students to conduct and present their research in a professional and supportive setting. Students get valuable feedback from their peers, faculty, and staff, and practice their public speaking and presentation skills. This campus-wide celebration of achievement affirms UMBC’s commitment to the twin goals of research and a distinctive undergraduate experience.

Over 250 Undergraduate Presenters in All Disciplines Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement Day (URCAD) features research, scholarship, and creative work carried out by UMBC undergraduates. Student work is shared through oral presentations, posters, artistic exhibits and performances, and film.
Over 250 presenters participate annually. Researchers work with faculty mentors on independent research, or research that is part of the mentor’s on-going projects. They are from all disciplines, and can be working on a thesis, capstone project, part of a scholars or honors program, or they can be unaffiliated with other programs.
Students who have received Undergraduate Research Awards (URA) for the previous year will be presenting their findings. Established in January 1996 by Sadie B. Feldman in memory of her family, this award is given to a UMBC student (junior or senior) who has demonstrated, through community service and academic activities, an understanding of the responsibilities of citizenship.

Established in April 1995 by Samuel I. Rosenberg, this award is given to a UMBC student (any year) who has completed a public service-focused internship, with either a nonprofit or government organization, directly addressing a social challenge.

The iCURE Program (National Cancer Institute - NIH)
Applications for iCURE must be submitted by January 17, 2020
The Intramural Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (iCURE) program is now accepting applications for fall 2020 research experiences!
Applications for iCURE must be submitted by January 17, 2020 for research experiences that will begin in September 2020.

iCURE provides mentored research experiences for qualified students and scientists on the NCI campuses in Bethesda, Rockville and Frederick, Maryland.
The program offers:
- One-year awards to post-baccalaureate individuals (PIs may have the option to provide additional support for a second year)
- Two-year awards to graduate students
- Three-year awards to postdoctoral fellows
- Professional development and career support

iCURE particularly encourages the participation of individuals from underrepresented populations and aims to further NCI’s interest in diversity. An iCURE scholar must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or legal permanent resident of the United States.
Applicants should visit the iCURE website for information about eligibility and application instructions.
iCURE is a partnership between the NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) and the NCI Intramural Research Program (IRP), which includes the Center for Cancer Research (CCR) and the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG).
iCURE is an extension of the highly successful Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (CURE) program, which helps support the career progress of its scholars toward research independence and fosters and sustains diversity in the biomedical researcher pipeline.

The GGJ is the largest game jam event with 850 physical locations in 113 countries. In 2019 it had over 47,000 participants, who made 9,010 games together in 48 hours.
Registration for the 2020 Global Game Jam is open!
For the 12th(!) year in a row, UMBC is the Baltimore host site for the Global Game Jam! It will run from 5:00 pm Friday, January 31st to 5:00 pm Sunday, February 2nd, just after classes start. Space is limited, so sign up now!
For anyone who hasn’t participated, the global game jam is a 48-hour game development event, similar in spirit to a hackathon, with hundreds of host sites around the world. At 5:00 pm local time, introduce the jam and announce this year’s theme. Previous year’s themes have ranged from a phrase (“as long as we’re together there will always be problems”) to a word (“extinction”) to an image (ouroboros: a snake eating its tail), to a sound (the recording of a heartbeat). Participants brainstorm game ideas around the theme, form into teams, and spend the weekend building games that are designed to be both fun and express the theme.
The UMBC site is not restricted to just students. In previous years, we have had a mix of UMBC students, alumni, students from other schools, game development professionals, and just people with an interest in game development. The UMBC site is limited to just 40 participants, so sign up early if you want to come. If you are not near UMBC, check the main Global Game Jam site for a participating location near you.
